As a freshman, Archie Griffin tied the OSU all-time record for rushing yards in a game.

If Ohio State was to construct a Buckeye-inspired Mount Rushmore on its Columbus campus, only one question would be asked.

Would Archie Griffin sport the short hair he has now or the classic afro he had while becoming the nation?s only two-time Heisman Trophy winner?

His relationship with OSU has spanned decades, first as a player and student, then assistant athletic director and now the president and CEO of OSU?s Alumni Association.

The beloved Archie is without much doubt the player of the 1970s, but could even be the greatest player to ever suit up in Scarlet and Gray, said Jack Park, author of The Official Ohio State Football Encyclopedia.

?There is no doubt about it,? Park said. ?He is the player, of all the great players to ever play at Ohio State, his impact on the program is probably the greatest. In my opinion, it is the greatest.?

Suspended juniors received pep talk in visit with Griffin

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

NEW ORLEANS - Even though Archie Griffin can't play Tuesday for Ohio State in the Sugar Bowl, he has already had a featured role in preparations for the game.

On Monday, Griffin welcomed the five Ohio State juniors sanctioned by the NCAA into his home. The players, including quarterback Terrelle Pryor, were suspended the first five games of next season partly for selling memorabilia such as the gold pants medallions given for beating Michigan, Big Ten championship rings and the like.

Eventually, the tour included the lower level of Griffin's home, where the two-time Heisman Trophy winner displays most of his awards and gold pants medallions.

"I talked about getting up after being knocked down, that this was certainly a blow," Griffin said. "But one of the things we all learn from the game that we play, whatever sport it might be, is you move forward after something like this, and try to be the best you can be."

Part of the purpose for the visit was for the players to apologize and explain themselves to Griffin in his role as president of the Ohio State Alumni Association. But as the visit wore on, it became more about Griffin encouraging the players.

"I mentioned to them that, 'You're not going to please everybody, that there are going to be people who are going to be upset with you,'" he said. "Even at the bowl game, there may be some jeers and whatnot, but if you know in your heart you are sorry for what happened, all you can do is take control of the things you can control, and that's your actions. Basically, just go out and try to make folks proud by the way you perform and by the way you carry yourself.'"

Griffin will continue to help Ohio State right up until kickoff against Arkansas: He is scheduled to represent the Buckeyes for the coin toss.

Q&A with Ohio State great Archie Griffin
Published: Tuesday, January 04, 2011
Ted Lewis, The Times-Picayune

Ohio State?s Archie Griffin remains the only two-time Heisman Trophy winner (1977-78).

Said two-time Heisman Trophy winner Archie Griffin: 'By any standard, 11-1 is a great season, especially considering the level of competition we (Ohio State) faced.'

After an eight-year NFL career, he has held a variety of posts at his alma mater, most recently executive director of the Ohio State Alumni Association. The Buckeyes legend recently talked with staff writer Ted Lewis.

At Ohio State, the expectation level is so high. Should fans feel let down that the Buckeyes are 11-1 and in the Sugar Bowl instead of playing for the national championship?

I don?t think they should be disgruntled. Of course, going into every season at a school like Ohio State you feel like you have the opportunity to be undefeated and play for a national championship. That?s the attitude that?s pretty much expected from the players as well as the fans. You want to be playing at the highest level. But by any standard, 11-1 is a great season, especially considering the level of competition we faced.

The five players facing suspension for the first five games of next season came to your home to apologize. How did you feel about it?

Maybe going in they didn?t feel like they were doing anything wrong. But I guarantee you, they see it now. There are a lot of teaching moments coming out of this. And don?t forget this whole thing has been very tough on them and their families, and that?s what they were trying to do ? take some burdens off their families. They?re not sorry because they were caught; they?re sorry for what they did, and they?ve got a better understanding of what it?s all about. When you?re 18-19 years old, you?re going to make mistakes. We all did, and everyone should remember that.

Is Jim Tressel getting to the point where he should be mentioned with Woody Hayes as the greatest coach ever at Ohio State?

I think he?s getting there. Tress has been fabulous. When you think of the number of Big Ten championships he?s won, six straight now, playing in three national championships games, wining one. He is such a good guy and such a good football coach. If you put that over the number of years Coach Hayes was here, then you?ll probably wind up with something pretty equal.

Following the completion of his senior year, Griffin received the NCAA's Top Five Award, the highest award the NCAA can bestow, for combined excellence in athletics, academics and leadership.
January 1, 1973-74-75-76

Griffin started in the Rose Bowl in all four seasons, the only player ever to do so. He led them to one win, a 42-21 triumph over Southern Cal in the 1975 game.
December 1974-75

Griffin became just the fifth junior ever to win the Heisman Trophy, this after running for 1,695 yards and 12 touchdowns, both career highs, and then became the first and only two-time winner in his final season.
November 15, 1975

Griffin racked up 124 yards in a 38-6 win over Minnesota, marking his 31st straight game with at least 100 yards and 33rd overall, both of which still stand as NCAA records.
September 15-November 24, 1973

Griffin became the first Ohio State freshman to rush for 1,000 yards (1,577), leading the Buckeyes to their second of four straight Rose Bowls.
September 30, 1972

In just his second game, Griffin ran for a school-record 239 yards in a 29-14 win over North Carolina.
September 16, 1972-November 22, 1975

A four-year starter, Griffin rushed for 5,177 yards on 845 carries (6.1 yards per carry), excluding bowl games, and totaled an OSU record 5,589 yards and 26 touchdowns.

Looks like I need to send a memo to the Big Ten offices.

Brian Cushing of USC matched that accomplishment in the Jan '09 Rose Bowl.
