Adrian Peterson 'expecting big things' from Dwayne Haskins
Back in February, the Washington Redskins picked up the second-year club option on Adrian Peterson’s contract.
"Adrian Peterson is the epitome of what it means to be a pro in this league," new coach Ron Rivera said in a release. "Adrian's leadership and passion towards the game of football will set an example of what is expected of the players in this program moving forward."
Peterson is exactly the kind of player Rivera wants on his roster surrounding second-year quarterback Dwayne Haskins. In a recent interview with local media on a Zoom call via NBC Sports Washington, Peterson talked about his expectations for Haskins and the team this season.
"With Haskins coming back, too, I'm really excited about him and how he ended the season last year," Peterson said. "It was just tremendous to see him just unfold and let his game go to a high level. It clicked.
"I want to see him blossom. I'm expecting big things from him."
Last season, Haskins dealt with a messy Redskins team in his rookie campaign, one that saw it’s head coach Jay Gruden fired after an 0-5 start and one in which Haskins didn’t get the chance to start until Week 9.
Before Week 9, Haskins appeared in just two games in relief of then-starter Case Keenum. He looked lost at times in those appearances, completing 12 of 22 passes for zero touchdowns and four interceptions.
After Week 9 when Haskins was named the starter, he slowly improved throughout the rest of the season. In seven games as a starter, Haskins was 2-5 completing 59 percent of his passes with seven touchdowns and three interceptions
Coming into this season, Rivera has made it clear that although Haskins enters training camp as the starter, he will have to deal with some competition. This offseason, Rivera signed quarterback Kyle Allen, who started for Rivera last season in Carolina after Cam Newton suffered a season-ending injury.
Peterson believes learning the new playbook this offseason will be a crucial step to Haskins’ success this year.
"I know he's been in his book and he's working hard to be that leader we need him to be," Peterson said. "I think last year was an eye-opener for him, just from the transition he went through from training camp to the end of the season...You can see that by how he's working out and how he's approaching things."

Just sayin': With Haskins, McLaurin, Baugh, and Young the 2020 Redskins will have a pretty good "Buckeye representation".
