Reds Tidbits (2006 Season)

.....................Freel

Griffey ..................................Kearns

............Lopez.............. Phillips

Encarnacion .............................Dunn

.................Valentin/LaRue

I think someone already suggested it, but this looks pretty damn good to me for an everyday lineup. Get rid of Hatteberg, use Aurilia to spell 1st, SS, and 3rd and Womack to spell 2nd, and all OF's.

Phillips now has 13 RBI in 29 AB's, good for second on the team behind Dunn. :yow1:

If we could get six innings of 4 run ball out of our starter every game, we could win 100 games. :p

I like that lineup too.

But 4 runs in 6 innings will only happen half the time and then you have the bullpen which is probably the worst part of this team. That means they would have to go 3 innings a game. Eventually they will get worn down.

I would mind seeing Belisle get that 5th starter. He has his times, but I think he has proven more than Dave freakin' Williams.

MILWAUKEE — Brandon Phillips hit his first grand slam and added another shot for his first two-homer game to help the Cincinnati Reds beat the Milwaukee Brewers 12-8 last night.
Trailing 6-2, the Reds scored 10 straight runs to make it 12-6, including five in the sixth inning when Phillips hit his two-out grand slam off reliever Mike Adams.
Edwin Encarnacion hit a two-run homer in the fifth off Brewers reliever Justin Lehr (1-1), who had just entered for starter Tomo Ohka, to give the Reds a 7-6 lead, Cincinnati’s first advantage since it was 2-0 in the second.
Phillips and Encarnacion, the seventh and eighth hitters, combined to go 4 for 8 with nine RBI and five runs.
Milwaukee scored two runs in the eighth to make it 12-8. Chad Moeller hit a homer off Matt Belisle (1-0) and Carlos Lee drove in his 16 th run of the season with an RBI single. With the bases loaded, reliever Todd Coffey struck out Rickie Weeks and Prince Fielder to end the threat.
The Brewers scored three in the second and third to take a 6-2 lead. In between, Reds manager Jerry Narron was thrown out for arguing a call in the third.
Narron was tossed by crew chief Charlie Reliford when Fielder seemed to be pulled off the bag by Weeks’ throw on Scott Hatteberg’s grounder. Replays appeared to show Fielder came off the bag as the throw arrived.
Bill Hall led the bottom of the third with a homer to left. Later, Ohka, who was 1 for 18 against the Reds in his career, hit an RBI single through a drawn-in infield and Brady Clark added his second sacrifice fly to make it 6-2.
Phillips’ two-run homer to center came in the fourth to cut Milwaukee’s lead to 6-4, and Ohka gave up an unearned run later in the inning when his bad throw of a chopper pulled Fielder off the bag and allowed Felipe Lopez to score to make it 6-5.
Cincinnati starter Dave Williams lasted three innings, giving up six runs and eight hits.
Ohka also gave up six runs and eight hits in four innings.
Short hops
The Reds scored three runs without an RBI — two on Milwaukee errors and one on a double play. . . . Brewers manager Ned Yost discounts Lee’s hot start (eight home runs in 16 games) has anything to do with his upcoming free agency. Yost says Lee is more comfortable and selective at the plate. . . . The game was the first this season in Miller Park with the 12,000-ton retractable roof open. . . . Reds center fielder Ryan Freel extended his hitting streak to seven games. . . . The Reds recalled left-handed pitcher Brian Shackelford from triple-A Louisville. Shackelford was 1-0 with one save and a 1.29 ERA in seven relief appearances for Louisville. He fills the spot of left-handed pitcher Michael Gosling, who was sent back to Louisville after being called up Wednesday. . . . Outfielder Ken Griffey Jr. did not travel with the Reds. He is on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained right biceps tendon in his right knee.

Problem facing the Reds FO as I see it.

-12 Pitching spots

-Harang, Claussen, Arroyo, Milton(barely), Weathers, Mercker, Coffey(jury still out). Your only true ML caliber players who could go pitch for pretty much anyone else in MLB.

-That leaves you 5 guys, who have to be used, who are fringe ML pitchers at best and AAA players in over their heads at worst.

-What can you do to fix it? Help on the way from the minors? Nope. Trade some prospects? Nope, what few we have are all down in the low minors, too far away from the majors to fetch much in a trade.

-What we do have to trade without crippiling the team we have: a catcher(Valentin, LaRue) or one of the 2B (Phillips, Aurilia, Womack).

- If Kriv can turn that meager little bit into 5 average ML pitchers he is a God among mortals.

I don't mind Shackelford and Belisle. They will have thier bad outings, but both pictched well last nite and I have confidence in them. I also think that Chris Hammond COULD come around, b/c he has been solid thorugh his career and just started off the season in horrible fashion.

We also have Wagner in AAA who is a servicable guy.

So if we could pick up a good relief guy for one of the above mentioned guys and hope that the other guys that I mentioned above can fill the other four spots we might be ok. It really depends on how our starters hold up tho.

Wait a minute.

How can a team be 10th in BA and 1st in Runs?

It just doesn't make sense.

Are you actually putting forth cold hard data that shows BA to be a somewhat less than useful indicator of offensive prowess?

Blasphemy, I say.

It's this simple: Freel AND Phillips need to be in the lineup everyday.

Phillips on 2nd, 2 out... Freel hits a bouncer to the left side. His speed makes it a base hit, and Phillips scores from 2nd on the infield base hit. I don't see any way you can keep these guys out of the lineup.

The Reds playing small ball when they have to and beating Sheets when he's on his game is a VERY good sign.

Guaranteed no worse than a split in this series, things are going well so far.

Very important game IMO. Arroyo gives up a lead off homer, the proceeds to pitch a whale of a game. Phillips cannot come out of the lineup, he's too valuable right now. He seems to give the team whatever boost it needs to get over the hump, at bat, basepaths, whatever.
