The play overshadowed an impressive performance by Piqua back Brandon Saine. The 6-foot, 218-pounder, who has committed to Ohio State, totaled 368 yards and five touchdowns. He had a 98-yard kickoff return and runs of 7, 14, 14 and 39 yards. He had three kickoff returns for 207 yards and rushed 14 times for 149 yards.
"His speed kind of got to us, but a lot of it was just our fault," said Helton, who also had an interception to end the first half. "We weren’t finishing our tackles."
Tomorrow I will write up a more polished breakdown of the game for the front page... and of course I will process and post the photos.
In the meantime, here are some of my quick thoughts on the game...
Brandon Saine is not a WR or an ATH, he is a RB. He is not explosive in changing directions(so I don't see him replacing Ginn), and he dropped a couple of uncontested passes. Too bad for Grove City he was still ridiculously dominant.
This kid is growing into a monster as a true RB! His straight line speed is outstanding, but his vision seems to have improved and he is POWERFUL. He ran through a ton of tackles, including one run up the gut where he literally ran over 4 separate guys on his way to a long TD run. He can be tackled, but you better have perfect form, good size and some backup help for when he runs right through it.
He was so huge for his team... Grove City was absolutely dominating after 2 drives each, up 14-0. Saine caught the KR and exploded thru a seam, ran right through a tackler, and darted for the KR TD. Grove City scored again, dared Saine with another kickoff, which he took back to the 10 yard line. That was the last time they kicked to him :)
He ended up with 3 TDs on the ground to go with his 1 KR td.
The best part is that he is a classy kid, he plays with 110% effort, but after he reaches the end zone you'd think it was a half-speed practice drill b/c there is no celebration at all.
There was absolutely no defense on the field today... save for a couple of drives. The scoreboard totalled 89 points, 41-47 for Grove City. Grove City was able to jam it right down the throats of piqua and reguarly gain 5+ yards on first down.
Piqua killed itself with penalties (they must have had 8 false start / encroachment penalties), including the drive that put GC over the top. Unlike most of the night, Piqua was stuffing GC's offense. On the first set of downs, they gave them a free 5 yards by jumping early. On the next set of downs, they earned a 3rd and long, flushed the QB out of the pocket, and then were flagged for pass interference (regardless of whether the call was legit, I believe the WR was well short of the sticks, no need to risk it).
Piqua also had a dazzling sweep by #24, where he zigged and zagged forever and then exploded for 60 yards... which came back for a blocking penalty. There were at least 3 other holding penalties.
Brandon Saine rushed for 127 yards (11.5 ypc), gained 330 all-purpose yards, and scored 4 tds (1 KR, 3 Rush). His tremendous speed is a given. However, his vision and strength were very impressive. Brandon was a tackle breaking machine, including 4 during his long, game-tying TD (41-41) late in the 4th.
* Animation #1 - Saine 2nd KR: After taking the last one for a score, Brandon took this one down to the 10. That was the last time they kicked the ball to him. His other return was more impressive (pictured above), as he ran right through a tackler before darting to the endzone.
* Animation #2 - Saine Rushing TD: Wrapped up inside, breaks free, bounces it outside, runs through a tackle and scores.
