QB Troy Smith (2006 Heisman Trophy Winner)

I don't care much about sportsnation polls because I've seen some pretty dumb ones, but I am very glad to see Troy get a shot to start again in the NFL this weekend. :)

49ers to start Troy Smith at QB

San Francisco 49ers quarterbacks Troy Smith, rear center, and David Carr, front, take part in a practice session Wednesday in Watford, England.

Smith, the 49ers' No. 3 quarterback, got a promotion Wednesday when head coach Mike Singletary named him the starter for Sunday's game against the Broncos at Wembley Stadium in London.

It could be more than a one-game trial for the 2006 Heisman Trophy winner at Ohio State. Alex Smith is expected to miss two to three weeks with a separated left shoulder, an injury he suffered in last week's 23-20 loss to the Carolina Panthers.

Smith, in his fourth NFL season, doesn't have a huge professional resume after a legendary college career. He spent his first three season with the Ravens, who cut him during their final roster cuts before the season. Signed by the Niners on Sept. 6, he has two career starts ? the most recent on Dec. 30, 2007 ? and has thrown 13 regular-season passes in the past two-plus seasons.

Singletary cited Smith's leadership ? hailed, he said, by his former teammates in Baltimore and Ohio State ? but was light on more specifics when asked why Smith leapfrogged Carr on the depth chart.

?I just think right now, as I look at where we are as a football team, as I look at our offense, I just feel that Troy Smith was a good choice for us right now overall,? Singletary said.

Smith already has a few huge supporters on the roster. Wide receiver Ted Ginn, a former teammate of Smith's at Glenville High School in Cleveland and Ohio State, has known Smith since they were 7. Cornerback Nate Clements, who also attended Ohio State, is four years older, but has known Smith since the quarterback was in high school.

?We've been together a long time,? Ginn said. ?For us to go out and continue our journey is great. You don't have a chance very often to play with someone you've been playing with your whole life.?

Said Clements, ?He's always performed. We're very confident in what he can do. I know the man can play.?

He has been inactive in all seven games and ran the scout team while studying the 49ers' playbook.

"I wouldn't say that it's a crash course," Troy Smith said. "Throughout my career, this is what I've done, learned new offenses. I just have to go out and execute the offense."

But how much can he actually run in such a short time? Singletary admits he doesn't know yet, but said Smith knows "enough of the offense to play."

"It's one thing when you're sitting down and looking at different plays, you say, 'Sure, I got it,' then you have to do it fast under pressure and maybe you forget a call here or there," Singletary said. "I do know that however limited it'll be, it will be a situation that we put him in the best situation to win.

I feel a little bad for him as more and more reports come out of San Fran. Not having practiced with anyone but the scout team all season and the Offensive Coordinator saying he hasn't watched him all season and has no idea what he's good at. He's being thrust into a really bad situation and they are just hoping he can make the best out of it. On the bright side if he succeeds when the odds are this bad he proves a lot about him and his ability to be a starting QB in this league.

Good of team as any for him to start against. Denvers defense is not that great.

30th in points allowed.
25th in yards allowed.
30th in rush yards allowed.
10th in pass yards allowed. They are pretty beaten up in the secondary though, so that may help too.

Denver's defense is ridiculously depleted too. They're without Parrish Cox (CB), Darcel McBath (S), Wesley Woodyard (LB) and Robert Ayers (LB). Pretty sure all of them play at least a decent amount, and Cox is a starter who has looked pretty good.

I've been screaming for it since September. Hell yes.

Just go do your thing Troy. Run the offense. Find the key components, Gore, Davis and Crabtree. Then whey they arent looking, burn em with your brother! Ted has to be the happiest guy on the team. lol
