RB Brandon Schnittker (official thread)

we still have our first string power back... he wears #10. Schnitt got some carries, but not that many.

The bigger change here is the backup RB on normal plays. Schnitt was used a lot, and many of us wanted to see Wells. Tressel talks as tho he is now coming along (after getting overwhelmed a little as classes began, typical freshman experience).

I want to see more of Wells outside of garbage time, so that the box is not loaded with 8-9 guys. Schnitt just ran in a line on most non-short yardage runs, which Wells is very capable of doing. I think it will be a big upgrade, as we will not lose speed when Pittman needs a break. Wells on the option could be deadly.

Then next year we can run a triple option with CWells up the middle, and then Pitt (or haw) outside with Smith. :) Ok, turning off my ncaa game now

Our running back situation next year isnt going to even be fair. We have the #1 ranked back in the nation coming in, along with another Wells that has great potential and speed...and dont forget about Pittman, I believe he is ranked #16 in yards in the whole NCAA.

Oh yeah, and our offensive line is really going to be amazing, with all the talent and size we have been recruiting up front.

I know where you are going here, but if the starting QB is considered the main power option, we are in big trouble. The 4th and 1 QB sneak showed how limited that option really is...beyond the point of how many direct shots Smith is taking. I love heart, but some common sense has to be used as well in those situations.

I think on 4th and 1 we should have been handing it off. I was merely saying that even if Schnittker was healthy, we would have used Smith in an option/draw most of the time.

Schnittker was bigger than our other RBs, but he wasn't that "powerful" of a big back. I would say Troy is better at driving the pile and breaking tackles than brandon.

In space, yes, but how many tackles do you honestly want your QB to break? Granted its a mostly a situational call, but broken tackles usually lead to direct hits from a pursuing defense. Smith is one good shot away from joining Culpepper...and I'm not sure I would risk that.

There really shouldn't be a whole lot of thinking to do here. Johnson is a fullback, plain and simple (as is Schnittker, despite how he was being used). That leaves Wells and Haw as our scholarship RBs. Wells is hardly a power runner, and Haw is decent-sized (listed as 210, but I'd be surprised if he isn't at least 220 after a year-plus in the weight room), so I'd say bump Haw up as the power back. If Haw doesn't cut it as "power" back, then use Johnson there in addition to blocking FB.

I don't know if I want Troy taking all of those hits, however I have yet to see him look weakened after lots of hits (whereas Craig looked that way many times, but played thru it). It really is too bad Haw is not getting it done in practice, b/c we could really use him here.

I am not suggesting that Troy running frequently is a good thing, tho it is good to see him feel free to scramble again after waiting in the pocket (as opposed to the PSU Troy who was overcompensating by never scrambling).

I am merely suggesting that Schnittker just barreled straight ahead. If you give Pittman the holes that Schnittker had on a number of those goal line plays, AP would score as well.

Exactly!
