QB/WR Terrelle Pryor ('10 Rose, '11 Sugar MVP)

not true as far as I am concrned he has never been able to pass exceptionally well.
But then again I give him no sympathy because he lost us all the games last season and I dont really consider him a Buckeye.
He didnt graduate.
he did well one season and that was wiped out by him.
IMO he was a selfish player, as he put himself above the team and tOSU.

Actually, Jim Tressel did that by not self reporting in September. TP created the problem, but JT's inaction made it worse. I know we're not supposed to say that and just give JT a standing ovation, but it is what it is.

I don't know who you're responding to when you say not true as far as you're concerned he's never been able to pass exceptionally well, because I'd be surprised if you found anywhere in the 847 pages in this thread where anyone claimed Pryor is an exceptional passer. In short, you've missed (or purposely chosen to ignore) the points of others about his start for the Raiders against the Chargers. But then again, you've made it clear, both in this post and in several of your other posts, that you dislike Pryor and are incapable of forming an objective critique of him. And, for that reason, I'd be surprised if you even watched this past week's Raiders-Chargers game, even though you find it appropriate that you post in Pryor's thread regarding his current passing ability.

Why can't we have it both ways and say - the dude fucked up big time(btw, lost his dream job and comfy AD job post-coaching) but he also did a lot of good for the university, community, and the football program.

I had a buddy of mine tell me how good TP looked for the Raiders.. didn't believe him, so I came here naturally..

I read all the reviews about how good he looks in the NFL from posters here.. had to see it for myself..

I watched the video of TP (all his throws from Week 17) a page or so back..

I just don't see it. He floats a lot of balls.. some ducks in there.. and plenty of balls seemed to be thrown behind recievers..

What makes matters worse.. every good ball he spun, was dropped by his shitty receivers corps.

He is stuck in a bad franchise, with a rotation of coaches and OC's.. after getting screwed with the suspension and having to play catch up last year and this season..

He is not on film, and the NFL hasn't been able to study and break him down yet defensively..

Will he be able to read defenses at the next level?

Lots of things to "wait and see" - despite my rants, I do hope he does well.. after watching the throws.. I just don't see a big time NFL arm.. either you have the golden arm or you don't. You don't coach Nolan Ryan to throw 100mph.. footwork and getting stronger will help, but I don't think he has it.

His arm is still not even close to where it needs to be for and NFL quarterback. But his legs bring so much to the table. He bailed them out of some terrible blocking with some of his scrambling and runs. A senior year would have done a lot for his development but he's got nobody to blame but himself for that.

I really think he'll be the Raiders starting QB next year.

It's never been an arm strength issue. If he can throw it 30 40 yards downfield falling backward and overthrow the man by a yard or two his arm is fine/ it's always been about mechanics and can he fix them.

How long is it going to take. He has had since his freshman year to fix these bad mechanics of his. He was the starter for two and a half years in college. After college he was working with his own QB coach to fix these things. He has had plenty of time to fix his mechanics.

It's all about reps in a practice in a game. When things break down you tend to rever to your old ways of doing things till the new way becomes habit. He may never fix his mechanical flaws lord knows a majority of the QB's who come into the NFL don't but just becuase they aren't fixed yet doesn't mean he never will. He's only in his 2nd year and had very little live action.

Mechanics won't form during live game reps. Tons of reps - the right way..

As a famous coach here in North Columbus used to say on the baseball field: "Practice doesn't make perfect. PERFECT practice makes perfect."

So true.

And one would think, after 3 years at tOSU, 2 years in a professional organzation (where all you do is work out & practice daily) that his mechanics would be there by now. I'm not sayin' he won't develop still, I just think we would have already seen it if he was going to turn the corner.

I do think, in my experience coaching, the more talented the kid was at a younger age, the less he relies on mechanics and more on his god-given ability to overcome obstacles. And the kid who had to take 100 swings a day to hit the ball where he wanted, he will have better mechanics when he is 13, 14, 15 years old than the kid who never had to practice to be good.

TP was a freak. He didn't have to set his feet and keep his elbow high in HS when he was learning the postion. Hell, he didn't really have to in college either - he was a man amoung boys.

Rep to anyone here who happens to know/played for that coach quoted above.

Vince Lombardi said it and Geoff Colvin used it in his book

Practice Doesn't Make Perfect, Perfect Practice Makes Perfect

I've been reading Geoff Colvin's Talent is Overrated: What Really Separates World-Class Performers from Everybody Else. The basic idea is that success is neither a function of genetic uniqueness nor hard-work. It is instead a function of taking the endowments one has, and refining one's craft through deliberate practice. The defining characteristic of the deliberative approach to practice are: (1) designed to specifically improve performance; (2) can be repeated; (3) provides continuous feedback; (4) is demanding mentally; and (5) is hard and pushes us continously beyond our comfort zone. Top performers are detail oriented and never satisfied. My favoirte lines from the book are:
"Excellent performers judge themselves differently from the way other people do. They're more specific, just as they are when they set goals and strategies. ... The best performers judge themselves against a standard that's relevant for what they're trying to achieve. Sometimes they compare their performance with their own personal best; sometimes they compare with the performance of competitors they're facing or expect to face; sometimes they compare with the best known performance by anyone in the field. Any of those make sense; the key, as in all deliberate practice, is to choose a comparison that stretches you just beyond your current limits. ... If you were pushing yourself appropriately and have evaluated yourself rigorously, then you will have identified errors that you make. A critical part of self-evaluation is deciding what caused the errors. Average performers believe their errors were caused by factors outside their control. ... Top performers, by contrast, believe they are responsible for their errors."

How does Terrelle Pryor fit into your plans?:

?He?s obviously somebody that we?ve got to take account of and know that he?s a guy that can create things. ? His athleticism and his play-making ability was something we really need to take into account moving forward.?

Did he show you something in that final game that you hadn?t maybe seen in practice?:

?His presence on the field was what I thought impressed me the most. The game was not too big for him. He had a very good presence, a good demeanor about himself. ? Those are some of the things that you see on gameday that you don?t necessarily see in practice.?

Could Eagles pursue Terrelle Pryor?
January, 16, 2013
By Bill Williamson | ESPN.com

Chip Kelly wanted Terrelle Pryor to be his quarterback once before.

Now that Kelly is entering the NFL and he is bringing his unique offense from the college ranks, could Kelly try to work with Pryor again?

Chris Sprow lists Pryor as a potential target of Kelly as he begins his tenure as the coach of the Philadelphia Eagles.

Kelly?s fast-paced offense relies on a big, fast running quarterback. Pryor fits that bill.

That?s why Kelly heavily recruited Pryor to Oregon. Pryor said he was intrigued, but he ended up staying close to home and he went to Ohio State.

It would be far from a given to think Pryor would be atop Kelly?s wish list. But because of the previous interest and the scheme fit, Sprow is right. Pryor belongs on the list.

Pryor showed some promise in a season-ending loss at San Diego when he started for the injured Carson Palmer. Still, Pryor is considered raw and, at best, he will be Oakland?s backup next season.

Oakland doesn?t have a second- or a fifth-round pick in the April draft. Because Oakland?s brass is likely not totally committed to Pryor, I could see it listening to the Eagles if it was offered a solid draft pick for Pryor because the Raiders have several immediate needs.

Again, I?m not saying Pryor is the perfect answer for Kelly, but there?s enough dot connecting here to think he could be on Kelly?s list moving forward.

Raiders willing to let Pryor compete for starting job
Posted by Darin Gantt on January 23, 2013

With Carson Palmer injured, Raiders quarterback Terrelle Pryor got what appeared to be a throwaway start in the final game of the regular season.

But it might have been a preview of coming attractions.

Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie told Alex Marvez and Jim Miller on Sirius XM NFL Radio that Pryor would be given a chance to compete for the starting job.

?He needs to see if he can take a game over in the preseason, make some plays and carry out a game plan,? McKenzie said. ?Let him compete. That?s what it?s all about. If it looks like he can help us win, at the end of the day, that?s what it?s all about. That?s what we want.?

While Pryor looked raw in his short time on the field last year, there?s no denying he presents a more intriguing option than the rest of the Raiders depth chart.

Palmer is exactly what he is, a good-enough starter who has never won a playoff game. Backup Matt Leinart?s an unrestricted free agent, whom no one would miss.

Pryor at least has potential, as he demonstrated by throwing for two scores and running for another in his one start.

?It was good to see him go in and implement a game plan,? McKenzie said. ?He carried it out, played the game through and showed us what he can do. He definitely flashed some things that we?re going to try and see what we can do with him in the offseason. . . .

?That?s fine to be a great athlete. We?ve got a lot of great athletes who can run. I want them to be great football players. I want them to take their game plan and execute it. Just make plays.?
