College football analyst Kirk Herbstreit spoke briefly with SSNN via phone from his home Monday morning, hours after the former Ohio State quarterback was notified he has been nominated for an ESPY award given to the ?Sexiest Employee? at ESPN. The winner will be announced July 20 at a ceremony in Hollywood, Calif. . . .

Kirk Herbstreit has seen his share of anti-Big Ten propaganda.
The ESPN college football analyst and former Ohio State quarterback is used to showing up on set and having verbal barbs aimed his way. But the past couple of seasons, in which the Big Ten has become the butt of jokes nationally, the good-natured overtones are gone.

"I've never seen it with such animosity," Herbstreit said on Thursday during the Big Ten's annual Media Days and Kickoff Luncheon held at the Hyatt Regency. "It used to be a fun debate. Now, it's like … legitimate hatred."

"It may not be fair, but it's reality," Herbstreit said. "It's where we are. I haven't seen the Big Ten mocked as much as it's being mocked right now, in a way where it's a laughingstock. It's funny to say 'disappointment' when you go to back-to-back championship games. It's crazy to have to apologize for being 12-0 and going to a national title game, but that's where we are."

well maybe if some big 10 alums in the media (lookin at you herbie) would take a stand more often it wouldnt be so 1 sided, IMO.

and yes i know it doesnt matter what most of these people say but it does turn people like myself away from their programming. I listened to sports radio every day from about 96 until the day of the champ game vs lsu. i havent listened since and it has been rather pleasant.

Herbie is still licking his wounds from the Florida game. He very vocally championed Michigan's cause for a NC berth, and has been getting shat upon ever since. The Big Ten didn't help him out any last year either. How many teams in the Big Ten lost to a 1AA school, or to Duke? Illinois not showing up in the Rose Bowl and our back to back double digit losses in NC games haven't done any of the Big Ten media guys any favors.

The rest of the Big Ten has to win their OOC games this year, and we can't lay any eggs against YSU, OU, or Troy...otherwise it will be more of the same as far as Big Ten bashing goes.

The Big Ten was never known for flashy football and flashy football is what makes TV broadcasts exciting. So, it was not likely that the media would love our guys coming to town and shutting down one talked-up flashy offense after another in a low scoring game.

Now, that we have hit a down cycle, there's a lot of talk about just how weak we are.

Turning this around is not going to be a one-year thing. We need the entire conference to show up for every OOC game this year. No more Appalachian State or Duke disasters. We need Iowa to silence Iowa State. We need Ohio State to beat USC or lose in a nailbiter. If we get to a NC game, we need to win convincingly.

If all that comes together. Then, we need next year to be better yet. That, and only that, will turn this around.

I couldn't agree more. A great year in 2008 by the entire conference is just the first step in turning this around, because it took more than one season to dig the hole we're in.

After 2006, when Michigan and OSU both lost their BCS bowl games in spectacular fashion, was the first time that Kirk used the term "laughing stock" to describe the conference. He sounded the warning then that the conference had to have a good showing out-of-conference to undo the damage. Then we had an all-timer of a bad year in non-conference games.

Those who say the conference doesn't matter; I used to believe that too. But in a sport where the votes of humans determine who plays in the BCS-CG, and where the opinions those humans hold about your conference affect their vote; it is imperative that your conference rehabilitate itself when it is in the condition the Big Ten now finds itself.

As Steve stated above, the conference must not allow games against weak sisters to be close. In addition, Big Ten teams must make at least a good showing in the following games:

  • Illinois - Missouri: The Illini helped to dig the hole in Pasadena. Here's your shovel, Zook. Help dig us out.
  • Indiana - C. Mich: Central is not a weak sister (to Indi anyway)
  • Iowa - Iowa St: Ferentz MUST break through against the Sucklones
  • MSU @ Cal: HUGE
  • Penn St - Oregon St: The Beavers @ Beaver Stadium - No puns please
  • Purdue - Oregon: The Big 10 - Pac 10 challenge continues
  • Wisconsin - Fresno St: We NEED the stinkin' Badgers to be undefeated when we spank their stinkin' Behinds
  • TSUN - Utah: Like it or not, it's better for us if TSUN wins this one. Having said that, a loss for the Wolverines here would still make me smile. I can't deny it.
Obviously all of this is academic if we don't take care of our own business.

Don't think Herbie will fail to mention it if the :bigten: manages to go 3-1 against USC, Cal, Oregon and Oregon State. He will defend the conference if it is defensible.

I live in an area with plenty of Fresno St grads. I'm getting flack about the fact Fresno St beat Georgia for the baseball crown (we beat the SEC, why can't the mighty OSU?). Here's hoping that PJ Hill goes for 200 against the 'Dogs! And the rest of DBB's requests also.....

I'm pretty sure that Tress won't unleash the whole offense against Youngstown State and OU before getting to USC, but doggone it, OSU should crush these teams with the 2's and 3's! Didn't we beat a MAC team last year by not covering the spread, and go DOWN in the polls? I know it's not Tress's personality to run it up, and I agree, but get there quickly and convincingly, and substitute quickly. Maybe throw Pryor in there quickly, and give USC something to prepare for?

Other than following a loss, the only time tOSU's ranking dropped in the AP poll last year was after the opening game, when the ranking went from 11 from 12 after the win over Youngstown St.

OSU also had a pretty good streak of covering the spread (in their wins). Might have been last year that OSU didn't cover the spread in a win for the first time in a while.

Same here, I haven't watched ESPN or anything like that since I turned off the game with 0:00 left and I don't regret it.
