RB Jaamal Berry (Transfer to Murray State)

South Florida loaded with RB talent
BY LARRY BLUSTEIN
Special to The Miami Herald

As the combine season comes to an end, giving way to spring football and then to the very popular summer camps and 7-on-7 leagues/tournaments, many new stars have popped up since the end of the 2007 season.

One of the players who has made the most of the recent combine season is Palmetto running back Jaamal Berry. When the 2007 season finished, Berry (5-11, 185) was considered a top-flight talent who was just coming into his own on the football field.

Having watched him several times this past year, Berry is a tremendous prospect, who made the most of a very aggressive combine season that saw him clock a 4.41 (40) and excel in a 7-on-7 tournament at the University of South Florida.

His running style is explosive; he is quick to hit the holes and knows how to find daylight. There is a reason why schools such as Clemson, West Virginia, Florida, South Carolina, FSU, Ohio St., LSU, Michigan, Mississippi and Minnesota will continue to follow his every move.

If Berry is to become the No. 1 running back prospect in the state, he will have to first prove that he is the top back in his own county.

Another highlight video:

He is really impressive. Crazy how quick he can jump sideways and then accelerate past somebody. Plus, he looks to enjoy lowering his shoulder and trying to run guys over. Running style and build actually kind of reminds me of Kenny Irons (former Auburn RB and 2nd round draft pick of the Bengals in 2007).

Impressive to say the least. Great power/speed/quickness combo. Looks like he can catch the ball out of the backfield as well. Irons is a pretty good comparison, although Berry looks to be shiftier. Would like to see a little more patience, but that will be something he can work on here.

Are Cierre Wood and Bryce Brown clearly a cut ahead of Berry? His film is so impressive and he plays in a football hotbed. I haven't seen much film of the other two, but it seems like they're the consensus top two backs.

how do Jamaal's size/measureables/running style/ level off competition compare to mo wells after Junior Year?

His size/measureables seem pretty similar on the surface?

Rivals had Mo at 5-9 177 4.44 (all event-confirmed stats). Jaamal is a bit taller and said to be filling out but I think right now he's about 185. He was timed at the Miami combine at 4.31 so I think he is faster than Wells was, which says something. Not an expert on film, IMO both show great elusiveness in high school but Jaamal seems to a have a little more fondness for contact, which again speaks volumes because Mo was not shy. Miami Palmetto, Berry's HS and Sandalwood, Mo's HS are both class 6A, which is Florida's highest division. Both obviously played tough competition but Mo was in Jacksonville and Berry Miami, so there may be some difference.

Jax is pretty good for 1A football prospects but nowhere near the level they have down in Miami. Kind of like the difference between Dayton and Cleveland imo.
