QB Justin Fields (2019-20 B1G Off POY, 2020 Silver Football, 2019 B1G CCG MVP, Pittsburgh Steelers)

The lived experience of racism in the South is not something I understand. What I do understand is that people of color feel a direct threat from others whenever something like that baseball player getting thrown off the team occurs. There is always the fear that you get out of your car at night and meet four wonderful good old boys with baseball bats. I'm sure that playing time also is part of this equation, but I don't discount that concern on his behalf.

Guy played in 12 games. Honestly, getting a waiver because of a drunk baseball player would be peak NCAA idiocy, especially when everyone knows the real reason he decided to transfer.

How many of them played in a dozen games the previous season?
Regarding the waiver, I feel there is pressure on the NCAA to not fuck over college players quite as much these days given the increased scrutiny on the billion dollar industry they are running on the backs of people who aren’t getting paid.

Given that circumstance, perhaps they should let players do what is best for them without additional burden for no real reason?

Whether it’s a desire to not have the entire system come crumbling down or not, it does seem very clear the NCAA is being more lenient in these cases recently.

To be upset about that seems... odd?

Lawyer: Eligibility case for Ohio State's Fields will not drag on

Vanderbilt-Georgia-Preview-Football-1.JPG

Tom Mars was the star of last year’s college football offseason.

The resolute, ambitious Arkansas attorney changed the game for transfers, winning eligibility cases for six Mississippi players, including Shea Patterson at Michigan.

Now he’s embarking on another high-profile waiver request case, seeking immediate eligibility for Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields.

“Unlike the situation with the Ole Miss transfers, the process of obtaining a waiver for Justin isn’t going to drag on for months,” Mars told The Blade, adding he believes a decision by the NCAA will be made by February.

“This is a high priority for Coach [Ryan] Day, and it’s my top priority at the moment. I’m confident the process will move quickly and that the NCAA will be able to make a decision on OSU’s waiver request much sooner than most people might think.”

Patterson’s request wasn’t granted until April 27, almost five months after the process began.

If you doubt Mars’ acumen and legal chops, call Ole Miss athletic director Ross Bjork and former Rebels coach Hugh Freeze. Mars essentially sat the Ole Miss brass in the corner and furnished them with dunce caps.

The thought is Fields will win his waiver request. So, what is the former Georgia quarterback’s argument and why is it viewed by some as a slam dunk?

The Georgia-Tennessee game Sept. 29 featured little drama, as the Bulldogs easily dispatched the Volunteers 38-12. Fields, a true freshman, completed one of two pass attempts and rushed five times for 45 yards and two touchdowns in backing up Jake Fromm.

The most consequential event in Sanford Stadium that day occurred in the stands, when a Georgia baseball player used a racial slur in reference to Fields. All-SEC first baseman Adam Sasser yelled, “Put the [N-word] in the game,” multiple times.

The university opened an anti-discrimination/anti-harassment investigation of the incident through the school’s Equal Opportunity Office, and Sasser was dismissed from the baseball team.

“I want to emphasize that we do not condone discriminatory behavior,” Georgia athletic director Greg McGarity said in September.

“It’s sad that something like this would happen,” Georgia coach Kirby Smart said. “I’m disappointed. But it doesn’t affect our family here, our unit here, and our kids have been great. It’s not something I’ve had to address with them. I’ve addressed it with Justin. That’s the most important thing.”

Fields was one of the highest-rated shortstop recruits in the country and is considered a professional baseball prospect. But he wasn’t comfortable joining the Georgia baseball team because of the slurs directed toward him, a source said.

The egregious behavior bylaw in the NCAA rulebook, which Mars used in his arguments for Patterson’s immediate eligibility, states a waiver will be granted “in cases where the student-athlete was a victim of objective, documented egregious behavior by a staff member or student at the previous institution and the previous institution supports the waiver.”

SKULL SESSION: QUINCY AVERY ON JUSTIN FIELDS, FIELDS' ELIGIBILITY CASE WON'T DRAG ON, AND NICK BOSA STILL ATOP THE DRAFT BOARD

QUINCY AVERY TALKS FIELDS.
There are few people in the country who know Justin Fields' talent better than quarterbacks trainer Quincy Avery, who has also worked with Dwayne Haskins and other elite quarterbacks like Deshaun Watson.

The guy has worked with some impressive, impressive quarterbacks. So when he gives his evaluation on Ohio State's newest signal caller, I'm gonna listen.

This is why I'm fine with the "Justin Fields is better than Trevor Lawrence or Tua Tagovailoa" #takes, even if I'm not ready to hop on that train myself, because the logic is there.

Fields is a drastically better, faster and more powerful runner than either of those lads, and never proved to be significantly worse slinging the football at any point in their evaluations. In fact, as Avery says, Fields often performed better throwing the ball.

I mean, the guy was the Elite 11 MVP, and that doesn't happen if you're not an elite passer.

Personally, I'm going to wait until he plays competitive snaps before I knight him, just as a did with Dwayne Haskins. But I'm more than fine with others hopping on the bandwagon early.

peak idiocy would be the NCAA denying the hardship waiver, whether it's warranted or not, because i guarantee that the NCAA will be portrayed in the media as racist if they don't grant it.

I absolutely hate to make this comparison (HATE)....

But, what's the similarity here with Baker Mayfield? I know that dickface tried many ways to start at OU right away but ultimately had to sit out (?). Also, just from scanning this thread, it seems there's a lot of mixed feelings regarding Fields and his way in to tOSU legally. Personally, I say get him in any way we can. I like him... if only just for the possible puns: "Memorable DAYS on tOSU FIELDS as team heads to 2019 CFP?" Anyone?

I don't discount the kids feelings about the racial slur. We can't read his mind. He may have loved Uga and wanted to wait his turn for all we know.

Either way, college football is a QB league and OSU should be in great shape at the QB position.

:slappy:That's the funniest thing I've heard all day...
Is there evidence he did not? I haven't seen any myself but I haven't looked either. Can you point me to where he didn't like UGa? He did originally commit there.

To me, if he "hated" UGA he wouldn't have stuck around through the Bowl Game, he would have bolted and flipped them the bird instead of the way he handled it.

That's not peak idiocy...that's just continued idiocy.

And only idiocy if you think the rules that bind these unpaid workers are good ones.
Precisely. They have to decide which version of the probably deceitful recruiting pitches they like best.

The kids get recruited by coaches that bail or get fired after they sign a one-way contract. Either the coach gets a better deal or their bosses find a better replacement. Very infrequently, their coaches stay put.

Then they have to pray that they aren't cut to make room for unknown commodities in high school, even if they were model students and teammates.

It's turning the farce against itself @Buckeye513, without destroying the beneficial system (particularly for the non revenue sports and more consistent student athletes)
