QB Luke Fahey (Official Thread)

For those who do not know much about Luke, he was recruited and offered a scholarship by Stanford, Oregon, Indiana and Ohio State. Stanford shows that he has the smarts based upon their academic standards. Last year, Indiana's QB won the Heisman. Oregon is an elite football program.
We got a good one guys and gals.

Yeah, the whole "Only three teams seriously recruited him!" crticism falls apart when Ryan Day, Curt Cignetti and Andrew Luck are the ones doing the recruiting.

What HS QB‘s of note has Cignetti or Luck recruited?
gone are the days of needing to identify quality quarterbacks in high school. Many schools seem to not even be trying for the most part.

Think the actual question is whether or not Andrew and Curt have a sharp eye for quarterback talent. I would hope so, particularly at third tier football programs or less when it comes to recruiting. And that includes right now as defending champs nearly guaranteed to make the playoffs again.

I can’t agree with a few things here.

If you build a 4 man QB roster your starter can be portal or recruit- whatever but the other three are going to have to be a mix.

You can only get one transfer to come to you that’s any good/experienced. No one any good is coming to compete let alone sit.

Point being you better be able to identify and develop HS talent.

The other thing I’ll just say is that if this year is supposed to be proof of Cignetti’s QB picking chops then I’ll just say I have doubts. This years schmo is nothing special and shows the fragility of only having one path to win (get a good QB in the portal).

One trend that may emerge is the QB attrition and if so you better be able to identify some HS talent because, again, no one is going to have a good, veteran back up. Not in college.

You are going to have a talented unproven guy or a guy who’s been proven to not be that talented.

I don’t see anyway around that as CFB evolves.

I greatly prefer the combination of great high School recruiting, great recruiting prowess, and effective portal sniping to fix your mistakes.

Indiana and Stanford don't have access to two of those three for the most part.

And the trend I was referring to is by schools that pay unreasonable sums of money as a cheat code to sign proven commodities, which leads to other issues.

I would submit that we're both right and that you don't need to recruit effectively in high school but the cost will be severe both for your pocketbook and your locker room.

And you are proper fucked if that transfer starts gets hurt.

I mean wondering out loud- how do teams that go that route build any depth?

The other advantage to recruiting H.S. QBs is that if you can get the rare H.S. QB who is really advanced mentally from throwing a ton in a complex (for high school) system, has elite mental and precision ball delivery skills, and adequate physical skills (doesn’t throw ducks and can and will run well enough to have to be accounted for), you can trot him out for 3-4 years in you system and let him be a true leader for sustained success. It can’t be your only strategy, but when it hits, it can be a jackpot hit.

You're saying the quiet part out loud, you just don't know it. Ohio State has no use for 3rd tier school sleepers. Furthermore, Stanford's QB's are pure garbage and IU's QB's are 5th year transfers. Sorry, but these two mean nothing in this context. I'm just hoping this guy is the next Stetson Bennett. That's probably about the best sleeper ceiling you can get.

Tanner McKee and Dalton Mills are something other than garbage.

And there's no actual sample size on Curt Cignetti. He's been part of the b1g a few months longer than Julian Sayin.

He secured the #10 QB, 69th overall high school recruit last spring, but he's still a few years from enrolling.

They need a chain mover and a distributor, who stays alive and takes care of the football. The alive part gives me the most pause given that he's my size

Georgia has a very poor man's Stetson Bennett right now, and could possibly win their third title with him, once again largely because other teams are injured. Meanwhile their #1 overall pick level talents do not get close to a Natty
