The Football Writers Association of America included three Ohio State Buckeyes in its Freshman All-American Team.

Redshirt running back Mike Weber, true freshman Michael Jordan, and redshirt freshman defensive lineman Dre'Mont Jones all earned honors for their contributions to the Ohio State 2016 season

In the first meeting between Mike Weber and Kevin Wilson, Ohio State’s new offensive coordinator dropped a name that quickly captured the attention of the Buckeyes’ running back.

Adrian Peterson.

“That was the first thing he said to me when I met him,” Weber said Sunday.

If Wilson was trying to get Weber to buy in, name-dropping a player like Peterson is a pretty good way to start things off.

Wilson was the Sooners’ offensive coordinator while Peterson was in Norman and under his direction, Peterson emerged as one of college football’s most dominant running backs in the modern era. Oklahoma’s offenses set all kinds of records, as well.

As Ohio State’s running back, that’s something Weber said he is definitely looking forward to.

“He knows I got the ball a little bit less than maybe I was supposed to and he likes to run the ball,” Weber said. “We’ll just go from there.”

That's a bold name to drop. As Wilson can also say Demarco Murray, Tevin Coleman and Jordan Howard and still say a lot! Weber could easily be added to that list if he just works on securing the a little better, pass blocking and consistently catching the ball. Weber has a very bright future after a great start last year

Let alone Campbell, Brown, Wilson, and all of the other guys that can make plays that were not given the opportunity very often. 30 damn QB runs a game. 3rd and 9 QB draw or freakin speed option. So glad they are gone.

Rookie Jitters Out of the Way, Mike Weber Maturing Into a Leader

Mike Weber’s first year at Ohio State was turbulent, to say the least. The former four-star running back hails from Detroit, Michigan, in the heart of Wolverine country. Before he was the Buckeyes’ next big running back, he was Michigan’s.

Weber decommitted from Michigan and then committed to OSU in 2015. An unforgivable sin, the news wasn’t taken kindly by Wolverine fans. They scurried to the internet and message boards, calling Weber a traitor and wished animosity on his future. Eventually, he looked to make Ohio State his home and his future, but conflicting situations arose.

Three days after he signed his Letter of Intent with Ohio State, running back coach Stan Drayton took a job with the Chicago Bears. This left Weber feeling betrayed and upset because Drayton was one of the predominant coaches who persuaded him to leave his home state and come to Columbus.

Rumors and speculation swirled around Weber as many thought he would transfer, while others were concerned this situation would turn virulent for the program. Two years later, those concerns have been put to rest as Weber has grown as a player and a person.

“He’s growing up. I’ve said that all along, and every time there’s a little bit more of a growth process going on,” running backs coach Tony Alford said. “He’s a real dude. He’s fun to work with. He’s a much better ‘pro’ now than he was before as far as how he is handling his business. His approach to the game, his approach to how he takes care of his body, his approach to the younger players in our room as far as trying to help them, it’s all changed. Some guys are like that immediately, and some guys it takes a little longer. It’s a maturation process. Me, I’m the type of guy that I want it right now. If I don’t get it right now I get tensed up, but he’s coming along really well.”

MIKE WEBER'S 2016 SEASON REVIEWED AND 2017 OUTLOOK

After a strong showing in 2016, expectations for Ohio State redshirt sophomore running back Mike Weber are high heading into the fall. Where does his first year rank all-time, and can the success continue?

In case you didn’t know, let’s remind everyone of one thing: redshirt sophomore running back Mike Weber is very good.

The Detroit native rushed for 1,096 yards on 182 carries in 2016, averaging six yards per carry and 84 yards per game while finding the end zone nine times in 13 games. Compared to other Ohio State rushers historically, however, Weber’s 2016 campaign does not rank near the top in terms of yards, as he sits 29th all-time.

With that in mind, Weber’s 182 rushing attempts last season were the 12th fewest for a 1,000 yard rusher all-time in program history. The only player to rush for more yards in fewer attempts was Robert Smith in 1990, who rushed for 1,126 yards on 177 attempts.

Additionally, Weber averaged six yards per carry in 2016, which is 11th all-time for 1,000 yard rushers in program history. To put that into perspective, that is more than Eddie George’s Heisman season in 1995 and Archie Griffin’s 1975 Heisman campaign.

Weber’s stats may not jump off the page when you look at last year — his first real season in the backfield for the Buckeyes — but if they are compared to Scarlet and Gray running backs in the past, he has be excellent for Ohio State and defines what he likes to call “crispy”.

Buckeyes Need Mike Weber to be Premier Back per Urban Meyer

Hyde would then blow that theory out of the water in 2013, rushing for 1,521 yards while missing the first three games of the season.

That started three consecutive years of Meyer and the Buckeyes having a premier running back carrying the load. In 2014 and 2015, Ezekiel Elliott followed Hyde’s lead and upped the ante with over 3,600 yards rushing in his two seasons as a starter. Elliott was the very definition of premier.

Last season, it was redshirt freshman Mike Weber who had the unenviable task of trying to live up to the expectations built by Hyde and Elliott. He was good, rushing for 1,096 yards, but he wasn’t elite.

He has grown a lot since the last time he took the field, however, and not just on the field.

“Last year he was an immature guy,” Meyer said. “Never a bad guy, always a good young man. But his grades took off. He earned good enough grades to move off campus. He’s really doing nice things. It’s the typical maturity you have from a third-year player.”
