QB Justin Fields (2019-20 B1G Off POY, 2020 Silver Football, 2019 B1G CCG MVP, Pittsburgh Steelers)

After watching more of Fields, I see the potential to be essentially JT Barrett with more speed and shake. Which would be a pretty good thing indeed.

I think Barrett's strongest "up" side was his ability to run the read option. Barrett was a good runner, but not great. He was a good passer, but not great. But making those reads was what made him so successful.
Watching other quarterbacks run the read-option, I think Barrett spoiled us with that play. Watch Trace McSorely from last year - he hands it off to the back, who gets tackled right away. The end has sold out on getting the back, and if McSorely pulled the ball back, you know he's going to do at least as well as the back did. Or the other way around. I'm sure the read is way tougher to do on the field, but Barrett was outstanding at it.

Anyway, if Fields can learn to make that read, and if Ohio State can call the correct plays for him, I'll be happy with this offense.

Fields made a couple of really nice throws to Mack on the sideline. They were ropes. He'll be more than adequate throwing (better than JT was) and he's a dynamic runner. The offense will be fine.

I have to think Field's running ability wil be the clincher in him being the starter. If Urban (who absolutely loved the duel threat QB) was still the head coach he'd be a definite "lock" to start.

How much of the QB numbers was o-line being limited? Conversely, how much of the RB success was due to LB not being settled? Obversely, why must we look at the spring game with grey-colored glasses? — @zidaya

I went back and looked at Justin Fields’ 4-for-13 performance and there are reasons not to be too upset about it. Let’s break down each of the passes.

1 – Skipped off of a helmet. Not good.
2 – Hand hit by a DL. Not great.
3 – Completed curl to Binjimen Victor.
4 – Rollout, caught jut out of bounds. Eh.
5 – Jump ball down sideline, Victor gets one hand on it, but has other hand tangled in a fight. Incomplete. If you want to see more 50/50 balls, you’re going to have to accept the downside.
6 – Deep comeback to Mack, completed. This pass was 30 yards on a line.
7 – Completed 10-yard out to Mack.
8 – Incomplete corner route to CJ Saunders, overthrown in the end zone.
9 – JK Dobbins drops screen pass.
10 – KJ Hill drops deep back shoulder pass.
11 – Binjimen Victor catches deep ball in stride for 98-yard touchdown.
12 – Incomplete, pass is a bit low and off of Garyn Prater’s hands.
13 – Out route too far outside for Garyn Prater. Incompletion.

So of Fields’ nine incompletions, two were drops, two others hit receivers’ hands, and one was caught just out of bounds. He threw four uncatchable balls — and two of those were because they were tipped at the line of scrimmage. The offensive line was also an issue, but I’d chalk the 4-of-13 up to it being spring ball and nothing else.

Note: O-Zone has a "typo", it's incompletions not interceptions.

He didn't look amazing, but it wasn't THAT bad!

Guys...A QB usually needs more than three months in a program to get the system, playbook, personnel, etc...Not worried!

Again, Haskins (2.5 years in the program) was 9-19 for 140 yards in last year's game. And about 40% of the people wanted Burrow as the starter following that game. Remember?
Yeah but NINE interceptions in 13 passes is....WHOA. Lol.

I'm evaluating him as Braxton.. and how every defense was petrified of Braxton's legs
which greatly helped his passing.. defenses were traumatized... pick your poison...
rush him too hard and regret flushing him out of the pocket
or take your chances letting him pass.. to this pack of Zone 6 studs...
