RB Chris "Beanie" Wells (All B1G, All-American)

May 31, 2012 - by Craig Morgan

Coach Ken Whisenhunt said RB Beanie Wells will continue to work on the side and avoid team drills as he rehabs from offseason knee surgery. "We're expecting to have both of these guys ready to go by training camp," Whisenhunt said of Wells and RB Ryan Williams, who is rehabbing following surgery for a torn patellar tendon. "Whatever we can get from them in the next two weeks would be a bonus."

Wells said that he's been picking up a bit more work every day.

"Today I did a little bit of running, a little bend and pulls and stuff to strengthen the quad,'' he said.

The knee itself, he said, "is a process that's getting better each day.''

"You've just got to get the confidence back in it,'' Wells said, "and the strength. Confidence comes from having strength in it.''

He said the goal is to participate in training camp, although it might not be "full-tilt'' right off the bat.

Despite the sore knee, Wells rushed for a career-high 1,045 yards and 10 touchdowns last season.

Wells stands 6-foot-2 and weighs 229, Williams is a rock-solid 5-9, 207.

"He's a lot more shifty than myself, a little quicker,'' Wells said. "I think he's going to do a heck of a job for us.''

Williams feels the same.

"He's the big power back but a lot of people don't know how fast Beanie really is. He's a pretty fast guy to be as big as he is. So power with speed,'' Williams said. "I'm not the fastest guy on the field but arguably one of the quickest and shiftiest. So those two dimensions on the field, it's pretty cool to have to complement each other.''

Is the pressure on Beanie Wells?

Beanie Wells had a breakout season in 2011 for the Arizona Cardinals.

The former first-round pick out of Ohio State ran for a career-high 1,047 yards on 245 carries in 14 games.

He did a lot to dispel to the label that he couldn't play through pain, too, often excelling despite being bothered by a knee injury for a good portion of the season.

Wells had right knee surgery on January 24 to repair a torn meniscus and more, and hasn't participated in OTAs or minicamp, which concluded Thursday afternoon. With only 41 days between the conclusion of minicamp and the first training camp practice in Flagstaff, there seems to be growing concern about Wells' readiness.

"He's got to to work himself back into being ready, and I think that's an important thing," head coach Ken Whisenhunt said Thursday. "We've done the right thing with Beanie, as far as the offseason about making sure he's healthy and trying to get him ready.

"He's gotta bust his tail over the next few weeks to be ready for training camp because we've had some guys look good there."

Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt raved last year about Wells' toughness and maturity. Wells gained 1,047 yards and averaged 4.3 yards a carry. Those aren't outrageous statistics for a No. 1 back who played in 14 games. But considering Wells played through a knee problem, 2011 was a step forward for him.

Still, there is a feeling around Cardinals headquarters that Wells needs to be pushed. That's not unusual for a player, or any other human for that matter. But it wasn't a coincidence that on the final day of off-season workouts, Whisenhunt commented that Wells should be ready for camp because other backs had looked good.

Will start the season on the PUP list....

Beanie Wells will start camp on PUP list, Ryan Williams won’t
Posted by Josh Alper on July 25, 2012, 10:52 AM EDT

The first battle for snaps in the Cardinals backfield has been won by Ryan Williams by default.

Beanie Wells is going to start camp on the physically-unable-to-perform list because of his surgically repaired knee, giving Williams the first shot to impress Cardinals coaches. Williams missed all of 2011 with a torn patella tendon, but the 2011 second-round pick was thought to have a strong shot of unseating Wells before the injury.

Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt downplayed the decision, saying that it was an expected course of action for Wells. He also told the team’s website that Wells has looked good and that he’s making strong progress toward a return.

“We were going to be conservative in our approach with him anyway,” Whisenhunt said.

Optimistic notes should be taken with a grain of salt with Wells. His knee surgery was originally described as being just a scope to clean things out, but Wells later revealed it was more serious and wound up missing all offseason work after saying that he wouldn’t miss any of it. Throw in reports out of Arizona that Wells has some issues motivating himself and you’ve got a door open for Williams with the Cardinals, one that isn’t showing any signs of closing.

Beanie Wells says he'll be ready for the season

Arizona Cardinals update:

The plan all along, running back Beanie Wells said Wednesday, was for him to start training camp on the physically unable to perform list. No surprise, he said, although a lot of people were just that: surprised.

Wells is recovering from knee surgery to fix, uh, something in there. Wells hasn't said what was repaired. Here was his explanation on Wednesday:

"I had a scope and we did some things in there. Kind of let some things settle down and get right."

Wells said he is being patient because he prepared himself mentally for his rehab. "I'm going to take my time," he said. "I don't think anybody wants to see a 75 percent Beanie Wells. Everybody wants to see a 100 percent Beanie Wells and that's what I want to give."

Meanwhile, Ryan Williams is practicing and estimated he's at about 85 percent. He looked quick on a handful of carries during the afternoon session. Wells said he doesn't feel pressured by Williams' progress.

Wells said he would start practicing in a few weeks, in plenty of time to get ready for the season opener.

Beanie Wells, Ryan Williams bring thunder and lightning pop to backfield
by Kent Somers on Jul. 26, 2012, under Arizona Republic Sports

FLAGSTAFF ? It takes a certain amount of imagination or faith to envision just how much of a threat the Cardinals running backs could be this fall.

Beanie Wells and Ryan Williams are expected to share duties but have never played together. Wells remains out while recovering from knee surgery, while Williams missed all of last year, his rookie season, with a torn patellar tendon.

The plan is for both to be healthy when the regular season starts. If so, they could form a productive duo, with styles that contrast, yet complement each other.

?You?ve got Beanie?s power, he?s explosive,? offensive coordinator Mike Miller said. ?When he gets rolling, he?s a punishing guy. Then you?ve got Ryan, who can also be punishing in his own way, but also a slasher and shows flashes of finishing speed.?

LaRod Stephens-Howling?s skills in the passing game and on draw plays give Miller lots of room for creativity in deciding how to use his running backs.

The hitch in this grand plan, however, is that Wells and Williams are coming off serious knee problems. The Cardinals are confident the two will be ready for the season, based on the opinion of the team?s medical staff.

The coaching staff is doing its part by planning to use Williams and Wells, whenever he?s able to practice, conservatively in the opening weeks of training camp.

Beanie will play in preseason, may practice next week
Posted by Darren Urban on July 30, 2012

Running back Beanie Wells, still on the PUP list with his knee rehab, will play in the preseason at some point, coach Ken Whisenhunt said. He may also come off the PUP list next week, when the team practices in Kansas City.

?He will probably start doing some work next week,? Whisenhunt said. ?We?d like to get him involved in preseason games, probably a little bit later. We?ll see how it goes.?

Coach Whisenhunt expects Beanie Wells back soon
By Adam Green/Arizona Sports

Beanie Wells was placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list at the beginning of training camp, a move that has led many to worry about the running back's status coming into the season.

And why shouldn't they?

Wells, who ran for a career-best 1,047 yards and 10 touchdowns last season, had knee surgery in the offseason and has yet to get back on the practice field.

Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt, though, said Monday that Wells is progressing nicely and should return to the field soon.

"We'll see Beanie in the preseason," Whisenhunt said. "I think he'll probably start doing some work next week."

With Hall trip, Beanie goes home
Posted by Darren Urban on August 2, 2012

Beanie Wells has said a few times that he isn?t frustrated with his current status on the PUP list, that it was all part of the knee rehab he was going to go through in training camp. And he is likely going to return to practice next week, so he doesn?t have to wait much longer.

That won?t make this weekend?s trip to the Hall of Fame game and the Canton/Akron area any easier. Wells finally had a chance to play at home, and it won?t happen.

?It does suck because I?d like to play there for the first time since high school,? Wells said. ?It is what it is. Circumstances are what they are.?

For Beanie, this is different than going to play in Cleveland or Cincinnati. When he played for Akron Garfield High School, he went against Canton GlenOak in a game at Fawcett Stadium in 2005, where the Cardinals and Saints play Sunday. (Beanie ran for 263 yards and five touchdowns in an overtime loss.) His mother lives just a five-minute bike ride away.

?I went there (to the Hall of Fame) as a kid all the time,? Wells said. ?It was absolutely a fun thing to go to, to see all the monuments there.?

Beanie wanted to give a tour of his hometown to teammates, but that may not work out since the team is staying outside Cleveland about an hour away. Still, Wells was animated when talking about local eateries he grew up with.

?You have to try Swensen?s,? he said. ?And Tiffany?s Bakery.?

Arizona Cardinals running back Beanie Wells' 1st practice a cautious debut
by Kent Somers - Aug. 7, 2012

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - Running back Beanie Wells practiced for the first time this year on Tuesday, the same day he turned 24 for the first time. But Wells is unlikely to play in the preseason game Friday against the Chiefs.

Wells, who had surgery on his right knee this off-season, was activated from the physically-unable-to-perform list on Tuesday.

But with four preseason games remaining, the Cardinals don't feel the need to rush Wells back on the field.

"We're going to be conservative with working him back in," coach Ken Whisenhunt said.

Tuesday morning's walkthrough was the first time since 2011 that Wells joined his teammates on the practice field. He did not practice during minicamp or voluntary practices and missed the first two weeks of training camp.

Wells' preseason debut is more likely to come next week against the Raiders than Friday against the Chiefs.

"That's what I'm looking forward to," Wells said. "It's all going to be based on how I feel."

Asked whether he would play this week, Wells said: "I don't know; miracles do happen. I'm not saying it would take a miracle, but things do happen, so who knows?"

Wells is wearing a large brace on his right knee.
