REX KERN
Considered one of the most prolific quarterbacks in Ohio State history as well as a quintessential performer in the classroom, Kern was the true definition of a scholar-athlete during his Buckeye career.

The first All-America (1969) quarterback to play for legendary coach Woody Hayes, Kern led OSU to three consecutive Big Ten titles and the 1968 National Championship. During his junior campaign, he set a school record for total offense in a single season (1,585) and finished third in the Heisman Trophy voting. He was also named Rose Bowl MVP. In three years as a starter, "Ramblin' Rex" completed 188 of 364 passes for 2,444 yards and 19 touchdowns.

A recipient of the NFF's National Scholar-Athlete Award, Kern earned All-Big Ten Academic Team accolades in 1970 and an NCAA Post Graduate Scholarship the following year. After receiving his bachelor's degree, the Lancaster, Ohio, native twice returned to his alma mater to further his education, ultimately earning his Ph.D. in Health, Physical Education and recreation.

Kern was drafted by the Baltimore Colts in the 1971 and played four seasons in the NFL, receiving numerous humanitarian awards from the league. He established the Anne and Woody Hayes Endowment for the prevention of child abuse at Columbus Children's Hospital in 2001 and resides in Camarillo, Calif.

Ohio State QB Kern put up some hall-of-fame numbers

By Kyle Nagel
Dayton Daily News

Thursday, May 10, 2007
Rex Kern had a 27-2 record as Ohio State's starting quarterback from 1968-70, numbers that to many place him atop the list of Buckeyes QBs. On Wednesday, Kern was elected along with 11 other players ? including Doug Flutie, Ahmad Rashad, and former Bengals Reggie Williams and Wilson Whitley ? to the College Football Hall of Fame.
Kern led the Buckeyes to the 1968 national title as a sophomore, but losses to Michigan in 1969 and Stanford in the 1971 Rose Bowl kept those three OSU teams ? considered some of the greatest in the school's history ? from dynasty status.

Plain Dealer Reporter
As a sophomore at Berea High School in 1968, Jim Tressel clipped out a magazine photo of Rex Kern and traced it on the cover of a notebook. When Tressel walked the halls, Ohio State's quarterback went with him.
Wednesday, Kern received a more lasting honor with his election to the College Football Hall of Fame.

OSU football legend bound for hall of fame
Kern played for Lancaster Gales
By JOE ARNOLD

LANCASTER - One of Rex Kern's most memorable receptions took five years and a cross-country postal route to complete, but like any quarterback - active or retired -he'll take what he can get.
Kern, an Ohio State legend and Lancaster native, unwrapped a box at his California home last week and inside found his ticket into the College Football Hall of Fame - a commemorative football inscribed with the word "Congratulations." Kern's upcoming induction was made official Tuesday, ending a five-year stretch as an also-ran.

Rex Kern was a legend when I was growing up in Lancaster (and I'm only 24)...there were legends of his accomplishments that basically made him seem like Hercules

It's nice to see him get this honor, he definitely deserved it

tape of the Rose Bowl?

If anyone has a tape of the 1-1-69 Rose Bowl, you will understand what Kern was all about. Looking at his passing stats, especially TD/interception ratios, he's not that impressive.

I watched the 69 rose Bowl (I was 13) and it was hilarious --- the Ohio State fans knew that neither the cameramen nor the announcers (Curt Gowdy) were prepared for the ball handling. And so, play after play, the camera and the announcers followed the wrong guy into the line.

There was a lot of "Otis stopped for a gain of one --- no holy cow wait a minute! Kern still has the ball!! now he's pitching to the halfback!!!"

Of course, in that game, OJ Simpson had an 80-yd TD in the first half, but only gained something like 35 yards the entire second half.

Funny that as a passer he was mediocre, but still he is remembered as one of the greatest OSU QBs of all time.

(In fact many of you might not remember but Woody used to put in Don Maciejowski at QB when we needed some big downfield plays.)

Great honor for a great guy.

Go Bucks!
