Don't you folks remember your high school physics? Suction (just like centrifugal force) does not exist.

but a vaccuum created by the 'non-existant suction' exists...

Suction implies a negative force, which doesn't exist. The liquid is actually pushed up the tube by a pressure differential created when you 'suck' on it. It's a term of convenience, not an actual force. Same with centrifugal force. there is no force directed outward. it's merely inertia caused by the two forces of circular motion, namely inward (centripetal) and tangential.

Vaccuum, on the other hand, is merely the absence of air, hence the absence of air pressure.

Nah... here's how it works. I'm dumber than your average stump. Only thing dumber is my stupid cat. I just memorized two geeky factoids back in the day, so when i need to be seen as smart, i just whip one of 'em out.


The other has to do with shooting cats. I'll hold on to it for a rainy day, I think :)

ah... but the vaccuum, which is caused by the 'sucking' is what causes the disparity in pressure, and the resultant upward movement of the liquid...

Yes. One way of looking at it is to say that the liquid is sucked up the straw by vaccuum. It's wrong, but you're welcome to use it. I'm sorry I sold back my physics book, or I'd quote you. Let me attempt to re-phrase. In physics, there are no 'negative' forces. In other words, everything is a push, not a pull. For example. How does a straw work? You suck on it. The actual effect is a slight inhalation (regardless of how hard you're working), increasing the volume of your lungs/trachea/mouth (again, slightly), causing a net decrease in pressure at the top of the straw. With me so far? This generates a pressure gradient along the length of the straw. Matter, left to its own devices, will move down a gradient (whether it be concentration, density, or in this case, pressure). Liquid is pushed up the straw by the pressure differential (excess pressure at the bottom).

If you want to test this theory, stand in traffic. When a city bus hits you, the immense pressure on one side of your body will cause bits of you (most of you, really) to be swiftly propelled in the direction opposite the vehicle's impact (down the pressure gradient). Granted, this example is really a concussive event, and not the best correlation to fluid dynamics, but it IS impressive, I assure you :)


Your perception of the world is your own affair, and none of mine. I'm just spouting the definitions we were taught in physics, which I hate to admit was a pretty fun class.
