This is it. Who, exactly should be "regulating" the "pet food industry"? Are you suggesting tax-dollars be spent on quality checks for animal food? The same animals that eat their own vomit/poop?

Wouldn't it be more like letting the chickens watch the chicken house? :p

Big business can generally be trusted not to put themselves in a position to lose their sales base and be sued out of business, yes.

1. My name isn't "Buckles"
2. I love pets, just not in the socially acceptable way.
3. No regulation on frickin pet food makes sense.

What consolation would that be when the family pet dies from kidney failure?
I would be heartbroken, then I would be pissed!

The bottom line is always profits.
If a few dogs and cats die a miserable death, it won't kill their sales.
In this case it could be thousands of dogs and cats and a multitude of companies involved because of sub-contracting production.

Yep, and you would probably sue the company. But look at the percentage of pet food over the years that has been a problem and tell me that the same type of freak occurrence wouldn't have very nearly the same likelihood with regulation. Not exactly, but very nearly.

The thing is that nothing exists in a vacuum. If it were simply a matter of add regulation, increase safety, heck yes, that sounds great! But it isn't. The additional controls cost money. So when someone is feeding their cat Science Diet for health reasons like we did, but suddenly has to pay twice as much, will they go to the cheaper brands that aren't as good for the pet? And will more people decide the cost of having a pet is now too great, so fewer are adopted?

Regulation and governmental control is always, always a seesaw. You can't move one end without something happening on the other, so no matter how much you might want one side moved to the extreme, it will throw the other out of whack, and odds are you will ultimately be better off with some level of balance.

I understand where you're comin' from Taos.

Not all businesses exist soley to make a profit though. Most, if not all small businesses are started so the entrepreneur can make a living doing something they love to do. If I were to start my own company, sure making money would be fun, but that's not why I would start it.

Businesses are people.

Profit motivates people to offer services, create products, and make advances to give us all a fantastic array of choices. I'm good with profits.

I think we've hit the "agree to disagree" zone, though. What say ye?

Well, if your small business doesn't make a profit it will go under.
Most small business starters aren't wealthy and can't afford NOT to be profitable.

Consumers must have protections.
Several individuals have little effect on a companies products or profits.
Also some regulation may prevent costly lawsuits.
