Dennis Allen still has plans for Terrelle Pryor

Raiders coach Dennis Allen says the team?s trade for quarterback Matt Flynn does not demonstrate a lack of confidence in Terrelle Pryor.

Allen said after the Flynn trade became official today that Pryor could still win the starting quarterback job in Oakland if he has an impressive offseason. And even if Pryor doesn?t win the starting job, it?s possible that he?ll get regular playing time if the Raiders decide to build a package of plays using the same kind of spread offense that Pryor successfully ran at Ohio State.

?I think we still feel positive about giving Terrelle Pryor an opportunity to compete and specifically having a package of things that he can do really well and giving him an opportunity,? Allen said. ?So I don?t know that there?s a whole lot that?s changed as far as the mindset of what we feel like we can do offensively.?

Allen did not answer directly, however, when asked whether Pryor and Flynn would get an equal opportunity to win the starting job in training camp, and Allen said he hasn?t talked to Pryor about the Flynn trade.

?I have not talked to Terrelle as of this moment. I anticipate getting in contact with Terrelle and visiting with him on the situation,? Allen said. ?I don?t think there?s been a whole lot of change as far as what our plan is from the quarterback?s perspective. We still want to have competition. I think the more competition we can grow with the quarterback position, the better that we?re going to be. I think once we get Matt in here, we get an opportunity to really start to work with him, I think all those things will sort themselves out. I don?t really get into all that at this point in time because I think what happens is the cream is always going to rise to the top. I think that?s what?s going to happen. The great thing for us is we don?t play a game until September. When we start getting into regular-season games, I promise you, we?ll have a plan.?

That plan will probably involve Pryor spending most of his time on the sideline ? but getting a few plays a game taking shotgun snaps.

Pryor takes Flynn acquisition in stride

Whether Carson was going to be here or (not), it doesn?t matter, I have to battle. It doesn?t matter.

?Terrelle Pryor on Raiders trading for Matt Flynn

ALAMEDA -- What, you expected Terrelle Pryor to pout after the Raiders traded away Carson Palmer in the wake of the team acquiring Matt Flynn and guaranteeing him $6.5 million?

After all, such a relatively hefty payday would seemingly signify Oakland's intentions at quarterback, meaning Flynn was the starter and Pryor relegated to being his backup, even if nothing was promised.

"It?s the business of the game," Pryor said Thursday, after a voluntary offseason workout at the team's facility.

"We had a great quarterback leave, a great quarterback left, and we brought in another pretty good quarterback. You have to have good quarterbacks to win in this league. Matt?s great. We have good chemistry already."

Pryor said he and Flynn are already setting up "off-campus" workouts with players.

"Whether we want to throw at Laney (College in downtown Oakland) or do we want to go outside and go over some plays and break the huddle just to get our snap counts down? Switching back and forth. So, it?s a great chemistry."

Still, the acquisition had to feel like a punch in the gut, no? Especially with the $6.5 million guaranteed to Flynn, who has started exactly one more NFL game than Pryor. So how does Pryor compartmentalize it?

"I don?t really," he said. "They were paying Carson what, $14 (million), $13 million? So, it is what it is. Whether Carson was going to be here or (not), it doesn?t matter, I have to battle. It doesn?t matter.

"Like coach says, cream rises to the top, no matter what. No matter what the position, everyone is going to battle. I believe that the best player coming in, that can give this whole team the chance, whether it?s on the defensive line, D-back, receiver, offensive line, whoever gives us the best chance to come out with a victory, which we need, that?s the main focus for everyone. We need to compete. By competing, you bring out the best in everybody."

Tyler Wilson pick puts pressure on Pryor
April, 27, 2013
By Bill Williamson | ESPN.com

When the fourth round began, there was talk the Oakland Raiders could take former USC quarterback Matt Barkley with the third pick in the fourth round. After Oakland traded down, there was talk it could take Syracuse quarterback Ryan Nassib. He was taken two picks before Oakland's pick.

Undeterred, the Raiders continued the quarterback run by taking Arkansas quarterback Tyler Wilson with the No. 112 pick.

Thus, the Raiders were going to get that quarterback.

Terrelle Pryor to be the backup to expected starter Matt Flynn.
This is a fascinating pick.

Oakland has pressing needs throughout the roster. Yet, it took a quarterback fairly early in the draft. In the end, I don?t mind it because if you score a future starting quarterback in the fourth round, it is tremendous value. So in the end, why not take Wilson if you think he can be good?

I do think this says something about the other two quarterbacks on Oakland?s roster.

After Carson Palmer refused to take a pay cut, Oakland shipped him to Arizona and traded for Matt Flynn. They also have Terrelle Pryor.

I think the Wilson pick says much more about Pryor than Flynn. If the Raiders really felt Pryor would soon be ready to push Flynn for a starting job, they wouldn?t have added another young quarterback at a fairly premium pick. Pryor was taken two years ago by the previous regime in the third round of the supplemental draft.

Teams only have so much time to develop young quarterbacks. Trying to get two youngsters the requisite amount of reps on the practice field is difficult. Usually, teams can only develop one potential starting quarterback at a time.

Plus, regimes love their own guy. Wilson is now "the guy" of general manager Reggie McKenzie and coach Dennis Allen; Pryor is the hand-me down who this regime felt needed further competition.

Sure, Pryor can always develop and prove he is the guy, but the presence of Wilson means the Raiders want to see what he can do just as much as Pryor.

the same organization that traded for Matt Flynn and drafted Tyler Wilson in the 4th round...but your initial answer may be correct...the Raiders organization is known for their genius front office...i guess thats why they are in this mess to being with

3rd WR? Get out of here. Pryor doesn't have the quickness or hips to be an NFL receiver. So lets please stop assuming because he's fast and once caught a jump ball TD in college that means he can be a NFL caliber one.

And in the right offense, you stick him on someone's 3rd CB or even a safety and tell him to run in a straight line as fast as he can.....

but all in all, there's a reason why I put a (maybe) next to it, he would need to be developed into the role. What's clear is he won't be a starting NFL QB anytime soon.
