That is definitely a player I would want on my team. No wonder Urban almost gushes about him.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The hometown recruit got away.

The rising star of a coach, who had tried to land him, was lured to another program as well.

Kenny Guiton completed 6 of 11 passes for 77 yards and a touchdown against Purdue.

With each heading in a different direction out of Houston, the chance for Kenny Guiton to make a little magic at quarterback in Tom Herman's spread offense seemed to have slipped out of reach in 2008. Instead, all that changed was the location, as they both swapped out Rice for Ohio State and ultimately combined for a moment that was about four years in the making -- and unforgettable for many more to come.

"Oh, yeah," Herman said. "Me and Kenny go way back."

2012 Recap: Guiton played the role of hero last season when he came off the sidelines and led Buckeyes to a come-from-behind overtime win vs. Purdue after an injury to Braxton Miller. Guiton saw action in nine games backing up Miller, completing 56.5 percent of his passes with two TDs in Coach Meyer?s spread attack.

2013 Outlook: Heading into his fifth and final season, Guiton looks to the future to keep growing not only as a player, but as a leader as well.

Q: What was life like for you after the Purdue game last season?
A: It was really cool. I went back to class and people were noticing and recognizing me. One day I was in a lab and this guy walked up to the front of the classroom, took of his jacket and his shirt said ?Keep calm and put Kenny G in?. I felt like I was walking on water or something.

Q: What has spring practice been like so far?
A: It has been energized since day one. We have been coming out, having fun and competing a lot, too.?

Q: How do you and the other seniors plan to fill the leadership void left by the seniors last season?
A: I think the team follows me and listens when I have something to say. I just want to be a positive leader and someone they can look up to. I want them to know that when my number is called, I am going to do something good.

Q: With a full year of learning Urban Meyer?s offense behind you, what do you look forward to in the upcoming months?
A: I?m looking forward to ?the juice?. This staff keeps ?the juice? up and you have to stay hyped when you are around them. The way Coach Meyer treats his seniors is pretty cool. Seniors come first.

Q: What is your relationship like with offensive coordinator/QBs coach Tom Herman and what is the best advice he has given you?
A: One thing I like about Coach Tom is that he can have fun. He is a very down-to-earth type of coach. He tries to speak our language sometimes and put a little slang into it. It?s so funny having him around.?

Q: With such a highly-ranked freshman class coming in this fall, what advice do you have for the new recruits?
A: Never stop working. Just because you have committed or you are the best in the country at your position, does not mean that the work stops. It only gets harder.

Whether Kenny Guiton has a future in football beyond his upcoming senior season at Ohio State remains to be seen. But it?s unlikely he will go into a career as a furniture mover.

Guiton, whom OSU offensive coordinator Tom Herman calls ?the best backup quarterback in college football,? suffered a cracked bone in his right (throwing) hand early in the summer and has been on the mend. Guiton said the break occurred when his hand got caught between two pieces of furniture as he was moving into a new apartment.

He is expected to be ready for the season. Guiton leaped into the spotlight last season when he relieved an injured Braxton Miller and led the Buckeyes to a comeback win over Purdue in overtime.
