QB Troy Smith (2006 Heisman Trophy Winner)

I just hope that Troy gets his fair amount of chances to succeed.

Starting his first game as a rookie on the road at a tough stadium against a tough defense in the rain is not a great chance to succeed. Especially with all of the drops that the receivers had, and the constant pressure Troy had on him all day.

As long as he gets a fair shot, and gets experience, I believe that he will be a great player.

We were hearing tidbits about Troy's leadership qualities from OSU players before it was clear he was going to be at QB, let alone the starting QB. The stories above make me wonder if he isn't going to simply step into the role as unofficial leader of the team until there really isn't any choice but to move him up the ranks. If your options are all playing around the same level, you want the guy that people are willing to follow.

After watching Troy beat the odds at OSU and when you consider his mentality, I really believe he could be a successful NFL Qb.

I would never doubt this kid ever again! I'm really pulling for him.
Of course that "offensive genius" in Baltimore (Tongue planted firmly in cheek) probably won't give him a real shot.

Smith gets schooled in first start
OSU's Heisman QB could have it worse
By John McGrath
Tacoma News Tribune

His debut as a starting quarterback in the NFL drew mixed reviews - and no promises about next week from his coach - but Troy Smith decided if he couldn't own the role of worldly veteran, the least he could do was talk like one.
"With four quarters underneath my belt," the Baltimore Ravens rookie said Sunday, "I understand now what the NFL is all about."
Ten minutes into the fourth quarter in Seattle, the NFL looked like it was all about another Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback stepping up in class and getting schooled.
Able to generate only one drive inside the Seattle 40-yard line - a hurry-up-before-halftime possession that fizzled when Patrick Kerney pounced on Smith's fumble - Baltimore was on the verge of suffering its first shutout in five years.
Then Smith launched as pretty a pass as has been thrown at Qwest Field all season, a strike down the sideline that wide receiver Derrick Mason caught in stride and turned into an 79-yard touchdown.
Smith didn't realize it, but his first scoring pass since he left Ohio State made him a more productive NFL quarterback than 2001 Heisman winner Eric Crouch, who walked out on the Rams before the conclusion of his first training camp.

I was just checking out the Ravens Fan Forum and they are very eager to shoot down troy in his first start. These guys have no loyalty its surprising they have stuck with the Ravens this season. He should be starting against Pittsburgh Sunday, so I am pretty excited to see what he can do. Hopefully the weather stays up for it.

Rookie, I'm suprised that the Raven fans dis Troy so early. After putting up with Boller for years, I would think they would want to give Troy a shot, specially considering that he has shown some glimpses of ability in his limited opportunities. Playing the Seahawks in Seattle was supposed to be an awfully tough place to start your first game at QB, but it seemed that at least Troy did not embarrass himself (no small feat considering the dearth of talent surrounding him) It also seems that Troy is getting quite a few props from his teamates, no small accomplishment in itself for a rookie. If he gets an opportunity I have no doubt that he will be a solid NFL QB for years to come.

its also been a pleasent surprise to me that the announcers have been very pro troy. namely madden, but the pair doing the seahawks game had positive reviews for him as well.

Smith likely to start against Steelers in finale
Boller slow to recover from concussion two weeks ago

OWINGS MILLS - Rookie quarterback Troy Smith will likely remain under center for the Baltimore Ravens in the season finale against the Pittsburgh Steelers due to Kyle Boller's slow recovery from a mild concussion, according to coach Brian Billick.

Boller suffered a concussion two weeks ago in an overtime loss to the Miami Dolphins and has experienced lingering effects, including headaches and sensitivity to light. The former first-round draft pick is expected to return to practice this week, though.

"The doctors will not put him out there, even in practice, unless he is completely safe and cleared to go," said Billick, who noted that Boller is feeling better. "Not knowing how his progression will be during the week, it's likely that Troy will get another start. We will prepare the game plan with Troy being the starter in mind."

Smith had a solid, albeit unspectacular debut in a 27-6 loss Sunday to the Seattle Seahawks, demonstrating arm strength, poise and mobility while also struggling with ball security as he lost two fumbles and nearly threw a couple of interceptions.

The former Heisman Trophy winner from Ohio State completed 16 of 33 passes for 199 yards and a 77.7 quarterback rating. He delivered a 79-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Derrick Mason late in the fourth quarter when the outcome had already been decided to avoid a shutout.

"He managed the game very well for his first real start," Billick said Monday. "In a very tough circumstance, the weather, the crowd noise, a very multiple defense and he kind of pieced things together well. There wasn't a blatant, 'My God, what did you do there?'

"So, it was pretty good. And now it has to step up in the recognition, the execution. But he handled the game as we thought he would. We talked all week about how he's been in the big arena before, so you had a sense that he wasn't going to be blinded by the headlights, so to speak."
