Can you tell what play the opposing team will run before the ball is snapped?

(And for completeness, everyone can tell what play tOSU was going to run last season. That does not count. There is value in knowing what the other team will run.)

How did the coaches say they were going to use you at Ohio State? Did they tell you anything about recruiting other running backs in this class?
They said they would use me a little bit like they used Percy Harvin in the sense that I would be a guy who both runs the ball and catches some passes as a receiver. I do a lot of that in high school and I feel that is one of my strengths. As for other running backs, the staff told me they were planning on taking only one in our class, so I guess this could be it.

Inside Ohio State Football with Ezekiel Elliot

After a big recruiting weekend, the Buckeyes secured two commitments, one being St. Louis, Missouri running back Ezekiel Elliot.

Elliot is a speedy back who can also catch the ball out of the backfield?the exact type of back that Urban Meyer wants to have.

When Deveon Smith committed to UM, I really thought Urban was looking for a speed back with good hands to catch the ball. Elliot filled that role perfectly.

He took some time to answer a few questions.

MC: Many ND fans felt you were an Irish lock; what convinced you that Ohio State was the place for you?

EE: On my second visit to OSU, I was really impressed. ND is a great school, but after I researched the academics, met with the medical school, got to know a lot of people, I felt OSU was a good fit.

Meeting with professors in the medical college was important, but also I have strong relationships with Noah Spence, Armani Reeves and Cam Williams, and I spent a lot of time with them as well as David Perkins.

People sold me. Every school has good facilities, education, the difference is the people because these are people you spend the next four years with. OSU was a better fit for me.

MC: Have you talked to Brian Kelly? What did he say to you after you told him?

EE: I did not talk to Brian Kelly. I talked to coach Tont Alford and Bob Elliot, I told them. They were disappointed.

When I thought through this process, I did not want to waver. I want to keep my word; my OSU decision is final.

MC: What did Urban tell you your role would be?

EE: He wanted me as a Percy Harvin-type player. A player who can run and catch.

Multi-talented Elliott paces John Burroughs to Skippy Keefer boys title

LADUE ? Ezekiel Elliott hasn?t had many hiccups in his athletic career. One of them ? and he remembers it quite well ? occurred last spring in the Skippy Keefer Relays at John Burroughs High.

?I false started in the 300 hurdles, and we lost the meet by eight points,? Elliott said.

Satuday, he got a chance to make up for that mistake at the same meet. To say he was successful would be an understatement.

The junior won three individual events including the 110 hurdles (14.1), the 300 hurdles (39.35) and the 100-meter dash (10.9). He also combined with Sam Schnabel, Zach Lamb and Ted Grace to win the 1,600 relay in a time of 3:35.33.

Thanks a lot to Elliott?s performance, the Bombers were able to win the meet with 107 points. MICDS and defending champion Lutheran South both finished second with 85 points.

John Burroughs coach Daniel Harris was thrilled with Elliott?s performance.

?For Zeke, he makes an expectation every time he steps on the track to win,? Harris said. ?He doesn?t get too worried about times. He focuses on 'what do I have to do to not only win individually, but help my team win.' To have that kind of kid, who has that kind of winning attitude, is an awesome thing.?

Elliott was particularly focused on doing well in the 300 after his error last April.

?This year I had to make sure I came out and finished the race so we got those 10 points,? he said.

A standout football player who recently gave a verbal commitment to Ohio State University, Elliott obviously isn?t resting on his laurels. He is focused on reaching his potential on the track, which he also plans to compete in at the next level.

?You?ve got to keep working, keep working,? he said. ?There?s always somebody that?s better than you. You have to keep trying. Once I go to the next level, I?m going to have competition every week.?

Elliott had quite a battle with Grandview?s Dapo Akinmoladun at state last year. Elliott won the 110s in Class 3 by a nose over Akinmoladun but finished second to him in the 300 by six one-hundredths of a second.

With both of them back ? Elliott?s a junior and Akinmoladun?s a senior ? it should be another couple of exciting hurdles finals at state again if they both make it.

?I just want to walk away with two state championships in the hurdles,? Elliott said. ?Me and Dapo battled last year. We were pretty close to state records last year. Whoever?s going to win this year is going to break the state record. We?re probably both going to break it.?

Elliott expects to get a good warmup for state next week at the Henle Holmes Invitational, which is supposed to have some standout hurdlers including Ladue?s Jehu Chesson, the Class 4 state champion in the 300s last year, and Lafayette?s Chris Caldwell, the Class 4 state champion in the 110s.

?There?s going to be a lot of big-time hurdlers there,? Elliott said. ?There?s going to be some good times. It?s going to be a preview for state minus Dapo.?

A lightning quick running back with fantastic hurdling abilities...

Quick, can somebody with photoshop abilities superimpose a football under his right arm and Dymonte Thomas as a diving safety in place of the hurdle, with a caption of "Don't let this be your future."

I think realistically UFM knows that for every 5-10 athletes like this that he brings in, he may get 1 star. You then hope that some of the others are at least contributors. He tells the kids he plans on using them like Percy Harvin, because it's true. It's up to the players' performance to decide who gets the Percy Harvin playing time, though.
