QB Troy Smith (2006 Heisman Trophy Winner)

It is early days for Troy. He does have to step it up though to make his life easier.

If teams ditched every rookie QB who came in and went below 30% on their first truncated outing late in a preseason game, then you wouldn't have folks like Alex Smith still playing for the 49'ers.

Some samplings from RavensInsider
Ya know what, I knew it. Here we go. Troy Smith threw to Yamon 3 times and Yamon couldnt catch the ball at all.

- He threw the ball away when trying to evade a sack, Boller couldnt do that.

- He read blitzes very nicely

- He scrambled and fought for those extra yards that got him a first down.

- You also have to realize that Troy Smith is not in Ohio State anymore. He doesn't throw to Ginn, Gonzalez, Santonio Holmes, or Pittman anymore. He has Moore, Figurs, Linson, and Willis. He's playing with UDFA's, late round picks, guys fighting to stay on the roster, and a Oline that wasnt as gelled as the one he had at OSU
Yes he did. He had a lot of dropped passes from his WRs (Darling, Moore 2, Figurs 2, Linson), but he moved well around the pocket and showed great poise during pressure. He overthrew some receivers, but he has great awareness and got rid of the ball when there was no play. Troy is just a rookie and he will get better. I see a lot of upside.

Drew Olson did well, but so did Derek Anderson when he played against 4th string defense. Actually, the running game, Marcus Freeman, and OL made Olson look better than he is.

Olson has probably worked his way to the P.S. with his performance, but he is not going to win the 3rd string job over Troy Smith. It has been said many times that the 3rd string spot is not a competition, anyways, so why are folks wasting time trying to make it a competition.
You don't think he played well, but what if those receivers did catch the ball? You'd be singing a different tune. He over threw figurs twice but when he hit figurs on the numbers, he didn't catch it. Moore and Darling were Moore and Darling, nuff said on that. But seriously, Im not used to seeing a rookie Ravens QB move around and have pocket awareness like Troy did. Maybe Im just excited, which I am. We had a great game and our 2nd and 3rd defense looked spectacular. Its going to be very hard for our front office to make cuts after that game
Troy SMith was impressive with his movement and pocket presence. He looked skittish with his passes. He has a gun of an arm. But his accuracy was pretty poor. He needs to calm down and take his time with some of his passes as some of them just got away from him. He should get better with time. I see upside.

He reminds me so much of Jeff Blake.

Olson was pretty good, despite the fumble, and his accuracy is better than Smoth's right now. But he cannot move in the pocket. Olson has better command of the offense and more accurate passes at the moment. But he looks a lot more limited physically. You can tell that he has lots of weaknesses, despite the passes he completed today.
Troy Smith looked fine for being in the league 2 weeks. While he was off target, he showed great pocket awareness, a strong command of the offense, and a strong arm. He will be a star in this league, but it will take a few years.

Olsen looked great also. I'm glad I don't make the final decisions. But for some of you to just say "so and so sucked" without the proper context is lame. If you read the Premium section with Aaron, you know this is not an even competition for the 3rd string job.(That's all I'll say about that)
Olsen looked good against scrubs. Difficult to make any more of a judgement than you would watching him in NFL Europe.
Troy Smith impressed me with his pocket presence and ability to avoid the sack. His accuracy was not that bad, his recievers were. He is light years ahead of where Boller was in his rookie year.
On a depressing note, Boller looked to be the worst of the three. Wish it wasn't the case.

Troy Smith has tools. Olsen does make plays, hard to knock him. Watching Boller continues to be the same frustrating continuim of batted balls, missed recievers and a whole lotta shakin goin' on.

While Smith (three of 11, 34 yards) was harassed most of his time in the game, there is no denying that he looked too pumped up. Aside from two swing passes with good touch, most every other pass was rocketed to his intended receiver, making catches close to impossible.

There were occasions when he moved well in the pocket to find a clear passing lane, bought time and had open men. Yet he would rocket the ball, leading to high passes. His rookie counter part, Kevin Kolb, looked more like the former Heisman Trophy winner than Smith did and Kolb had purple bodies flying all around, from all angles. Smith did have a nice scramble up the middle to pick up a much needed first down, but he rarely showed composure.

Aside from his first attempt to pass, which ended up being a sack and fumble, Drew Olson looked calm, smooth relaxed and in control. Even though he was playing in the fourth quarter of the first preseason game, Olson completed seven of nine passes for 84 yards and a touchdown. Those stats equate to a 142.6 passer rating that bested McNair?s 142.2 rating.

There were times when the pocket was collapsing, with the offense needing a big play to keep a drive alive. And in those times, Olson simply came through. More time is needed to sort out the third quarterback position, as with many other positional battles, but Olson outperformed Smith in this game.

I saw only about half of Troy's plays. He looked good to me in the pocket but I agree with those who say he looked too pumped up. I think he may be trying to justify the Heisman and I hope he will forget it. He looks like he is in awesome shape and we all know he has the tools. I think next time we see him, he will look a lot better.

Making the grade
Rookie quarterback Troy Smith completed just three of 11 passes for 34 yards, and one of his early attempts was nearly picked off against Philadelphia.

Smith, who won the Heisman Trophy last season at Ohio State before being picked in the fifth round by the Ravens, also scrambled for a 13-yard gain.

So what grade would Smith give himself?

"Probably about a C or C-minus," Smith said yesterday. "There were probably some things I could have done better, some things I did OK, but I could always improve."

Smith was happy that the Ravens didn't have any turnovers, but he also knows he could have made better throws. He will get another chance against the Giants, and might have to outperform second-year quarterback Drew Olson to generate much debate about the No. 3 job.

"I can't say it's going to be easier because it's a new obstacle, a new challenge. It's just something to be looking forward to," Smith said about the Giants game.

NOTEBOOK: OLSON HAS ROUGH PRACTICE ~ August 18, 2007

By Aaron Wilson
( [email protected] )

WESTMINSTER -- Drew Olson experienced a humbling NFL reality Friday morning, days removed from what appeared to be a breakthrough relief performance.

First, the Baltimore Ravens' reserve quarterback was intercepted by middle linebacker Ray Lewis, who practically walked into the end zone. On the ensuing snap, Olson was picked off by cornerback Samari Rolle.

A few plays later, Chris McAlister jumped in front of an Olson pass for a third interception.

For the second day in a row, Smith had a pass tipped at the line of scrimmage as defensive tackle Keyonta Marshall got a hand on it and picked it off.

Although Smith delivers his passes with more velocity, Olson tends to have better accuracy. The complication for Olson, an undrafted free agent, is that Smith is signed to a three-year contract that included a $105,000 signing bonus.

"I think I've always been underrated, starting back in college and through the draft," Olson said. "It's just motivating. I know what I am and what I'm capable of doing. As long as I believe in myself and my teammates, I'll be all right."

CAMP NOTES: DAY 15 THE FINALE ~ August 18, 2007
Team to wear black jerseys on Sunday Night
By Tony Lombardi
( [email protected] )

Troy Smith began practice wearing a long sleeve black shirt with the No. 1 on the front and 11 on the back. Smith?s practice jersey and helmet were soaked as part of the rookie hazing. Smith was forced to borrow Steve McNair?s helmet during practice and he wore Derrick Mason?s jersey. Mason did not practice today.

The best throw of the day by Smith took place during 7 on 7 drills. Smith hit Matt Willis (who had a very productive morning) on a post corner that was dropped in perfectly over the defender about 30 yards downfield. Smith was also lauded by coaches after he looked for his primary to the right and then quickly reset his feet to the left and hit Greg Pruitt, Jr. on the dead run circling out of the backfield. Devard Darling made a nice catch in the end zone snagging a low Smith dart at the goal line just above his shoe top.

Troy Smith was taped and tried to hop away but he was flagged down by Suggs. Suggs put the QB on his shoulder and carried him to the gold post where he was taped heavily to the post. The vets brought Prescott Burgess and Matt Willis to the post as well and taped them all together. Terrell Suggs then assuming the role of a priest/exorcist began chanting, ?Come out Ohio State. Come out University of Michigan. Come out UCLA.? as he doused the three with Gatorade as though he was distributing holy water. Willis took the hazing quietly as Suggs asked, ?You alright pretty boy??

STUCK ON YOU: Like they?ve done for years, the players closed camp by hazing the rookies. Quarterback Troy Smith, linebacker Prescott Burgess and receivers Yamon Figurs and Matt Willis got thrown into tubs filled with ice and then collectively got taped to the goalpost, where they got doused with Gatorade and baby powder.

When Smith was lying in the tub with his arms taped to his side, linebacker Ray Lewis jokingly asked the Heisman Trophy winner to strike the ?Heisman pose.?
