RB J.K. "All Day" Dobbins (2017 B1G CG MVP, 2019 1st Team All-American, Los Angeles Chargers)

Gotta say that I'm happy that things didn't work out with Akers. This kid wants to be a Buckeye and stuck with it through his rehab. Was an absolute freak at The Opening and I'm going to guess that he's going to be really good here.
If he's healed up ... he's probably playing this fall...

2017 Recruiting Snapshot: J.K. Dobbins

JK%20Zeke.jpg

The Player

J.K. Dobbins is a 5-foot-9 200-pound tailback from La Grange, Texas, and is rated the No. 2 all-purpose back in the nation per 247Sports and No. 4 running back per Rivals. He missed all of 2016 with an ankle injury. In 2015, he rushed for 2,741 yards on 288 carries with 35 touchdowns. The season before that, while splitting carries, he rushed for 2,230 yards and 37 touchdowns on just 183 carries. Dobbins also held offers Texas, Oklahoma, Baylor, TCU, Texas A&M, California and Arkansas.

As a runner, Dobbins is completely comfortable in traffic and has the vision to move through it as if football was choreographed. According to his head coach Matt Kates, he could also be a D-I slot receiver if he wanted. Dobbins has been hand-timed at 4.30 in the 40-yard dash in the last year and was a state finalist in the Texas High School 100 meters as a freshman. He also played a little bit of quarterback when the need would arise.

The Comparison
This is a tough one because he's not like many other Buckeye running backs before him. He's roughly the same size as Carlos Snow from 25-odd years ago. He has similar quickness and speed to Butler By'not'e from nearly just as long ago. Dontre Wilson would be a fair comparison because they're both Texas running backs who could project into the slot. But it's rare to find a 5-foot-9 tailback with elite speed who is so comfortable running between the tackles. Maybe former Pitt running back and OSU recruit LeSean McCoy would be a fair comparison for the way he moves in traffic.

The Fit
Part of the difficulty in projecting a running back like J.K. Dobbins is also what makes him a pretty good fit for the Buckeyes. Those who know him believe that he is absolutely a three-down tailback all the way, and so maybe those folks should be believed. In terms of his skill set, he's a fit because he has great hands, has a willingness to pass block, and is accustomed to running between the tackles, because that's what he does in high school. Then there is also the fact that maybe he can do more than just be a tailback. Maybe he can be an H-back as well. And maybe his versatility is just what the Buckeyes are looking for.

Among his talents, Dobbins cites a combination of power, speed, explosiveness, and catching ability. He is driven by a "fear of being mediocre."

Uh, ok. 4* my arse! Those cuts though...geesh. Kid has it all. Speed, incredible vision, cuts, strength and even shows the hands a little bit. Love his game.

Reminds me of Tony Dorsett.
I was thinking more of Lesean McCoy right now. Figured Dorsett was a little too premature.
But the kid has a style that fits OSU perfectly
