Ex-OSU quarterback needs no resume for state post
Kasich appoints Stanley Jackson to state school-board opening

Wednesday June 20, 2012
A bid by former OSU quarterback Stanley Jackson, left, for an open elected seat on the state Board of Education got him noticed by Gov. John Kasich, a spokesman for the governor said.
Gov. John Kasich didn?t get a look at former Ohio State quarterback Stanley Jackson?s playbook before he appointed him to the state Board of Education.
The Kasich administration could not provide a resume yesterday for Jackson, whom it named late Monday afternoon to serve the final six months of an at-large term on the 19-member panel.
Jackson, 37, a registered Republican from Marion, is to replace Dennis Reardon, an appointee of former Gov. Ted Strickland.
Kasich spokesman Rob Nichols said Jackson, known as an Ohio State quarterback in the mid-1990s, did not bring a resume when he met with Kasich?s staff about the appointment.
For background, Nichols provided The Dispatch with a bio of Jackson from a South-Western City Schools Educational Foundation website. It said that Jackson is ?the founder of Masters Preparatory Academy Charter School ... for African American males.?
Nichols said Jackson was out of town and will supply a resume to the administration before it sends his appointment to the Ohio Senate for approval.

Former-quarterback appointee to quit charter-school effort
Move necessary to be on education panel
By Joe Vardon
The Columbus Dispatch Saturday June 23, 2012
Stanley Jackson will resign from the charter school he founded before it ever opens so he can qualify for an appointment to the Ohio Board of Education, a spokesman for Gov. John Kasich said yesterday.
Jackson, 37, the former Ohio State quarterback whom Kasich appointed to the board on Monday, said during an interview with a radio station yesterday that his charter school was ?in place? to open in the fall of 2013.
Earlier this week, the state Department of Education said Jackson?s Masters Preparatory Academy does not yet exist, nor is it on a list of proposed schools to open this fall.Department officials did not return messages seeking comment yesterday.
Records show that Jackson filed articles of incorporation for a nonprofit called Masters Preparatory Academy in 2011, and he?s listed as the board president.
State law prohibits a member of the state education board from holding ?any other public position of trust or profit or be an employee or officer of any public or private elementary or secondary school.?
?When he returns to town, he will resign his position and affiliation with the school, which will happen before he becomes an official member of the school board,? said Rob Nichols, Kasich?s spokesman.

MARION - Former Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback and Marion resident Stanley Jackson said this week he believes he has the credentials to serve on the Ohio Board of Education.
Gov. John Kasich appointed Jackson, 37, to the board for the remainder of the post vacated by Dennis Reardon, who was appointed by Gov. Ted Strickland. Jackson, whose nomination must be approved by the Ohio Senate, will be appointed to the at-large seat through Dec. 31, but said he already had plans to run for an elected seat.
He resigned Monday from the board of Masters Preparatory Academy, a charter school for black males he and partners have worked on for two years.
Media outlets have reported on criticism regarding his credentials because he did not graduate from college. Jackson said he believes his work with youth serves as his qualification.
"Instead of being an armchair quarterback, it was time to get involved," he said. "I just want to be part of the solution."
Background
Jackson played football for the Buckeyes and later as part of the Canadian Football League. He came to Marion as part of the Continental Indoor Football League's Marion Mayhem team from 2007 through 2009 and became part-owner of the team in 2009.
He lives in Marion with his wife Ronita, former diversity coordinator for Marion Technical College, and four children, Stanley Jr., Ronald, Tre Major and Jasmyn.
