A bid by former OSU quarterback Stanley Jackson, left, for an open elected seat on the state Board of Education got him noticed by Gov. John Kasich, a spokesman for the governor said.

Gov. John Kasich didn?t get a look at former Ohio State quarterback Stanley Jackson?s playbook before he appointed him to the state Board of Education.

The Kasich administration could not provide a resume yesterday for Jackson, whom it named late Monday afternoon to serve the final six months of an at-large term on the 19-member panel.

Jackson, 37, a registered Republican from Marion, is to replace Dennis Reardon, an appointee of former Gov. Ted Strickland.

Kasich spokesman Rob Nichols said Jackson, known as an Ohio State quarterback in the mid-1990s, did not bring a resume when he met with Kasich?s staff about the appointment.

For background, Nichols provided The Dispatch with a bio of Jackson from a South-Western City Schools Educational Foundation website. It said that Jackson is ?the founder of Masters Preparatory Academy Charter School ... for African American males.?

Nichols said Jackson was out of town and will supply a resume to the administration before it sends his appointment to the Ohio Senate for approval.

Former-quarterback appointee to quit charter-school effort
Move necessary to be on education panel
By Joe Vardon
The Columbus Dispatch Saturday June 23, 2012

Stanley Jackson will resign from the charter school he founded before it ever opens so he can qualify for an appointment to the Ohio Board of Education, a spokesman for Gov. John Kasich said yesterday.

Jackson, 37, the former Ohio State quarterback whom Kasich appointed to the board on Monday, said during an interview with a radio station yesterday that his charter school was ?in place? to open in the fall of 2013.

Earlier this week, the state Department of Education said Jackson?s Masters Preparatory Academy does not yet exist, nor is it on a list of proposed schools to open this fall.Department officials did not return messages seeking comment yesterday.

Records show that Jackson filed articles of incorporation for a nonprofit called Masters Preparatory Academy in 2011, and he?s listed as the board president.

State law prohibits a member of the state education board from holding ?any other public position of trust or profit or be an employee or officer of any public or private elementary or secondary school.?

?When he returns to town, he will resign his position and affiliation with the school, which will happen before he becomes an official member of the school board,? said Rob Nichols, Kasich?s spokesman.

MARION - Former Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback and Marion resident Stanley Jackson said this week he believes he has the credentials to serve on the Ohio Board of Education.

Gov. John Kasich appointed Jackson, 37, to the board for the remainder of the post vacated by Dennis Reardon, who was appointed by Gov. Ted Strickland. Jackson, whose nomination must be approved by the Ohio Senate, will be appointed to the at-large seat through Dec. 31, but said he already had plans to run for an elected seat.

He resigned Monday from the board of Masters Preparatory Academy, a charter school for black males he and partners have worked on for two years.

Media outlets have reported on criticism regarding his credentials because he did not graduate from college. Jackson said he believes his work with youth serves as his qualification.

"Instead of being an armchair quarterback, it was time to get involved," he said. "I just want to be part of the solution."
Background

Jackson played football for the Buckeyes and later as part of the Canadian Football League. He came to Marion as part of the Continental Indoor Football League's Marion Mayhem team from 2007 through 2009 and became part-owner of the team in 2009.

He lives in Marion with his wife Ronita, former diversity coordinator for Marion Technical College, and four children, Stanley Jr., Ronald, Tre Major and Jasmyn.

Charges dismissed against Paterson firefighter in case of missing Ohio State Rose Bowl ring

Former Paterson Catholic football star Stanley Jackson says he didn’t know the ring he won for being on Ohio State's 1996 Big Ten Championship team that won the Rose Bowl was missing until he received a phone call several years ago from a man in Alaska offering to sell it back to him.

This is why I don't store things at my mom's house. Bless her soul, but she's a Luddite who doesn't believe in the beauty of a three-cat security system. My cats would probably have subdued the blaze before it needed TLC from firefighters.

But hypothetically, if a firefighter tried to pinch my 1997 Rose Bowl ring, my cats would give him a choice: A left hand or a right arm—he wouldn't leave with both.

Stanley Jackson was with Ohio State from 1994 to 1997 and was a part of the 1996 squad that won the 1997 Rose Bowl while they were utilizing two quarterbacks (Joe Germaine).

Jackson played two seasons with the Montreal Alouettes (1999-2000) and two seasons with the Toronto Argonauts (2001-2002). Jackson missed 2003 due to injury and signed with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 2004.

A Big Ten champion and Rose Bowl winner, Jackson accomplished much as a quarterback over four years at Ohio State. He also spent those years meeting and developing relationships with several other Buckeyes, such as Winfield Garnett, Reggie Germany, Ashanti Webb and Paris Long.

Now the head coach of Westerville North – a high school located 25 minutes northeast of Ohio State's campus and downtown Columbus – Jackson called on those Buckeyes to fill his staff for the Warriors football program, with Garnett, Germany and Webb as assistants and Long as a strength coach and physical trainer. He also added Chris "Beanie" Wells to the group and round out the bunch.
