Saine aims for state record in 100; top foe may sit out

Michigan champion Rashad has faster times than Piqua star, but it's unclear whether he'll run this weekend.

A balky hamstring may keep Piqua's Brandon Saine from setting a state 100-meter record at the Don Mitchell Roosevelt Memorial track meet.

No, it's not Saine who has the injury. Rather, Michigan's defending 100 and 200 champion — Ahmad Rashad — is scheduled to compete today and Saturday but hasn't been on the track much this season.

The University of Southern California track recruit (he's not the son of ex-NFL player Ahmad Rashad) ran in a meet Wednesday. But Rashad just ran the second leg in a couple relays.

"He's been injured all year," Flint Carman-Ainsworth coach Kenn Domerese said. "He hurt himself the week after he won the national (indoor) 60.

"We didn't want him to come out of the blocks. He's completely out of shape. He's not 100 percent. His dad's all fired up to bring him down there.

It's kind of against our wishes. He's kind of a free spirit."

Outside of the Rashads, no one is certain if the Michigan sprinter will be at Welcome Stadium on Saturday.

"If he doesn't rip his hammy again, we'll be shocked," Domerese said.

"Normally, we happily send him away (to meets with his father Kevin). But he's a great student, a great citizen and an incredible track talent."

Domerese, whose team has won multiple Michigan big-school boys state team titles, said Rashad's best times are 10.21 in the 100 and 20.8 in the 200.

Domerese figures Rashad would probably only run the 100 at the Roosevelt, which has preliminaries Saturday morning and a final at 1:30 p.m.

That would match Saine's day. Ohio State's newest football recruit said he'll go for an Ohio regular-season state 100-meter record. Piqua's prom is Saturday, so he's going to keep some energy for dancing. But running against an almost-healthy standout could push his time low.

"It would be real nice to run against (Rashad)," Saine said. "With me running just one event, I want to try to break the state record."

The Ohio High School Athletic Association Web site lists official track records. In D-I, the best mark (10.48) belongs to Cincinnati Princeton's Mario Allman in 1990. In D-II, the best is Willard's Eric Barris (10.55), set in 2002. In D-III, Cadiz' Denver Williams (10.55) is listed along with Jefferson's Tony Lee (10.4 hand-timed) in 1988.

For those who would like to see Saine on defese- What position? We are loaded at safety and already have a plethora of talent likely coming in this year. I guess LB is a posibility but we got 4 last year and have good shots at Dailey and Hines if we offer. I think Saine is just too fast and too explosive to put on defense. I could see him at WR, but I like him right where he is at. I think we could use him like USC did with Reggie Bush.

It has been stated by some that he has very good hands.

I see us using him like Reggie Bush was early in his career. I think he could line up in the backfield and motion out and create mismatches with linebackers.

Also I think the thing about Saine as a rb is just his running style, but that is the way that he gets to top end speed, so he is able to out run guys to the corner, but he isnt going to be able to do that and he is giving his whole body to get tackled so he will be brought down easily. I saw some of this out of Mo Wells last year, but this spring not as much.

I think Saine's size will help him, and I think that the S&C coaches can teach him how to run at a top speed football style, if that makes since.

Any way you look at it, tho he is a football player, with a ton of speed that seems fearless in his films as he runs over ppl and drags them. He could play a number of positions and once he finds that position and concentrates on it, he has the measurables to be an all-american. Also lets remember he is still only in his junior year of school and has another whole football season ahead of him and the coaches have time to let him know what he needs to work on, and he might not of really known before hand.

'07 OH RB Brandon Saine (Ohio State Verbal)

I don't know if anyone else has seen this kid, but he is flat out amazing. His speed is incredible and his ability to lay a hit on someone is very good also. I feel that he could come into OSU immediatley and contribute back returning punts and kickoffs, his speed is too good to waste a redshirt on, here is a link to see his Junior Year Highlights.

Craigblitz- Saine has excellent hands trust me. Saine I could see as a DB for sure but I just think if we get all DB talent we are in on this year in Ohio that we will have Saine on offense either in the slot or, more preferably, in a Bush-like way.

BOYS TRACK
Saine breaks record in time for prom

By Marc Pendleton
Staff Writer

DAYTON — Brandon Saine's goal at Saturday's Roosevelt Memorial Relays was to set a state record.
To do that, he'd have to keep his 100 meters throttle open. Unbeaten at the distance since last year, the Piqua junior often shuts down to save himself for later races.
But Saturday, all that awaited Saine was 10 seconds of red-line hoofing. A date at Piqua High School's prom bumped his usual 100-400-200 trifecta.
"I ran through the line and didn't slow up," said Saine, who set an all-time state record of 10.38. "It was good. I've been having trouble doing that."
According to Ohio High School Athletic Association records, Saine eclipsed the 10.48 that Princeton's Mario Allmon blew out in a 1990 Dayton regional. An allowable tailwind of 1.6 mph was recorded during Saine's race. Approval of his effort should be a formality.
Glenville's Raymond Small was second (10.55), followed by Stephen Robinson of Trotwood-Madison (10.66) and Tippecanoe's Nick Landis (10.88).
That high-end field push wasn't lost on Saine.
"I like to run with these guys," he said. "They help me run faster."
This likely won't be the last time Saine threatens the record, and others. He favors the 400 and already owns a 46.80.
"That would be sweet to go in the 45s," he said.
Zoom-zoom-zoom
Small came up big in Glenville's third straight team title. He also won the 200 (21.51) and anchored the Tarblooders' winning 400 relay (41.97).
Headed to Ohio State as a wide receiver, Small blew a hamstring at state in '05. This time he was blown away by Saine.
"I was really looking forward (to racing Saine)," Small said. "This won't be the last time."
Pay up
T-M hit the jackpot by winning the 1,600 relay (3:16.67).
Trotwood's Allen Moore (49.72), Darison Williams (48.79), Brandon Henderson (49.46) and Robinson (48.70) all cracked 50 seconds to beat Glenville by one second. T-M also edged Glenville at the Eastmoor Invitational.
Afterward a jubilant T-M backer collected a big pile of money from Glenville patrons.
"This race right here is what we live for and it's what our coaches live for," said Williams, who stretched a slight advantage into the winning margin on the second leg.
"(There's) probably a lot of (money bet on the outcome). A whole lot of it."
Fast track
• Wayne junior Jordan McPherson popped a 22-2 1/4 into the wind to take the long jump from defending champ and runner-up Marcus Grayson of Fort Wayne, Ind.
• North senior Vince Corner became the first area high hurdler to crack 14 seconds in winning the highs (13.82).
• Yellow Springs junior Sam Borchers blazed a 1:01 final lap to win the 1,600 (4:16.96).
• T-M's Robinson also was second in the 400 (48.31) and 200 (21.57), and Williams was third in the 200 (21.59).

Saine breaks state 100-meter record

The Piqua junior runs 10.38 seconds to defeat a loaded field ... then heads to prom.

By Mark Gokavi
Staff Writer

DAYTON | Brandon Saine had everything set for Prom Night.

All-white tuxedo. Check. Japanese food for dinner. Check. Ohio state high school 100-meter dash record. Check.

The Piqua junior and Ohio State football recruit made his lone race count Saturday at the 32nd Don Mitchell Roosevelt Memorial track meet.

His time of 10.38 seconds at Welcome Stadium bested all record times on the Ohio High School Athletic Association Web site. There was a slight tailwind, but it did not exceed the maximum allowed for record purposes.

"It was real exciting," Saine said. "I have a bunch of family here and everything. It makes it even better."

While Saine's expected top rival — Ahmad Rashad of Flint (Mich.) Carman-Ainsworth — didn't run because of an injury, Cleveland Glenville's Ray Small did, posting a blazing 10.55 of his own. The competition, warm weather and tailwind combined to help Saine make history, surpassing the 10.48 run by Princeton's Mario Allmon in 1990.

"It was nice to focus on this one race," Saine said. "I'm done for the day."
Saine won the Division I 100 and 400 meters last year as a sophomore.

As part of the whole debate on what position Brandon will be playing... does anybody think it all depends on what happens with Ray Small & Derrell Johnson. If both are able to come in, then I assume Saine stays at RB. If only one or both don't come in, then Saine becomes a WR.

Also, could the situation holding up Derrell becoming a Buckeye have anything to do with Ray and his status? Once Ray find out if he is eligable, will the Derrell Johnson situation finally be resolved? (maybe more suited for another thread, but thought that since I was kind of on the topic I would just plae it here...:))

How come other fan sites are so shitty compared to ours. I just looked at umgoblow.com and it was hilarious to see how shitty it is, sorry this is kind of off topic but i couldnt resist.

UM is the greater educational institution, therefore they have the superior websites. Its proven U.S. News said so....... Even the architect that designed the "Big House" says so.
