RB Maurice Clarett (B1G Freshman of the Year, National Champion)

reaction from Coach Tressel

BN (free)

Tressel responded to the report naming Clarett.

“As I was riding over here, (sports information director) Steve Snapp said there was report,” Tressel said. “My reaction to that is it’s sad. I said the last few times I had been asked about Maurice that it was my hope that he would have an opportunity to go over to NFL Europe and make a comeback and get a chance to play the game he loves.

“I hope it’s not true. But beyond that I don’t know much. It’s sad.”

Tressel revealed that he and Clarett had recently resumed their relationship with the player reaching out to his former coach to smooth things over.

“I have talked with Maurice three or four times in the last six or eight weeks,” Tressel said. “It has been along the lines of hoping he would have a chance to get things together and make a run at NFL Europe. NFL Europe is for folks with some ability to get an opportunity.”

Tressel was asked if he was troubled by the allegations.

“It is real troubling, not just with youngsters when it becomes newsworthy, but any time kids don’t go the direction you hope,” the coach said.

What a sad waste....

They guy could have had the world on his plate and he blew it. I wonder how long it will take him to realize how many opportunities that he has squandered? Every time he does one of these self destructive things any reflected blame on tOSU will be lessened. But seeing this guys sports/non-sports life play out it makes me appreciate even more those players who may not have world class talent but give everything they have on the field, and when they are good people off the field too that makes it even better. My parting shot though is; at least Ryan Leaf was not a felon!

If true, this is a sad day for Buckeyes everywhere. Especially for Clarett, no
matter how far he has strayed down the wrong path.

The magnitude of squandering such immense potential is trully biblical in scale.
But the tragedy of this incident in human terms would be even greater. For Maurice's sake I hope these charges are are a mistake.

Solid post, BB73.

We should stop jumping to conclusions. I'm confident this was all just a misunderstanding. MoC just wanted to borrow their cellphone (yeah, that's right, it's always about the cellphone and the SUV). After all, since Troy's mom stopped paying his phone bills, and since he's been out of work lately, he probably doesn't have one of his own.:wink2:

Well this news put a real damper on my 1st day of this New Years.

At this point I am going to adopt the following pose when it comes to MoC - the arrest, EsPIn inevitably trotting out of this report, and any other obnoxious events surrounding Clarett, at completely inappropriate times.

After the Fiesta Bowl is done and ND has gone down to the Buckeyes - then I'll open my ears to this story. Not till then though.

This from Fox Sports:

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Former Ohio State University running back Maurice Clarett was accused of using a gun to rob two people in an alley behind a bar early Sunday, police said.

Clarett, 22, who helped the Buckeyes win the national championship in 2002, fled when the bar owner or manager, who knew Clarett and the victims, came into the alley and identified him shortly before 2 a.m.

According to police, Clarett left the scene in a white sport utility vehicle with two other men and got only a cell phone from his alleged victims, who weren't injured. He was wanted on two counts of suspicion of aggravated robbery.
Clarett sat out the 2003 season after he was charged with misdemeanor falsification for filing a police report claiming that more than $10,000 in clothing, CDs, cash and stereo equipment was stolen from a car he borrowed from a local dealership. He later pleaded guilty to a lesser charge.
Ohio State suspended Clarett for misleading investigators, and for receiving special benefits worth thousands of dollars from a family friend. He later began an unsuccessful legal fight that went to the U.S. Supreme Court to be allowed in the NFL early. Clarett was chosen by the Denver Broncos in last year's draft, but the team cut him in August.
