QB Antonio Henton (transfer to Ga. Southern and FT. Valley St.)

Henton's departure confirmed
A source in the Ohio State football program confirmed for The Dispatch yesterday that sophomore quarterback Antonio Henton, a native of Fort Valley, Ga., is going to transfer to Georgia Southern. He will be eligible this season because Georgia Southern is a Football Championship Subdivision school.

Henton's departure leaves the Buckeyes with three quarterbacks on scholarship: returning starter Todd Boeckman, a senior; redshirt freshman Joe Bauserman, who tried pro baseball for three years before opting for college football; and freshman Terrelle Pryor, the No. 1 overall recruit in the nation this year, who started summer school at Ohio State last week.

Former Peach County star Henton officially a Georgia Southern Eagle
By Michael A. Lough - [email protected]

The last football game Antonio Henton played in Georgia was a state championship game. The next football game Henton is likely to play in his home state will be against a national championship favorite.

The former Peach County standout quarterback spent this morning enrolling at Georgia Southern, making his transfer from Ohio State official and complete.

"All I know," Eagles head coach Chris Hatcher said just before lunchtime, "is that he's in school here right now and he's a Georgia Southern Eagle."

Henton took care of the necessary paperwork in Statesboro and began taking classes in the school's final summer session, as did offensive lineman Trey Dunmon, a former Hawkinsville standout who is transferring from Georgia Tech.

"We'll physical him up this afternoon," Hatcher said of Henton. "And he'll start lifting weights in the morning."

In transferring from a Football Bowl Subdivision team to a Football Championship Subdivision team (formerly divisions I-A and I-AA), Henton is eligible immediately and should be on the field when the Eagles visit Georgia on Aug. 30.

Henton passed for 3,927 yards and 49 touchdowns in his final two seasons at Peach County, rushing for 900 yards and 12 touchdowns in the same span. He earned a long list of honors as a senior and took that resume to Ohio State.

Even before arriving in Columbus, Henton was compared to Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith. Henton redshirted - and battled groin and shoulder problems - during Smith's senior season.

He played in four games last year before being suspended after an arrest for solicitation. He pleaded guilt to a lesser charge nearly two months later and was reinstated but didn?t play again. Henton unofficially dropped to third on the depth chart in the spring, and a logjam was created at the position with the signing of highly touted recruit Terrelle Pryor of Pennsylvania.

The transfer reunites Henton with Rance Gillespie, his head coach at Peach County, who Hatcher hired a few weeks after taking over at Georgia Southern in January of 2007.

"We're getting an outstanding player and a great kid," Gillespie said. "I think he's very excited to be here. He grew up in Fort Valley, so he's familiar with all the traditions here and the type of program that he's becoming a part of."

Ohio State officials contacted Georgia Southern last week, Hatcher said, and indicated Henton may inquire about transferring. Henton then did and finished the process this morning after his first meeting with Hatcher.

"He's a good guy, but we knew that," said Hatcher, who is keeping Henton off-limits to the media today. "Rance coached him all the way from the eighth grade on. We got a coach who coached him through the most important years of his life.

"We knew what we were getting."

STATESBORO - Coach Chris Hatcher has a never-ending quest to improve the Georgia Southern football program.

So when quarterback Antonio Henton looked to transfer from Ohio State, Hatcher saw an opportunity to reel in one of the top high school players in the state in 2005.

Suddenly, Hatcher's dilemma of filling the void left by graduated Walter Payton Award winner Jayson Foster looks less daunting.

Henton, a native of Fort Valley, made it official Monday morning by enrolling at GSU.

"All of my guys know I'm trying to get the best players I can for our football team. They'll compete for jobs in practice every day and the best players play in the games," Hatcher said.

During the spring, Hatcher named red-shirt freshman Lee Chapple the team's No. 1 quarterback heading into fall workouts. Hatcher said Henton will start at the bottom of the depth chart.

The competition should make every quarterback in camp better.

GSU offensive coordinator Rance Gillespie, who coached Henton at Peach County, described the 6-foot-1, 236-pound signal caller as an accurate passer who can run when a play breaks down.

Henton passed for 2,117 yards and 30 touchdowns while directing Peach County's spread offense to a Class AAA state championship as a senior.

GSU runs a similar spread attack.

"(Henton) has all the intangibles," Gillespie said "He was great in high school. A great worker, a great leader."

Rob Oller commentary: Henton's scramble was the right play

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Quarterbacks grow up learning to read what's in front of them, so it makes sense that Antonio Henton would size up his situation and call an audible.

Hut one ? Todd Boeckman is entrenched as Ohio State's starter ? hut two ? freshman Joe Bauserman appears to have passed Henton on the depth chart ? hut three ? true freshman Terrell e Pryor is waiting in the wings.

Check, check. Henton changes the play to a run -- from Ohio State to Georgia Southern. The sophomore made his transfer official yesterday by enrolling at Georgia Southern, Eagles coach Chris Hatcher said.

"He was looking for a place to go, and what better place to come to than Georgia Southern?" Hatcher said.

Henton should enjoy a soft landing, which is a critical component any time a college quarterback transfers. More than any other position, quarterback success is tied to comfort level, which can fluctuate depending on a program's offensive system and the person in charge of that system.

At Georgia Southern, Henton will be reunited with offensive coordinator Rance Gillespie, who coached him at Peach County High School in Fort Valley, Ga. He also is eligible to play immediately, not needing to sit out a year because Georgia Southern plays in the Football Championship Subdivision.

"Antonio is a fine young man and he will do very well in the future," Ohio State coach Jim Tressel said.

Eagles land ex Ohio State QB
By Alex Pellegrino
Updated: June 25, 2008

Chris Hatcher took a deep breath, smiled and confirmed the mounting speculation: Antonio Henton is officially an Eagle.

The former Ohio State quarterback enrolled at Georgia Southern Monday and will begin working out with the team Tuesday.

"He was looking for a place to go, and what better place to come to than Georgia Southern," Hatcher said. "He?s from middle Georgia so he knows all the traditions and the lore about Georgia Southern. I think it?s going to be a good fit for him and us."

The arrival of the 2005 Georgia Offensive Player of the Year brings automatic intrigue to GSU?s quarterback race where the Eagles are looking to replace Walter Payton Award winner Jayson Foster.

Henton?s top-prospect, major-university status won?t make him a shoo-in for the No. 1 spot. Hatcher said he?ll start at the bottom the depth chart and have to beat out redshirt freshman Lee Chapple, who won the job during spring practice, and backup Kyle Collins. Billy Lowe is questionable for the season and Leander Barney is an incoming freshman, so Hatcher was concerned about the Eagles? lack of depth and experience at the position.

"He?ll have to work himself up the ladder if he wants to play in that opener versus the University of Georgia ? he understands that," Hatcher said. "If you are a competitor, if you?re a football player, that?s what you expect to happen whenever you go to a new place.

Antonio has a hell of a long ball, his wind-up reminds me of Dontrell Willis. He can also scramble for days. I feel sorry for the Defensive Coordinators down there.

Wow, so Henton reminds you of a LEFT-HANDED pitcher who had a 10.32 ERA in four starts and is now laboring at triple-A despite a $7 million dollar salary? You are too kind!

Plus, I'm not too sure how appropriate it is to refer to any QB as having a "wind-up". Your statement doesn't even make sense. Dontrelle has a Juan Marichal-esque leg-kick. What about Henton's release could possibly remind you of that?!?!
