QB/WR Terrelle Pryor ('10 Rose, '11 Sugar MVP)

Terrelle Pryor fumbles chance to be Ohio State legend
BY JON SPENCER ? December 24, 2010

Merry Christmas, Braxton Miller. Terrelle Pryor's heir apparent looks as though he will figure into Ohio State's plans a lot sooner than anyone envisioned thanks to the lump of coal Buckeye fans found under the tree Thursday.

With Pryor and four teammates facing suspension for the first five games of the 2011 season, OSU's No. 1 recruit -- a dual-threat dynamo forged from the same mold as Pryor -- could be starting at quarterback when the Buckeyes travel to Miami in September, just nine months after leading Huber Heights Wayne to a state runner-up finish in the high school playoffs.

My gut feeling is many honked-off OSU fans wish the Braxton Miller era could start as soon as the Jan. 4 Sugar Bowl.

Hearing Pryor sold his 2008 Big Ten championship ring and the gold pants that come with a victory against archrival Michigan isn't going to sit well with anyone who deems such items sacred -- in other words, most of Buckeye Nation.

We're talking one of the nation's most passionate fan bases, backers who opened a vein at the mere speculation of the Ohio State-Michigan game moving from the last game of the regular season when the expanded Big Ten splits into two divisions next season.

The selling of such hallowed team-related personal effects by Pryor, running back Daniel Herron, wide receiver DeVier Posey, offensive lineman Mike Adams and defensive end Solomon Thomas has to hurt those who hold Ohio State near and dear almost as much as the fact they've jeopardized the team's chances of a seventh straight Big Ten title in 2011.

The only way TP can redeem himself is to come back next year, sit out the 5 games, and if he earns his spot back, perform well. If he leaves after this year, he will be known historically as a huge dissapointment.

Huge disappointment depending on perspective, and you are probably correct in a general sense.

I for one think his time at tOSU has been a success in that he has matured significantly over his time here (though there is room for growth).
He's beat scum 3 times and taken us to three BCS bowls, broken records and on pace to smash many.
If he leaves, gets his degree at some point and makes a good living (NFL or otherwise) in which he is able to support his mom and family I'd say he's been pretty successful.
Will he have reached his full tOSU FOOTBALL potential, no, but that is not primary in this life (to my mind or likely his).

being successfull is different than having a legacy at OSU.

Agreed, and his goal of leaving a legacy would not be met if he leaves but he will leave a top 3 QB in tOSU history regardless.

Calling him a huge dissappointment is extreme considering the achievements he and his teamates have accomplished, again 3 BCS bowls, 3 scum wins, Rose Bowl win, 3 big ten championships.

Has he reached full potential, hell no. Has he been a "huge dissappointment", hell no. Quite a bar you set for others.

I still say he is a huge disappointment if he leaves. Bailing on your team due to NCAA rules violations when no one has you as a first day draft pick confirms the selfish nature that he has shown at times throughout his career. He put up numbers but he didn't hold up his end of the bargain as a student athlete. Troy Smith overcame his mistake to cement his legacy at OSU. TP can as well...but he hasn't done it yet. Not even with a win in the Sugar Bowl. IF he won the Sugar Bowl and went pro without this scandal, I would agree with you.

Again that is the bar you set and your opinion. Likely the opinion of many others right or wrong.

I see things differently. I went to tOSU to advance my career, would I have left early to get a great position? yes. would I have gone back to school at some point to finish up? yes. Will Terrelle? Don't know, hopefully but it's his choice.

I agree that the legacy is deminished or vacated based on his mistake. Great things however have been accomplished.

TP should be a man and realize that he has made a mistake and to accept his punishment (although I personally disagree it was his property, I would have never sold them but who am I to tell him to not sell something he his his own man) and come back to the greatest college and greatest football program in the US and play out his senior year and do the best he can. This will restore his legacy and cement his place in Ohio State history.

If you flip a few pages back this is the exact argument I gave.

Many were willing to crown him with another year, more victories, and more accolades. Not so fast my friend. He will always be one of our most memorable and successful players, but in terms of leadership he's not a legend. Guys like Troy Smith who learned from his mistake ($500 handout), or Krenzel's success on field and in the classroom are Buckeye Legends. Can TP turn it around? Absolutely, but he has a lot of work to put in, both in the community as well as a solid presser post-Sugar Bowl regarding the matter at hand.

I do also think that if TP leaves now he will be viewed by Buckeye faithful as another Cris Carter. They both are solid players in their positions, but would be leaving school on a sour note that strikes against the grain.

I hope he's seeking good council from his family and the Buckeye family over these holidays. He is a wonderful talent and I have to believe his heart is in the right place. If he does what I hope he will do, he'll remain a Buckeye that we can all rally behind and help get them through this mess.

If he decides to take the easy way out, play the game, go pro and move on............. I'll wish him the best of luck and say goodbye. I would hope coach Tressel is guiding him towards the former.
