QB Luke Fahey (Official Thread)

I can’t agree with a few things here.

If you build a 4 man QB roster your starter can be portal or recruit- whatever but the other three are going to have to be a mix.

You can only get one transfer to come to you that’s any good/experienced. No one any good is coming to compete let alone sit.

Point being you better be able to identify and develop HS talent.

The other thing I’ll just say is that if this year is supposed to be proof of Cignetti’s QB picking chops then I’ll just say I have doubts. This years schmo is nothing special and shows the fragility of only having one path to win (get a good QB in the portal).

One trend that may emerge is the QB attrition and if so you better be able to identify some HS talent because, again, no one is going to have a good, veteran back up. Not in college.

You are going to have a talented unproven guy or a guy who’s been proven to not be that talented.

I don’t see anyway around that as CFB evolves.
Quick, name a quality back up QB in the NFL.

From what I’m hearing;

Gets ball out insanely quick….downside is plays don’t always develop. Upside is he doesn’t take many sacks or get very close to it. He’s pretty freakish in ability to avoid sacks.

Uses legs when needed but doesn’t rely on them….hes more mobile than Sayin but also tries to throw rather than scramble.

Big arm……better deep ball than Sayin but overthrows at times where Sayin under throws. Coaches want receivers to have a chance to make a play on ball….Fahey just tends to out throw receivers at times (I don’t really mind this IMO).

Fahey is wise beyond his years as a Freshman but playbook will be limited…..lotta new installs going into playbook to play to his strengths.

“A Unique Obsession with the Quarterback Position”: Why Luke Fahey’s Longtime Coach Believes He’s Ohio State’s Next Star

164904_h.JPG

Ryan Porter knew Luke Fahey was different from the first time he worked with the future Ohio State quarterback.

Porter didn’t know who Fahey was when Fahey showed up at one of Porter’s quarterback training sessions for the first time. But it didn’t take long for Fahey, an eighth-grader at the time, to capture Porter’s attention.

“We were doing a training session one of the weekends with a couple other quarterbacks that were nationally known,” Porter recalled. “There would be a national guy get up and just rip a dig route, and then he'd be next in line and do the same thing. And I just kept looking back like, ‘Who is this kid?’ It was crazy. It caught me off-guard, caught me by surprise. And he just, every time he showed up, kept doing it again and again and again.”

Porter, who’s coached more than a dozen Division I quarterbacks including 2023 Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels and current Notre Dame star CJ Carr, has been Fahey’s personal quarterback coach ever since. And he believes Fahey has the potential to be as good as any quarterback he’s ever coached.

“Luke's at the top of the mountain, with the kids that I have, as far as skill set,” Porter said of Fahey. “I think Luke's going to play on Sundays. And I don't say this in an arrogant way, but whether this is the start of the future or he's just keeping the throne warm for Julian when he comes back, Luke's going to be your next guy at Ohio State, and he's going to have a chance to play on Sundays. I think he will play for a long time, as long as he stays healthy and all those types of things.”

Fahey is the guy on Saturday….upside is offense doesn’t change much. Downside is, USC knows this kid inside and out from his youth days in Cali.

They know what he’s capable of. I don’t think game preparation for USC changes AT ALL for Fahey. Fahey prob scrambles a bit more than Sayin, and likely has less patience for a play to develop…..hard to articulate this…..sometimes I’ve been pissed with Sayin for holding ball too long this year….well, he’s giving max time to a late breaking route that could come open. Fahey isn’t waiting that long….he plays on time and if it isn’t there the ball is thrown away or he’s out with his legs. I don’t want to overstate this…..but it sounds like the kid is just immune to sacks….he gets yelled at for not waiting a beat longer at times…..just his nature to hit 3rd or 5th step as drawn, and it’s out of his hand or it’s a throw away or obvious escape route with legs.

I want to be clear…kid is a true freshman and will have some growing mistakes….I’d also say, I don’t think Sayin has been very good this year. Too many sacks, too many turnovers, too many underthrown balls……I’m excited to see what Fahey can provide.

Again, all of this from someone who really wants to see some St Clair bc he’s a freak athlete.
