Despite Strong Spring From the QBs, Incoming Freshman Dwayne Haskins Will Be In the Mix
Having just led his team to a Spring Game win over J.T. Barrett and the
hated Scarlet squad, victorious Gray quarterback Joe Burrow sat on a chair in the OSU postgame interview room and pitched a satisfied gaze at his newfound kingdom.
Okay, maybe not. Despite having been the backup quarterback all spring — and doing enough to keep the job moving into the summer — Burrow was aware that there is still plenty of competition to come in the fall.
"We’re competing every day, and then Dwayne Haskins coming in, we’re going to compete with him too," he said. "So every day is going to be a tough competition for us."
Oh yeah, Dwayne Haskins, the High School All-American High School quarterback that the Buckeyes signed in the 2016 recruiting class. Almost forgot about him.
Almost.
Quarterbacks coach Tim Beck certainly hasn't forgotten about Haskins, and when asked if he expects the incoming freshman to be in the mix in the fall, he had no doubts.
"Absolutely," he said. "In our program we never count anyone out. The expectations are going to be very high for him to come in and learn the offense and compete to try to play. It's Joe Burrow, it's Steve Collier, J.T. Barrett, it's their job to keep him at bay. That's part of the competition level and being a quarterback here at Ohio State.
"The quarterback position is very difficult to play. He (Haskins) is a very smart young man. He understands the concepts and coverages and things like that. That gives him an advantage over a guy who maybe is a great quarterback but hasn't been trained very well and they come in and everybody says 'We're excited about this guy,' but does he really have a chance to play the quarterback position? I think Dwayne does."
