Reds Tidbits (2006 Season)

If we keep relying on the long ball we are going to go through a couple of long losing streaks this season. Besides the bullpen the one thing I think this team is missing is clutch hitting.

Like Kearns 3 run 2 out homer in the 8th?

The long losing streaks will be due to a team ERA above 5.00 more so than an offense that leads the NL in runs scored all year.

CHICAGO — A little wind blowing out didn’t bother Eric Milton. Nor did the Chicago Cubs, for that matter.
Adam Dunn hit a solo homer, and Felipe Lopez and Austin Kearns added three-run shots to lead the Cincinnati Reds to an 8-3 victory over the Cubs yesterday.
Dunn homered in the first, Lopez went deep in the third and Kearns hit one out in the eighth.
Milton (2-0) allowed three runs (two earned) in 6 2/3 innings in his second solid outing of the season. He left after retiring pinch-hitter Todd Walker and Juan Pierre to start the seventh. Todd Coffey relieved him and struck out Jerry Hairston Jr.
Milton also tripled with one out in the fifth and scored his second run of the game on an errant pickoff throw by Carlos Zambrano that increased the Reds’ lead to 5-1.
The way Milton was pitching early on, Chicago couldn’t afford miscues.
Matt Murton hit the first pitch of the fourth over the center-field wall for his second home run, and the Cubs scored two more in the fifth on Murton’s bases-loaded single and Dunn’s error in left.
Otherwise, Milton kept them in check.
"Guys came in before the game and said the wind is blowing out, but you can’t really think about it," Milton said. "There were some deep fly balls, but fortunately, only one got out. I’ll take that."
The Cubs weren’t as fortunate.
Zambrano (0-1) allowed five runs (four earned) on four hits, walked three, hit a batter and struck out eight.
Dunn went deep with two outs in the first, sending a 1-and-0 pitch to the left-field bleachers for his fifth home run of the season and third of the series.
Zambrano walked David Ross leading off the third and — after Milton bunted into a forceout — hit Ryan Freel. Lopez then made it 4-0 with his third homer.
"His command was a little off," Lopez said. "I was just concentrating on getting a good pitch to hit. . . . I was trying to hit the ball hard in the gaps."
With the bases loaded and two outs in the fifth, Murton singled to left to drive in Henry Blanco and Dunn bobbled the ball, allowing Zambrano to score from second to make it 5-3.
Kearns made it 8-3 in the eighth when he hit Bob Howry’s first pitch over the right-field wall for his third homer of the season. The Reds kept Ken Griffey Jr. out of the lineup as a precaution after he left Wednesday’s game with stiffness in the back of his right knee.

A new year, a new start for two Reds

Lopez, Kearns show signs of feeling secure in lineup

BY JOHN FAY | ENQUIRER STAFF WRITER

<!--ARTICLE BODY TEXT-->CHICAGO - At this point last season, Felipe Lopez was fighting to get in the lineup and Austin Kearns was fighting to stay in it.
This season, both are secure with their place in the Reds' plans, and their numbers show it.
Lopez and Kearns each hit three-run home runs to help the Reds to an 8-3 win over the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field.
With both off to good starts, the Reds are very dangerous.
"With (Adam) Dunn and (Ken) Griffey, you know what you're going to get day to day," Reds manager Jerry Narron said. "We need someone to be able to help pick us up, and they've been able to do that."
On April 14 of last year, Kearns was hitting .231 with one home run and three RBI. This year, he's hitting .297 with three home runs and seven RBI.
On April 14 of last year, Lopez was hitting .400 in 10 at-bats with no home runs and no RBI. This year, he's hitting .324 with three home runs and seven RBI.
"Everybody knows Kearns is a good hitter and Lopie is a good hitter," Narron said. "I'm not surprised."
Lopez's home run Thursday came in the third with the Reds up 1-0. Carlos Zambrano started him with three straight balls.
"With Dunn behind me, I knew I'd get a pitch to hit," Lopez said. "I took one (strike). Then I tried to hit it hard."
It went out to left-center.
Kearns' homer - an opposite-field shot - came in the eighth when the lead was down to 5-3.
"I just want to be up in that situation," he said. "You always want to hit with guys on base. You look for a pitch and try not to miss it."
But he admits that last year, more would have been on his mind than getting a pitch to hit. He would have been wondering if he would be in the lineup the next day. He and Wily Mo Peña were sharing right field.
"Last year, Wily was playing a lot. He was hot from the get-go," Kearns said. "I think it's a different mind-set when you know you're going to be out there. My first two at-bats weren't all that great. This year, I'm not sitting there worrying about if I don't do something here I might not be in there tomorrow. It's easier on the mind-set."

I'm pretty sure it's not like San Diego, for example...they have too many mashers themselves to design a park that way. Time will tell if it's like Cincinnati's park, or more intermediate.

At least they didnt go with all the nooks and crannies like some new parks do. Unless you want to elevate the wall I find it stupid, like Houston you can't tell if the ball goes out some times b/c there is a yellow line on the brick, and then they have that stupid ass hill in ceterfield.

Yeah, I think Houston is the worst park ever. Bad Mojo with the former Enron name too.

The Reds will never win a game this year when they score only 1 run. They're just not built that way. They'll be 0 for whatever in 1-0 games. Tomorrow's another day, hopefully Jr. isn't hurt bad. I love baseball.

:wink2: The reds are officially 1-0 in 1-0 games. Great showing tonight by the reds pitchers, but I must admit I was a little nervous when weathers walked Spiezio

So you think this team is a good clutch hitting team?

I think this team is one of the 2-3 best offensive teams in all of baseball. Unlike a lot of people I don't have any particular fetish for a certain style of play, I simply go by runs scored when determing if an offense is good or not.

As far as clutch goes read this thread and tell me if you still want to have this discussion.

I agree with the guy named Steel SD

Anyway, back to the game. Never thought I'd live long enough to see the Reds win a 1-0 pitchers duel or see Harang out do last years NL Cy Young award winner.

I still think the pitchers are playing WAAAYYY over their heads right now and are due to come back to earth hard but I sure as shit am enjoying it while it lasts.
