Ezekiel Elliott injury update: Jerry Jones suggests RB will be available for Cowboys game against Vikings
Dallas Cowboys star running back Ezekiel Elliott is expected to return to action against the Minnesota Vikings, according to Cowboys' owner Jerry Jones via Yahoo Sports' Jori Epstein. Elliott has been sidelined since Week 7 game against the Detroit Lions after taking a hit to his left knee. He finished the game with 15 carries for 57 yards and two touchdowns. Elliott is dealing with a knee sprain and thigh bruise. The Vikings will battle Dallas fresh off a victory over Buffalo where they advanced to 8-1 on the year.
"We are a better team when we've got him and got him available," Jones said of Elliott via 105.3 The FAN. "Defenses are well aware, more than anybody, of his impact and availability. So I'm glad to have him back. And it does look like he's going to be available."
Zeke with a TD and a fine incoming for jumping into the Salvation Army kettle.
With 77 yards rushing he’s now surpassed 8,000 yards rushing and passed Garrison Hearst on the all-time list. He will likely crack the top 50 next game. He is now 12 yards behind Stephen Davis.
End of an era: Playoff loss looks like Ezekiel Elliott’s final game as a Dallas Cowboy
BY MAC ENGEL JANUARY 23, 2023 6:00 AM
In a mostly empty locker room, Dak Prescott took a seat in his locker, right next to his friend, Ezekiel Elliott. In a locker room that was awkwardly quiet, where most of their teammates cleared out to the team bus as quickly as possible, the combined silence between these two carried a heavier weight. The season was over, and the finality short of the desired goal is always hard enough. This was not only the end of the season. This is the end of era for the franchise, too. These two know. Zeke and Dak came to the Dallas Cowboys as rookies in the draft class of 2016, and in their time together they achieved so much.
Double digit win seasons. Division titles. Pro Bowls. Large contract extensions. Playoff wins. The Cowboys’ divisional round playoff loss against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday is likely the last we will see of this tandem together. While Dak will return to the team in 2023, it’s hard to envision a scenario where the Cowboys do anything other than release their former first round draft pick.
He knows it. After the game, in that empty locker room, I asked him if he believes he will be back for the 2023 season. To his credit, he didn’t lie and say he hasn’t thought about it. Or that the topic “is the furthest thing from his mind.” “I’ve definitely thought about it,” he said. “I want to be here. I don’t have a crystal ball. Can’t predict the future, but definitely want to be here.”
He had a career-low in rushing yards per carry this season.

Ezekiel Elliott Open to Pay Cut to Remain With Cowboys, per Report
Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott is open to taking a pay cut in order to stay with the team next season, The Dallas Morning News reported Monday.
Elliot, who is set to make 10.9 million in 2023, will reportedly look to negotiate his recently extended contract after a season that saw statistical lows and Tony Pollard emerge as the team’s running back of the future.
The three-time Pro Bowler signed a six-year extension worth $90 million in 2019 and is entering the first year of the deal where he doesn’t have any guarantees tied to his salary. Although not likely, Dallas could release Elliott and avoid paying him his $10.9 million salary for next season. However, per The Dallas Morning News, both sides have a mutual interest in getting a deal done.
After a 2022 season that featured the emergence of Tony Pollard, Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott's future in Dallas is more tenuous than ever. Pollard put forth a career-best campaign in a contract season, and NFL inisder Cynthia Frelund says the Cowboys are faced with the prospect of either restructuring Elliott's contract or outright releasing the former Ohio State star.
"It's my professional opinion that you'd be hard-pressed to find a data-focused analyst who would recommend against at least restructuring -- if not fully releasing -- just about any soon-to-be 28-year-old back with the highest cap number at the position," Frelund wrote. "There are exceptions to this kind of pronouncement -- I would count Derrick Henry, a 29-year-old back with the second-highest cap figure, among them -- but Zeke didn't even lead his own team in rushing this past season."

"I am not saying Zeke's no longer useful to Dallas -- he just scored eight touchdowns against stacked boxes, per Next Gen Stats, the highest total since his rookie season of 2016 -- but the price tag is off," Frelund wrote. "In his age-27 season, Elliott just set career lows in carries (231) and yards per carry (3.8). NGS also shows that he posted negative figures in rushing yards over expected (-58) and receiving yards over expected (-21) in 2022."
As a lifelong Cowboys fan (God help me) I was hoping Zeke could carry them to a title as he did OSU, but that idiot organization couldn't build around Dak on a rookie contract, then made the mistake of overpaying him. Meanwhile, they ran Zeke into the ground. He leads the NFL in touches and scrimmage yards since entering the league.
Hope he's able to continue his career, even as a back up, with a team that can compete for real.
