Rate a Position....Part 2..RB

BB73 Just wondering, but does Georgia have a defense? :wink2:

They were ranked 52 amongst all DIV 1 last year against the rush giving up 144 yard a game. So again, I still think he is very unproven against any type of decent competetion.

OK, so they have one, but it wasn't up to their normal standards.

Best: peterson, but needs to be healthy unlike last year.
(the kid from texas is going to be good also)
Overrated: Mike Hart. 1 year, only 1 year that he did really well in the big ten. big ten is know for he running game. hart has been hurt and has not accomplished anything

Underrated: Pittman, but i have a feeling that after a few games this year he will be know all over the country even more.

My answer is going be about as Vanilla as the rest but in a 2 reson formatt:

Best: 1a. Peterson 1b. Steve Slaton. We all know about Peterson, but little about Slaton. You dont rush for over 1,100 yards while sitting out the first 3 games and being second on the depth chart to superstud recruit Jason Gwaltney. The kid averaged 136 yards a game after VaTech, had 5 TDs against Louisville and 204 yards & 3 TDs in the Sugar Bowl.

Overrated: Mike Hart or Marshawn Lynch. Hart had one good year and then a very dismal 662 yard sophmore follow up, possibly being injury prone comes into play. I see Hart as another Lydell Ross - tons of potential but cant cash in all the way. Marshawn Lynch had enough hype last year to fill the Rose Bowl but only cranked out 1200 yards. He was expected to be the 2nd best back in the league (being Bush) but didnt come close after suffering from a hand injury.

Underrated: Pittman or Rafael Little from Kentucky. Little went from 265 yards as a freshman to over 1000 yards as a sophmore in a league that boasts a healthy crops of defenders. He broke for over 100 yards 5 times last year, including a 200 yard performance against Vanderbilt, 124 yard performance against Auburn and a 5 yard run average. All of this and no listed fumbles. Tack on his 450 yard reception (long of 65, 10 yd average) performance and this runningback has the makings of something special. If he had a decent line, he could very well have a 2,000 yard season.

Best: Adrian Peterson

Overrated: Mike Hart, Darius Walker, and Jamaal Charles all get votes from me

Underrated: Antonio Pittman by a landslide -- he gets absolutely no respect for running for 1300+ yards in the Big Ten. The way the media looks past him, you'd think he ran for 445 yards last year.

Well -
Best - Peterson
Based on past production in his Freshman year it would be really hard to look past Peterson. He could solidify his position as the best with a productive season when he will, once again, be the first target of opportunity for both the OU offense, and opposing defenses.
Honorable mention Michael Bush, Louisville. I have seen them play games where he has totally lit up the opposition in ways that remind me of his West Coast namesake (and current NO Saint).

Over-rated? It would be so easy to pick Hart. But I honestly think that would be unfair. Instead I'll slot in Jamaal Charles, more so because of all the hype I have heard in recent months from certain visiting contributors.

Under-rated. Hard to disagree with the board sentiment, and I will concur, Pittman deserves more love than he gets from the media.

Before I say anything, I will say picking Peterson as "Best" is reasonable, and picking Hart as overrated is - IMO - also reasonable. But.. I do find the reasoning to be suspicious.

Couldn't we just as easily say,

Best: Hart, but needs to be healthy unlike last year.
Overrated: Peterson. 1 year, only 1 year that he did really well in the Big XII. Big XII is known for the running game. Peterson has been hurt and has not accomplished anything.

????

Of course, Peterson did run for 1100 yards and 14 TDs last year, which blows Hart's numbers away. So, obviously it's not quite "apples to apples" as it were. But, the reasoning is interchangable, depending on the outcome you desire.

Like I say, I agree with the picks - I do believe Peterson can stake an honest claim on Best College RB, and I do think Hart is overrated. And, so I'm absoultely clear, I would NEVER argue that Hart is the best RB in College... although, I could see people arguing Peterson is overrated. I wouldn't do so personally, but I could see people saying it anyway.

Looks like McFadden will stay underrated for a while.

Hogs' McFadden hurts toe in bar fight, likely out vs. Southern Cal

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Arkansas' football season is off to a difficult start -- and the Razorbacks' first game is still a month away.

Darren McFadden, the dynamic running back who was the 2005 SEC Freshman of the Year, had surgery Saturday morning for a dislocated toe -- after a police report says he was involved in a fight outside a Little Rock, Ark., club. The Razorbacks said McFadden is doubtful for the team's season opener against Southern California on Sept. 2.

"We are all disappointed that Darren won't be able to join us for the start of fall camp," coach Houston Nutt said in a statement. "I know that no one is more disappointed with what has happened than Darren. While we are still gathering details about how the injury came about, our first priority is to help him with his recovery."

Players report for preseason camp Thursday, and practice starts Saturday. Arkansas trainer Dean Weber said McFadden will not practice for several weeks.

(Getty Images) </TD><TD width=15> </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>According to a police report, McFadden was involved in a disturbance at 4:20 a.m. Saturday at Palace the Club, a private club in Little Rock. When officers arrived, a fight was taking place in the parking lot while a crowd watched. McFadden told officers he didn't know the person he was fighting with, the report said.
Sgt. James Lesher of the Little Rock Police Department said the car McFadden's stepbrother was driving was stolen while the fight was going on.
"Apparently it was a mess," Lesher said. "It looks like they had a crowd control problem as well during all of this. And of course during the fight, they had left the car running with the keys in it, and somebody jumped in and took off."
Lesher said the car was found later in the morning. He said nobody was arrested, and although the investigation of the stolen car continues, he doesn't expect McFadden to be charged in connection with the fight.

"There probably will not be anything else with that," Lesher said.

The Razorbacks said McFadden dislocated a joint in his left big toe and had surgery in Little Rock to repair the capsule surrounding the joint. A small pin was also inserted into the joint to stabilize it.

McFadden was first-team all-SEC last year after rushing for 1,113 yards and 11 touchdowns. He was the seventh freshman in Southeastern Conference history to run for 1,000 yards.

While the Razorbacks' passing game struggled, McFadden provided a big-play threat on the ground. He scored on 70-yard runs against both Alabama and Georgia.

And he did all that despite a small cartilage tear in his left knee from the preseason. He had arthroscopic surgery shortly after Arkansas' final game.

This year, McFadden was expected to be a major part of new offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn's plans. But if he's out for an extended period of time, the Razorbacks have other running backs they can turn to. Felix Jones rushed for 626 yards last year as a freshman, and Peyton Hillis added 315.
Michael Smith, a 5-foot-7 redshirt freshman, will also compete for carries.

The club where McFadden was found was shut down in December of 2004 when a judge ordered it closed. Two people were killed there in 2004, and police responded to over 30 crimes or other incidents at the club that year.
It was allowed to open again the following January after the owner promised to increase security and provide additional parking.

Over Rated- Steve Slaton WVU - Play someone with a defense then we will see... unfortunatley they don't play anyone with a D next year either. 1b. M. Bush -Lousiville. Ok ok he had 23 something td's but against who???
really? the 204 yards (which broke Tony Dorsett's Sugar Bowl Record) and 3 TDs against Georgia in the Sugar Bowl doesn't count, or what? and then you go and say that Thomas Brown from UGA is underrated, and he only had 78 yards in that same head to head matchup.... *scratches head* okay, then...

anyway:

best: Peterson

over: i dunno, i'd say Hart, but he was injured. the jury is still out in my book.

under: Pittman
