Knight Commission bashes football 'recruitniks'

By BOB DART
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published on: 01/23/07 Washington ? College football recruitniks need to get a life.
That warning came from witnesses Monday before the Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics who claimed that external pressures are warping the recruiting process, damaging the psyches of 17-year-old high school athletes and corrupting parents and coaches.
Web sites such as Rivals.com and Scout.com have become gospel for millions of fans who follow recruiting nearly as fervently as they follow the actual college football season, witnesses told the commission.

Welcome to the instant information age. AKA "The Internet". I hope its not to detrimental to the recruiting process as a whole, but I think there's been some "tainting" going on for a while. Yes, there are lots of football surfers who feed on the info posted by Rivals, and Scout.

Knight Commission to Fight High Salaries and Recruiting Pressures

Commissioners say NCAA may seek an antitrust exemption to control pay
By BRAD WOLVERTON and SARA LIPKA

A video of a 6-year-old boy playing basketball has attracted more than 100,000 page views on a popular Internet site. Two college football coaches considered among the game's best recruiters are known cheaters. Another coach, unaware that members of the notorious Crips gang had infiltrated his locker room, tried to recruit a member of the rival Bloods onto his team.

Those were a few of the eyebrow-raising stories and allegations that surfaced here last week during a lively meeting of the Knight Foundation Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics. Commissioners organized the meeting to tackle recruiting problems and gender inequities in college sports, but another topic ? the high pay of football and men's basketball coaches ? came up repeatedly.

My rap knowledge isn't super extensive, but I think snoop is a crip, thus that crazy crip walk he's always doing. That has to be referring to USC doesn't it?

Either way, I think I'd stop recruiting a dude in a gang no matter what affilitation.

Maybe the Knight Commission could actually help bring about some meaningful reform if it weren't voiced by people like the faculty member cited in the article from The Chronicle. Eliminate competition on weekdays? That's insane. There's no way that genie's going back in the bottle. Something good and meaningful might happen if objecting faculty decided to work with Athletics to make change rather than wishing to exert control.

As for the section of the article on recruiting, I agree with it. Recruits are being sold and consumed like commodities, and are being dehumanized. It even happens here. This site doesn't participate in it, but people who participate in this site contribute to it sometimes by the way they demand and consume the information. Just read some of the posts in the this forum sometime, and imagine it's your son or daughter that's being discussed in that way. Some of it is appalling.
