They went from 5 to 6 overall, but the real indivator is how many points they've earned in the last 15 years compared to the teams now in the top-5:

This has been updated after the final polls for the 2020 season.

OK, here's how this was calculated. I took each team's ranking in every year-end poll since the AP started in 1936. Once 2 polls were involved (the Coaches Poll started in 1950), I always used the higher ranking. Sliding scale points were awarded for every year that a team ended up ranked, and 10 points were deducted for each losing season. The scale was determined before seeing where teams ended up.

For each year since 1936, a team earns points based on these criteria:

NC (#1) in either poll = 100 points
02 -> 05 = 65, 55, 50, 45 points, respectively
06 -> 10 = 40, 37, 34, 32, 30 points
11 -> 20 = 28, 26, 24, 22, 20, 18, 16, 14, 12, 10 points

non-ranked, but .500 or above = 0 points
losing record for the year = minus 10 points

I'm not going to do this for all of the teams, like BB73 did (awesome work, again, by the way), but check out the consistency of Ohio State over the years:

Starting with Woody Hayes in 1951, he coached for 28 years. He led them to 18 seasons where they finished in the AP top 25. And 3 of the years they weren't in the AP top 25, they were in the coaches' top 25. Their "down years" were 1962-1967, when they finished in the AP top 25 once, and outside 5 times.
Then he got fired and they brought in Earle Bruce. I had always felt his time was very mediocre. But check out his numbers: until 1987 (his last year) they ALWAYS finished in the top 15, with 3 top 10 finishes. But then came the really down years: 5 years with only 1 top 25 finish. But then Cooper's teams went on a streak of 7 consecutive years with top 25 finishes, including a #6 and 2 #2 finishes.
Then of course, 3 unranked finishes.
But then Jim Tressell's teams ran off 9 consecutive ranked seasons, with only 2004 being outside the top 10.
Then 2011.
Since 2012, only 2 seasons have finished outside the top 6.

Other than about 1977 to about 1992, which wasn't as bad as I had once thought it was, Ohio State didn't really go on long streaks of mediocrity since 1951.

I'm not saying that no one else can make that claim, but I'm fairly confident that not many other teams have this level of consistency.

This has been updated after the final polls for the 2022 season.

OK, here's how this was calculated. I took each team's ranking in every year-end poll since the AP started in 1936. Once 2 polls were involved (the Coaches Poll started in 1950), I always used the higher ranking. Sliding scale points were awarded for every year that a team ended up ranked, and 10 points were deducted for each losing season. The scale was determined before seeing where teams ended up.

For each year since 1936, a team earns points based on these criteria:

NC (#1) in either poll = 100 points
02 -> 05 = 65, 55, 50, 45 points, respectively
06 -> 10 = 40, 37, 34, 32, 30 points
11 -> 20 = 28, 26, 24, 22, 20, 18, 16, 14, 12, 10 points
21 -> 25 = 08, 06, 04, 03, 02 points
non-ranked, but .500 or above = 0 points
losing record for the year = minus 10 points
