Quitting my job question

First response was to talk to your HR rep... now that you know the rules (use it or lose it) that prob. isn't needed.

Notice, Depends on the job (in my world if you give notice, you're fired on the spot... so folks don't bother giving notice... in my wife's world one month notice is considered too short and the relationship with your boss will prob. suffer if you don't give a month or two notice).

If you think you have a good shot at the consulting gig, I'd forget about the vacation and focus on the consulting gig (if your boss is a real jerk about the situation, then go on vacation the last two weeks and screw him)...

Sadly they have to approve vacation so I couldn't just say I'm going on vacation the next 2 weeks. The first 10 days of the month is my busiest time so I highly doubt that they would can me on the spot. From what I've seen most people finish out their 2 weeks and leave.
I already asked for the vacation so I'll have to see what they say. Middle of next week I can tell them I've taken another job and I will be starting after my vacation.

I just put in my notice. Holy shit, that was the hardest thing I've ever done, 10x as hard as asking a girl out the first time. Now I just hope they take my offer to continue doing some of my work.

Did they say anything about the vacation time, or didn't the topic come up yet?

I put in for a week of vacation for next week, which they approved. I don't know if they noticed that I am off next week yet. I lose the other 5 days. Of course I was only in the office for 30-33 hours last week and didn't take any time so I'll chalk that up to unused vacation time. I might try to go golfing again during the day this week since I won't be able to do that at the new job.

Well the shit pretty much hit the fan today in that they realized that tomorrow is my last day. On the bright side it sounds like my boss is going to keep me on as a contractor since nobody wants to take a big block of my clients. I have some work to do around the house and the extra money is needed. I'll just have to see what they offer compared to what I think I'm worth. I'm sure that if the boss talks to my coworkers they will tell him to give me whatever I want so that they don't have to handle it. Now I just have to find a way of doing two jobs at once without anyone getting pissed off at me. Assume that the company makes $100,000 a year off of the clients that I'm keeping. What is it appropriate for me to ask for?
On the negative side the new job alone is going to hurt, if not cut off my BP time at work so I'm not going to be around as much after tomorrow.

Now that part sucks!!! You know your BP time is much more important than any job, family, woman or children

But congrats and I wish you luck on being able to juggle that. The contracting part is especially going to be difficult because you also have to factor in that your time spent on those clients will go down so maybe the amount of money they bring in will go down accordingly.

Just think about how they are going to feel when you start contracting for them and they realize you can do the same job they were paying you for full time in about a quarter of the actual time. :tongue2:

Good Luck!

Are they billing $100,000 a year or is that what the profit is?
In all negotiation start high. Take your annual salary add 33%, divide by 2000 and that is a good hourly rate to start. Hell I would start at double that and negotiate from there. If you are too far off ask them what they think is fair but be prepapred for a counter offer.

If it is a project basis maybe they will pay you by the project and you may be able to crank through them as by your own admission you did not give them 40 hours. A 40 hour project you can actually do in 20 hours would be nice.
