A native of Cincinnati, the mean neighborhood in which he was raised cause his mother to send him to Naples, Fla., to live with his grandmother through high school. Scout.com ranked him the No.1 fullback prospect nationally and rivals.com had him No.2 in the class 2009 after he rushed for 1,653 yards and 16 TDs his senior season. He spent fall 2009 at Fork Union (Va.) Military Academy strengthening his academics.
Q ? Why did you say one of the things you learned to appreciate at Fork Union was reading books?
A ? I had so much free time there, I just started reading. The first book I picked up was Native Son. I really got into that book. And I read coach (Jim) Tressel?s book (The Winners Manual) and coach (Tony) Dungy?s book Uncommon. I liked Uncommon a lot,
Q ? Why?
A -- Because I could understand where he was coming from, how he grew up to be a man, how you should treat females -- it?s just about all around life, how you should try to live. It is a positive book, and I felt like I really needed to read a book like that.
Q ? What have you seen as the benefits to becoming a reader?
A ? You like what the books say, for one thing, but it also helps you be smarter in class, it helps with your vocabulary and all kinds of things.
Q ? When you moved back north from Naples, what was the biggest readjustment you had to make?
A ? I had to get ready for this cold weather. I?d gotten used to the heat. So I had to go buy a coat, some boots. And I had to buy some jeans because all I wore was shorts in Naples.
