RB J.K. "All Day" Dobbins (2017 B1G CG MVP, 2019 1st Team All-American, Los Angeles Chargers)

Don’t discount JK Dobbins’ importance to the Baltimore Ravens offense. The former Ohio State star shined as a rookie in 2020.

But, despite a nice stat line in his first year as a pro, it doesn't look like Dobbins is getting the respect he deserves. NFL Network’s Cynthia Frelund jumped on the Dobbins bandwagon and wondered where the respect is for the valuable offensive weapon.

When pointing to his intangibles, Frelund noted that Dobbins is well ahead of the rest of the pack among running backs.

"He averaged 7 yards per rush on outside runs. The next closest guy had 6 yards. That's ridiculous," Frelund said, via the Baltimore Ravens website. "He had seven touchdowns against stacked boxes. That was the fourth-most in the NFL and everybody knew the Ravens were going to run, so that's a masterful feat there.

"In pass [protection] he not only made contact but held his defender for at least one second at the 10th-highest rate in the NFL. For a running back, that's one that's unsung; you don't count that enough."

J.K. DOBBINS, RB, BALTIMORE RAVENS

Dobbins will continue to battle alongside Gus Edwards for the majority of the carries, but it’s clear that Dobbins is the go-to back to start with. If you take quarterback Lamar Jackson out of the stats, Dobbins was the leading rusher for Baltimore in 2020, going for 805 yards and nine touchdowns on 134 carries. It was a rather impressive season for the second-round pick and is likely to be the norm, considering the path that young running backs in the NFL go on.

It’s something we don’t see often in college, although technically it’s more prevalent in the college ranks. In total, 27 college running backs have made the 2,000-yard club. It is both awe inspiring, because all those players managed to do so in fewer games, and realistic, because there’s a much larger volume of teams and backs in college football. Of course, we have to account for the fact there are some truly sieve-like defenses that allow for prolific rushers that we don’t see in the NFL.

All that said, there’s been but one running back to meet the mark in Ohio State program history. Yes, the crown jewel of Ohio State rushing records in recent years has to go to JK Dobbins, who managed to get to a 2,000-yard season in 2019 against some of the most challenging defenses in college football.

It’s impressive enough to have a 1,000-yard rushing season, fragmented as the running back position can be among different backs in a given program. JK Dobbins had three. And throw in his pièce de résistance, a 2,003-yard season in 2019, for good measure.

Just sayin': Even with playing 12, 13 or 14 games a 2,000 yard season isn't all that easy.
