QB Dwayne Haskins Jr. (All B1G, B1G OPOY, Silver Football, Rose Bowl MVP, R.I.P.)

To an Athlete Dying Young
BY A. E. HOUSMAN
The time you won your town the race
We chaired you through the market-place;
Man and boy stood cheering by,
And home we brought you shoulder-high.

Today, the road all runners come,
Shoulder-high we bring you home,
And set you at your threshold down,
Townsman of a stiller town.

Smart lad, to slip betimes away
From fields where glory does not stay,
And early though the laurel grows
It withers quicker than the rose.

Eyes the shady night has shut
Cannot see the record cut,
And silence sounds no worse than cheers
After earth has stopped the ears.

Now you will not swell the rout
Of lads that wore their honours out,
Runners whom renown outran
And the name died before the man.

So set, before its echoes fade,
The fleet foot on the sill of shade,
And hold to the low lintel up
The still-defended challenge-cup.

And round that early-laurelled head
Will flock to gaze the strengthless dead,
And find unwithered on its curls
The garland briefer than a girl’s.

On his football legacy.

Day’s emergence and the incredible revolution we saw and still enjoy at the QB position are not possible without Dwayne. The reason we get Fields and then Stroud is because they saw the heights our way of playing can take QBs through Dwayne’s historic season.

Hand in hand with that we really became WRU with that season as well. And we still reap the benefits of that.

Not to mention he loved killing wolverines and winning the B1G.

So brief but such heights… honestly shifted the course of a position at OSU

I was just saying the same thing to a couple of my alumni friends. Obviously this is sad mostly on a personal level. But to ignore his legacy as a football player in Columbus would be a disservice as well. Dwayne was the first real QB we've had to elevate us to the level we are at. Without Dwayne, we would be in the Steve Bellisari stone age at QB. Incredible player but hell, it was Dwayne as a person that has us all torn up (see below). I think we will all remember him as a person and player, in that order, but both are remarkable.

I haven’t been this affected by an athlete dying since I was a kid. Even Kobe’s death, whom I worshipped as a teen, didn’t bother me like this. This is robbery.

Same. It fucking sucks and I will straight up say it, there is no tearing up for me, just a waterfall today...this just hit so hard. You watch DH basically commit when he is like 12 walking through the Woody as an innocent kid that fell in love with Ohio State like we all did. Wholesome as it gets and with the family there. Most of the time a sports celebrity dies and I say the "oh too bad, thoughts and prayers" line. This one is way beyond that, a true kick to the groin and all the way up to the heart. The only other #7's that come close were Germaine and Ginn. As much as I loved them, Dwayne just held a special place in my heart. Really hope he gets a huge tribute in the first week of September, when we unleash a pure fucking beatdown on Notre Dame in Columbus.
