QB Justin Fields (2019-20 B1G Off POY, 2020 Silver Football, 2019 B1G CCG MVP, Pittsburgh Steelers)

Futures: Ohio State QB Justin Fields

Stop comparing Justin Fields to previous Ohio State quarterbacks. At best, it is a lazy dismissal of a prospect without having to put any critical thought into why he may or may not actually succeed. At worst, it is a disingenuous way to add on additional criticism to a player someone may already not like to begin with. There is reason to believe Fields is not a flawless prospect, but the helmet stickers have nothing to do with that.

What makes the Ohio State argument so disingenuous is that none of the previous Buckeyes quarterbacks were supposed to be good, save for Dwayne Haskins. Right off the bat, we can remove anyone prior to the Urban Meyer/Ryan Day era from the discussion. It makes no sense to compare quarterbacks from different systems. Craig Krenzel, Troy Smith, and Terrelle Pryor do not matter in this conversation.

That leaves us with Braxton Miller, J.T. Barrett, Cardale Jones, and Haskins. Miller was eventually moved to wide receiver. Barrett went undrafted, while Jones was a fourth-round pick for little more than having a booming arm and a short miracle run in the playoff. Haskins was a legit first-round prospect and is the only player worth comparing to Fields. Even then, though, it's clear Fields is a different animal, both in terms of tools and play style.

The key difference between the two most recent Buckeyes quarterbacks is that Fields is a big-game hunter. Haskins was a good processor in college, but more along the lines of someone who wanted to keep the train on schedule. Fields, on the other hand, will hold out for every chance he can get to deliver plays down the field. The construct of Ohio State's offense clearly shifted over the past two years to accommodate Fields in that way and it paid off.

“Whatever NFL team asks him to do, he will learn it very, very quickly. One thing he’s gonna do is he’s gonna make a lot of plays. When you look back on his career here and what he did, he made a lot of plays. This is the time of year in the NFL draft where people are gonna go after you and try to find your warts. That’s fine. And they may find something that’s really perfect for their system and they might wanna find someone who really fits into a box.

“I can promise you this, Justin Fields is gonna make plays in the NFL. No matter what you do, no matter what you say, you can’t put a value on that – his ability to make plays. He’s done it with space, with his feet, making throws down the field, those things are gonna continue to happen at that level. Again, I always think great coaching is adjusting your scheme to the personnel that you have, and some team’s gonna get very lucky by drafting him.”

Ohio State QB Justin Fields ran the 40-yard dash in an unofficial 4.41 seconds on Thursday.
Fields (6'3/228) teased that he expected to be down into the 4.3's by OSU's pro day on March 30. The quarterback's unofficial straight-line sprint on Thursday would have been just .02 seconds slower than that of Jonathan Taylor at last year's combine. This recent bit of positive buzz was perhaps a needed one for Fields, who seems to have largely fallen out of rankings favor for BYU's Zach Wilson at QB2. We are now consistently seeing Wilson drafted over Fields in mocks (very consistently tied to the Jets, too, Wilson). Even if Wilson is selected ahead of him, though, Fields is still in play for a top-10 or even top-five pick.

"4.39, 4.38. That's my goal but we're not running slower than a 4.42, 4.43. 4.43 is the slowest I'll run today. I'm not running slower than that," Fields said in the video. The person Fields is working with says to him, "You ain't no regular quarterback." Fields responds, "No. Most of the people think I'm a mid-4.5 guy. Maybe they give me credit for the low 4.5 but they gonna see today. They gonna see that real speed today."
