On how earning his degree with the help of the Degree Completion Program helped him professionally after his football career ended

?I had around 45 hours to complete when I returned to Ohio State. It took me about a year and a half to complete because when I came back, I was told I could graduate with a double major in business economics and African American studies if I took 20 more hours. So, I decided to enter in the dual degree program and graduated in December 2006.

I knew coming back was something that was important for me to do and it?s had a tremendous impact on my life. Graduating is one of those things, when you finish, that gives you a sense of closure and purpose to what you were doing outside of athletics at Ohio State. It?s opened up a lot of doors and given me that piece of paper you need behind you to actually go forward and do great things outside of football.

This year was my first year as a football commentator with the Big Ten Network which was exciting because I had the opportunity to meet and work with a lot of experienced hosts. I learned a lot from them and I look forward to contributing more. Coming from Ohio State, I was used to being in the limelight and had the chance to do interviews. It?s tough now to be on the other side and be the one asking questions but it?s something I look forward to continuing.

Besides working with the Big Ten Network, I also work for a real estate development company called KBK Enterprises here in Columbus. It is one of the largest African American real estate development firms in the country. Right now we have two projects, one in Pittsburgh that is worth $69 million, and the other in New Orleans that is worth $114 million.

When I first left Ohio State, the program hadn?t been started at the university. But a few years later, I heard about the Degree Completion Program by word of mouth through my teammates. I initially came back in 1998 and finished one quarter before coming back in 2006. It?s different now because the university has put some muscle behind it to alert more student-athletes of this program which is a great thing.

Besides playing football, I also ran track my sophomore, junior and senior year. Coach (John) Cooper had given me the option when I was being recruited to run track after I finished one season, including spring ball. It was extremely tough to be a two-sport athlete because you went straight from summer conditioning to the football season in the fall. After completing the football season and bowl game, I went straight into the training for outdoor track and right back again to football conditioning. For four years, I had somewhere to be everyday at 2:30-3 o?clock.

It was really good for me to come back and just be a student because I realized the importance of my education and took classes a lot more seriously than I had.?

By?not?e played with the Carolina Panthers and Denver Broncos of the of the National Football League. He also was a Big Ten relay champion for Ohio State track and field.

Butler By'not'e is a player that I've always had great respect for. When Butler came out of high school (I believe from Missouri) he had pretty much his pick of Colleges that he could have started for, and starred for. Butler chose to attend TOSU even though we had Robert Smith coming in as the #1 or #2 RB in the country.

This guy was obviously never afraid of the "competition." And, he did a very nice job here when he was on the field. It's great to hear that things are going good for him. He obviously loves TOSU, and we as fans should be appreciative of his efforts on the field, as how he's representing out there in the "real world." Way to go Butler!

Once a Buckeye, always a Buckeye!

Peace.

By'not'e next former Buckeye to star for Men of Gideon
By KURT MOORE
The Marion Star

MARION ? Former Ohio State football player Butler By?not?e will be appearing in Marion on Monday, but the gridiron won?t be the topic of the day.

By?not?e will be part of an effort by the Men of Gideon ministry to show the human side of athletes. The ministry aims to show men that they can overcome their struggles with God?s help.

?Most men struggle in some areas with something,? said Men of Gideon co-founder Stanley Jackson, a former Buckeye and current quarterback for the Marion Mayhem. Athletes, he said, are no different.

?The truth is they are ordinary men. This kind of shows a more realistic side of celebrities.?

Butler B?ynote? at the pulpit at Northwest Church of the Nazarene

On a still summer evening in 2005, Butler B?ynote? parked outside Ohio Stadium and sat staring at the historic structure ? a range of emotions stirred by his memories.

He recalled the thrill of cheers raining down when he scored touchdowns as an Ohio State running back from 1990 to 1993.

He remembered the frustration of playing less than he thought he deserved to play, both at OSU and along his winding road through the NFL and other professional football leagues.

And, finally, he felt an unexpected surge of gratitude: His playing days over, he had recently returned to OSU to finish his college degree. At age 32, he had made a break with his past ? leaving his hometown of St. Louis and a bad marriage.

B?ynote?, a religious person, sensed that all of his life experiences until then were meant to prepare him for something bigger: a career in the ministry.

?The Lord spoke to me and said, ?All those times that you struggled, all those nights that you cried, every time your name was called in that stadium, every . . . (touchdown) you scored was all set up for now.?

?And he also said: ?I let you do everything your way. You wanted to play in the NFL; you married someone I told you not to. Now, I?ve brought you back full circle to start over, to give you a second chance.?  ?

B?ynote? embraced the opportunity.

?I was just so overwhelmed with joy and excitement,? he said, ?because rarely do you get a second chance in life.?

Meyer on Monday credited another person with the season's turnaround.

Former running back Butler By'not'e.

By'not'e, Meyer said, was the guest speaker the morning of Sept. 16 at the team's chapel service. After a sleepless night in which the first-year coach said he resisted the urge to call a 2 a.m. staff meeting because he was so motivated by Simon's speech, Meyer readied himself for a talk from By'not'e.

"If you love something that much," Meyer said, recalling By'not'e's message, "if you're a Christian and you love your god and savior that much, if you're a husband and you love your wife that much, if you're a father and you love your children that much, or if you're a teammate and you love your team that much, there are three things involved."

The first, By'not'e said, was choice. If you love something that much, your choices are no longer choices, but rather commandments you live by.

The second, By'not'e said, was making inordinate sacrifice. If you want to get rid of selfishness, laziness or things that tear at what you want to accomplish, one must eliminate those things and not expend energy on them.

The third, By'not'e told the chapel attendees, was time ? devoting all your time for the thing you love.

Meyer said he scribbled notes feverishly as By'not'e spoke, his mind darting back to Simon's speech the previous day as he drew comparisons between the two talks.

"As (By'not'e) closed up, I was wiping the tears on my face," Meyer said. "I knew I was a better person. I learned a lot."

Several minutes later on that Sunday afternoon, Meyer addressed his team as a new man after hearing the former OSU running back talk.

Between Simon and By'not'e, Meyer said, "I found out what was going to drive the 2012 Ohio State football team through the rest of the season."
