QB Troy Smith (2006 Heisman Trophy Winner)

Wasn't there a similar story a week or so ago where Tressel called him out for being late too?
I think this refers to the same story. Tressel told the audience that Troy's nickname was "I'm on my way," though Troy allegedly went to a Cav's game instead of attending the banquet.

yeah, when i was up in cleveland for thanksgiving.. my uncle and grandpa were talking about this.. saying Ginn & Tress were making all kinds of excuses for him and he was seen at the cavs game that night.

It makes me wonder about a couple of things but oh well

While it probably wasn't the best thing for troy to do... I could care less? He can't be everywhere, and he's been a model student/athlete this year he deserves some time where he can just hang out with some friends instead of attending another event where they just talk about how great he's been this year for us. Plus he'll more than make up for it when he has to attend numerous events starting in December..

Forgetting his roots?
Buckeyes quarterback Troy Smith was a conspicuous no-show at last week's OSU Alumni Club of Greater Cleveland $100-a-plate dinner. He was supposed to receive the club's Lou Groza Award for best player from Northeast Ohio.
Please note that I wrote supposed. Anyone who knows Smith's story can appreciate how he has evolved as a football player, but more importantly as a man.
If he had some sort of family emergency to contend with, his absence would be understandable. To date, no explanation has been given. It's a long season. The Michigan game was probably emotionally and physically draining. However, you do not blow off your college's local chapter of the alumni club in your hometown right after the biggest game of the year.
If he's lucky and doesn't allow collegiate success to go to his head -- a la another former OSU athlete currently sitting in a prison cell -- Smith will have a decade or so to act like some of the egomaniacal pro athletes out there. Until Jan. 9, he needs to keep it all in check, and he owes about 600 people an apology.

Someone get this guy a tissue.

Smith one of five Walter Camp Award finalists

ESPN.com

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Ohio State quarterback Troy Smith is the clear-cut favorite to win the Heisman Trophy. He figures to collect additional hardware before then.
Smith on Wednesday was named one of five finalists for the Walter Camp Player of the Year Award.
Arkansas running back Darren McFadden, Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn, West Virginia running back Steve Slaton and Hawaii quarterback Colt Brennan were also were named finalists Wednesday.
The winner will be announced Dec. 7 and receive the trophy at the Walter Camp Football Foundation's annual awards banquet Jan. 13.
The 2006 Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year and leader of the top-ranked Buckeyes, Smith threw for 2,507 yards with 30 touchdowns and just five interceptions. His most recent effort, a 316-yard, four TD performance against rival Michigan, clinched Ohio State's spot in the BCS national title game Jan. 8.
McFadden has had a breakout season in leading the Razorbacks to the Southeastern Conference West Division title. A sophomore, McFadden ran for 1,485 yards and 14 TDs and had seven 100-yard games.
A senior, Quinn was a finalist last year and has led the Fighting Irish to a 10-2 record and a shot at an at-large berth into a BCS bowl game. This season, Quinn threw for 3,278 yards and 35 TDs with five interceptions.
Slaton finished second in the country in rushing at 147.36 yards per game and racked up 1,621 yards and 14 TDs this season for the Mountaineers. A sophomore, Slaton rushed for at least 100 yards nine times and has 31 rushing touchdowns in his last 18 games.
A junior flourishing in coach June Jones' pass-happy offense, Brennan has thrown for 4,589 yards and a national-best 51 TDs this season for the 10-2 Warriors. Averaging 382.4 yards passing per game, Brennan threw for five or more TDs in a game seven times this season.

Fun stat for the day

IMHO, there is one statistic that is not considered in passer efficiency rating that gives an indication of the magnitude of the mistakes a qb has made.

If every interception a QB throws is close to one of his receivers, there is a good chance that the opponent is tackled immediately every time. Conversely, egregious WTF mistakes often get returned for 6 points, or at least for a few dozen yards.

I'm sure you see where I'm going: INT return yards...

There are two teams that have given up ZERO INT return yards this year.

One of those teams is Air Force. They attempted 135 passes. All year.

The other team is Ohio State.

That's right. None of Troy's interceptions was returned for a single yard. He's the only QB in the nation with over 127 attempts that can say that.

FWIW: Brady Quinn's 5 interceptions were returned for 107 yards and 2 touchdowns.

I like the concept of interception return yards as a stat, because it will typically offset the one area where a QB might be unfairly hammered, which is throwing the hail mary at the end of a half or game.

Counting hail mary INTs isn't a fair reflection on QB rating (not that Troy puts the team in a position to have to resort to chucking the ball 65 yards on a prayer to score points, but I digress).

Congrats to Troy on being named to the American Football Coaches Association First Team, All America Team (as reported by OZone). Quinn Pitcock is a First Teamer as well.

:osu:

EDIT:

Oooops, guess I missed the "All-American Team" thread. Oh Well, Congrats to them anyway!
