QB1 Will Howard (National Champion, Pittsburgh Steelers)

Ohio State's Will Howard stuffed Penn State in a locker with rivalry quote

When it comes to big-time rivalries, quarterback Will Howard knows what they mean when the Ohio State Buckeyes take the field. The one with Michigan is one of the best not just in the country, but across the planet. Well, what about the one with Penn State?

If you ask Nittany Lions fans, the showdowns with Ohio State brings a different kind of mentality to the field. If you ask Howard, though, he doesn't see the Nittany Lions as a main rival for his Buckeyes? Yup, that's exactly the case and plenty of Penn State supporters aren't too happy about things:

Ohio State national champ Will Howard doesn't see Penn State as a main rival

Tell us how you really feel, Will. Hey, it's hard to argue with what Howard had to say, as the Buckeyes have dominated Penn State and Franklin in recent years. Just how bad have things been for the Nittany Lions of late against OSU?

He was said to have 2024 draft projections of second to sixth rounds.

this is also what i vaguely remember... something between 4th to 6th, hence his choice to come play for ryan day to improve his draft stock up to something perhaps in 3rd to 4th round.

and that's why, thinking back on it, that he went in the 6th after all of that seemed odd.

don't get me wrong... he was an integral part of getting us the natty, but i'm not sure how much it helped him in the end when it came to his nfl prospects.

The one year of cfb salary is surely a good benefit if his NFL career isn't substantial. And I think playing another year of games under Day and Kelly should give him a better chance of having a substantial NFL career. And I hate to say it but getting drafted late by a well-run team like Pittsburgh is probably better than having a shit team take you in an earlier round a year ago.

all good points that i agree with. he certainly didn’t hurt himself by playing at the college level for another year.

i guess i was just stuck on the increasing his draft ranking angle.

Based on his accomplishments at tOSU, I seriously doubt he would’ve been drafted in the first 4 rounds in last years draft. Maybe some optimistic evaluators gave that as their prediction, but I doubt they’d been very confident with it.

Take Quinn’s example, I’d bet people told him all kinds of things from early to late draft prediction. I suspect he was more optimistic than warranted.

I think Howard made a great decision even just from draft stock perspective. There’s no way he would’ve beg drafted higher in last year’s draft.

Will calls it the best decision he ever made

I can see why

1) He experienced being the starting qb on a national championship run
2) He experienced the championship culture at Ohio state and made lifelong friends
3) He learned from great football minds before going to the league
4) He had the opportunity to apply that learning against good FBS defenses before things ramped up to NFL speed

What he gained here wasn’t just his development, but even if that were all he gained; it’s given him a much greater probability of a successful NFL career. Even if it hurt his draft stock, it was worth it career wise. (And you have to believe that NFL teams are complete idiots to think that they value a QB less after he’s spent a year with Day and Kelly)
