Matt Leinart could back up Carson Palmer in Oakland

The Oakland Raiders may be in the market for a Heisman Trophy-winning USC quarterback to back up their starter, another Heisman Trophy-winning USC quarterback.

Matt Leinart, who was cut by the Texans last week, is a likely target for the Raiders as they look for a backup to Carson Palmer, Bill Williamson of ESPN.com reports.

The Raiders aren?t expected to re-sign free agent Kyle Boller, and Jason Campbell has already signed with the Bears, so Oakland needs a backup to Palmer. Terrelle Pryor is on the roster, but he?s more suited to spot duty as a change of pace who can threaten teams with his arm and his feet than he is as a backup who could run the offense if Palmer went down.

Yeah, Pryor, for me, is the most memorable player at Ohio State I've had the chance to watch in my lifetime. He was electric on the field. Very fun to watch. I still miss watching him in scarlett and gray.

I often wonder how the wisconsin game would have went if he didn't get injured during the illinois game. The team was rolling on offense better than any tress team I'd seen up until that injury.

Terrelle Pryor: Raiders want me as QB

Oakland Raiders quarterback Terrelle Pryor signed autographs in Steelers' territory Saturday afternoon.

The former Jeannette High School and Ohio State superstar was at Westmoreland Mall near Greensburg signing photos, jerseys and other memorabilia during a two-hour session. With a wide grin, Pryor shook hands, poised for pictures and talked to hundreds of fans waiting to see him -- all for a fee that started at $30.

Pryor is about to begin his second season in the NFL, and he enters it as a quarterback. He dismissed rumors that the Raiders organization, which selected him Aug. 23 in the third round of the supplemental draft, asked him to switch positions.

"I haven't heard them," Pryor said about the rumors. "That's not even a question. I'm still working to become the best quarterback."

Pryor spent his first season in Oakland watching and learning from the sidelines.

He got on the field for one play, but the Raiders were penalized before the snap and Pryor returned to the sidelines. The game was Oct. 23 against Kansas City.

"I had a whole package for that game," Pryor said. "I was going to make a bunch of throws, but we ended up getting smashed and I was yanked. Who knows where it would have gone? I'm confident I would have been successful during that time. We were down, 21-0, and we didn't run any plays."

Pryor missed the first five games of the season; the NFL honored the NCAA's suspension levied when he was at Ohio State. He also missed much of training camp while waiting for the NFL to make a decision that allowed Pryor to enter the supplemental draft.

He said it was tough not being able to learn with the Raiders during that five-week period. He didn't get paid, and he couldn't have any contact with the coaches.

"The suspension put me way behind," Pryor said. "But the future is bright, and I'm living in the future."

He's a fantastic athlete who certainly had his moments but all things considered I was disappointed in his tenure at Ohio State. He came up VERY short off the field, I don't think he gets that, and I doubt he ever will. :ohwell:

McKenzie says Pryor a "viable" candidate for Raiders' No. 2 QB

Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie said Wednesday Terrelle Pryor is a "viable" possibility to emerge this season as Oakland's No. 2 quarterback.

"Absolutely," McKenzie said without hesitation at the team's headquarters in a pre-draft media conference. "Yep. Hopefully, our quarterback coach and offensive coordinator, the staff, can work him starting (in) next week?s voluntary minicamp. And see if we can get him rolling. It?s going to be a constant evaluation. But they need to find out how good he is and how good he can be."

So for those keeping score at home, Carson Palmer is the unquestioned starter and Pryor is working his way up to No. 2 and those waiting for a veteran to sign on as Palmer's backup, someone like Matt Leinart, perhaps, have to wait longer.

Pryor, selected by the Raiders in the third round of the supplemental draft last August, was on the field for one snap last season, though the play was wiped out when he was called for a false start after he went in motion from the left slot, settled under center and took the snap, against Kansas City. Pryor never saw the field again.

"That?s his goal right there," McKenzie said of Pryor becoming Palmer's primary backup, "and that?s the goal that the coaches are going to try to get him going."

Asked if the Raiders had to find out first if Pryor and his myriad skill set was capable of being a No. 2 quarterback before signing a veteran backup, McKenzie did not flinch.

"Yeah, I think that?s a natural progression, absolutely," McKenzie said. "They need to know what he is, how he can throw the ball, how he picks it up and get him on the field.

"So next week, I think, it?s going to be a great tell-tale sign for the coaching staff. Not just for the quarterback position, but many of those positions."

Where would Pryor fit in this draft?

There are several interesting quarterback prospects available in the draft next week.

Had he not been taken by the Oakland Raiders in the third round of the supplemental draft, Terrelle Pryor would have been one of them. After he became ineligible to play his senior season at Ohio State, Pryor was put in the supplemental pick and he was nabbed by the late Al Davis, who loved his natural ability.

As a result, the Raiders surrendered what would have been the No. 77 pick of this draft. I checked in with Steve Muench of Scouts Inc. to get his view on where Pryor would have fit in this draft class of quarterbacks. Muench said he thinks Pryor would have fit right around the middle of the third round, right in the value area of the pick Oakland used to get him.

Muench said he thinks Pryor likely would have been taken a round or so lower had he not been eligible for the supplemental draft because the year missed could slow his development. Still, Muench said because of Pryor?s immense natural gifts, he?d have a place in this draft.

Muench thinks Pryor would be the eighth best quarterback prospect this April. The top-level quarterbacks are, of course, Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin III and Ryan Tannehill. Muench believes Brandon Weeden, Kirk Cousins, Nick Foles and Brock Osweiler are all solid second-or-third round picks.

He?d slide Pryor in after that group. Muench sees him as a better prospect than the next group of quarterbacks that includes Russell Wilson, Kellen Moore and Ryan Lindley. Pryor has to improve in several areas, including decision making, before he can be considered a starting candidate, Muench says.

The Raiders are expected to sign a backup quarterback and keep Pryor as their third option. But there is no doubt he is still a developmental player who has plenty of value.

Raiders will count on Pryor as Palmer's backup

The 2012 NFL draft hasn?t even begun, and the Raiders already have a member of their draft class pegged to play an important role next season. Terrelle Pryor, a supplemental pick last August who cost the team its third-rounder this year, is the team?s No. 2 quarterback following the first week of OTAs under new head coach Dennis Allen. Although he has never attempted a pass in an NFL game (preseason or regular season), Pryor is the team?s only backup to 32-year-old starter Carson Palmer and could be counted on heavily if Palmer were to be injured.

When asked about Pryor?s development, Allen said he has the same goal for the 22-year-old that he does for everyone else on the roster.

?What I want to see is that every day he gets a little bit better,? Allen said of Pryor. ?That?s what we?re looking for with all of our players. None of us are where we need to be right now.?

We hear that Pryor has improved in the eight months since joining the team but still has a ways to go before being a legit backup for Palmer. Though few quarterbacks in the NFL can rival his speed and athleticism, Pryor is still way behind the norm when it comes to accuracy, pocket presence and reading defenses. Oakland may still opt to pursue a veteran QB, such as Kyle Boller or Matt Leinart, before training camp begins.
