I wrote for The Lantern at the time and that was BS. No doubt. Plus Mike was the epitome of what it means to be a Buckeye, he did everything right and was awesome to be around. But the level of hatred and what Kirk, and more importantly his family, had to endure was not proportional to bad journalism is really what I was getting at initially.

Still redact prior statements in support of him individually in light of recent events.

Why would a former Ohio State QB married to a former Ohio State cheerleader get so much push back from Ohio State fans?

The reasons are two-fold. First, in contrast to his PR attempts, Herbstreit is not "a legendary Ohio State quarterback". He barely saw the field until his senior year and then did not impress with only 7 TDs in his career. Second and most importantly, he has actively sought to harm the Ohio State program and its recruiting.

Second, he set out to damage Ohio State. Early in his ESPiN career, Herbstreit set out to make his name nationally. He traded off the notion that he was an Ohio State insider with great access to players and coaches as a former star quarterback at Ohio State. ESPiN frequently cut to one of his two rushing TDs to give credence to that story. Buckeye fans embraced him as one of their own, even if the story didn't match the career.

Herbstreit started talking on-air about things like player contacts and access. His assumptions and on-air comments eventually came into conflict with the treatment that Jim Tressel was willing to provide. Tressel refused to allow some things Herbstreit wanted to do.

Herbstreit responded like a small child denied a toy. When information came out about Ohio State players and tattoos, it was a perfect opportunity to show his power and throw his toys out of the cot. The tantrum blew the entire matter up and out of context. He attacked attacked Ohio State players and coaches, in what appears to be either retaliation for not getting his way or a way to use his former player status to make himself an important indicator of the rage that he was attempting to blow up. He fueled and gave support to Mark May, Trev Albert, and that cast of clowns who used these kids to get clicks. Kids like Brewster were greatly harmed by the false allegations that Herbstreit never withdrew.

The absolute revulsion that some Buckeye fans feel toward one of their own after this is not surprising. Blaming Herbstreit's family members for his actions is completely unacceptable. That said, Herbstreit brought his kids into the online discussions by vehemently stating that he would never allow his kids to play at Ohio State. One did as a preferred walk-on. That another kid did not get offers and has decided to go to TCUN should not really be a concern to us. That's his business and it sounds like he probably will not see the field there either.

Buckeye fans care about Herbstreit because of what he did around Tatgate and his part in turning that into the horrible thing it became. He turned on his own. We care because, as the air surrounding his career begins to suffocate him, we know this horror of a person will try once again to revive it with some attack against Ohio State.

There are a couple of other things that relate to Herbsteit’s treatment of tOSU and its players, as mentioned in @Ramzy’s article from January, 2011. This was shortly after Herbstreit and Fowler were the only voters in the AP poll to rank the Buckeyes 9th after they defeated Arkansas in the Sugar Bowl.

In case you didn’t hear, didn’t notice or have already forgotten, Ohio State finished the season by beating Arkansas in the Sugar Bowl. Arkansas was the second-place team in an extremely strong SEC West with a top-ten ranking. Try and process that without giving yourself a migraine.

Ever since Herbstreit vowed not to send his fictitious college-aged son to play in a Tressel offense in 2004, Ohio State has captured at least a share of every single Big Ten title – six in a row – produced a Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback and won three BCS bowl games. Between his plastic analysis, his hysterically brief involvement in “scoop” (Les Miles replacing Lloyd Carr, anyone?) and his forced disdain for Buckeye football, the only real entertainment left in a Herbstreit broadcast is waiting for the next absurdity to escape his breath.

Herbstreit’s decline following his famous 2004 declaration gained steam through the third quarter of the Alamo Bowl, during which ESPN famously devoted its broadcast burying the Ohio State football program as Herbstreit – just as famously – sat silently in the broadcast booth.
