Put down the cell phone and drive!

3. As for old people slowing you down I love to hear the whining. I am pretty much retired and rarely in a hurry. Somebody gets closer to my butt than I think they should be I slow down to 5 mph below the speed limit and we start the game. If you can actually tell that I am watching you in my rear view mirror you win. If I can get you to make some sort of hand gesture, look at your speedemoter more than once, or make a dangerous pass (I am the guy who blows you a kiss when you go by) I win.

Humm, sounds like "distracted driving" to me ... I guess that would be a felony? Of course no one could really determine your level of distraction when you are focusing your attention on the car behind you huh? Not like when there is a log of your cell phone use. Then it's easy to determine the lever of distraction right? Makes no sense. I see little difference in cell phone usage to what Oh8ch is describing. Of course, on a cell phone you could focus your attention on the road ahead instead of just the car behind you. :wink2:

Doing 45 in a 65 is a hazard and illegal. Doing 40 in a 45 is not in any state.

If you're in the left lane on a highway, then going 60 just to teach the driver behind you a lesson is bordering on anti-social behavior. Written law or not, that is the passing lane (I assume this situation arises on highways more than other roads).

And nobody needs to be teaching other drivers lessons except for traffic cops.

I think that Oh8ch was kidding about that.

But if anybody tries that in Europe, that sound you'll hear when you put the finger up in the air is your gas tank exploding. :tongue2:

The "Left Lane Vigilante" is illegal in most states and Colorado recently cracked down on them. Left lane is for passing. Period.

What a hoot this turned out to be.

My tongue was largely in my cheek as relates to the 'game'. But I love some of the responses.

My wife is an aggressive driver and when I am going too slow for her she will sometimes comment that I am 'Only going five miles over the speed limit.'. I acknowledge her comment with 'You are right, I AM going illegally fast.' Not sure I even understand the point of posted limits any more.

I do often slow down for tailgaters. Nothing pisses me off more than to be passing in the left lane at a reasonable pace (a 'cruise control pass' - going 72 around someone travelling 71 - is not a reasonable pace) and some a-hole flies up behind me and parks two feet off my butt. I do consider the conditions and safety factors. I also consider it a safety factor to not have assured clear distance behind me - or has no one other than Thump and I ever been rear ended?

And I feel zero responsibility for the actions of aggressive drivers. They cause far more accidents than slow old folks and the argument that Joe wouldn't have beat his wife if she had been quicker getting him a beer just doesn't fly.

I saw some research data that shed some light on cell phone usage and driving. Turns out that talking on a cell phone with a headset is notlike talking to a passenger. Your mind has to work a lot harder to distinguish the words you hear from the headset because the sound is not clear and could be cutting in and out. Sure, you now can have both hands on the wheel, but the level of distraction is still pretty high. Regardless, driving to work everyday is by far the #1 riskiest thing you can do. Maybe if people didn't take that fact for granted, we would be safer drivers...

What if you live in a rural area and it would take awhile for an amulance to get there? Seems like it is quicker to drive on direction than to wait for a ambulance coming from the hospital and then turning around and going back.

Then the person in the emergency situation would be passing the person in front of him instead of fucking tailgating him, wouldn't he? :roll1:

I'd say they are sending a message... but no more than those who sit two feet off of my bumper (when I'm passing at 7-10 over the speed limit).

So you sit in the passing lane and block traffic?

As has been pointed out you're contributing to the problem just as much as the folks you like to antagonize.

You're not teaching anyone a lesson, you're just an asshole who gets off on annoying others.

Thanks for making things more dangerous on the road for the rest of us.

Bravo.

How can you read his post and get "Sits in left lane and blocks traffic"? He stated clearly that he's talking about passing in the left lane at a "reasonable pace".

You're just a hot head, and likely the type of person he's talking about.

agreed. If somebody ran Oh8 off the road, I'd laugh and say he deserved it.

He intentionally impedes the flow of traffic. That is a contributing factor to accidents, and in quite a few countries it's a ticketable offense.

Proper road etiquette is to merge to the right and let a faster vehicle pass.
Slowing down and staring at them at the mirror is hardly the hallmark of a safe driver.

You're just a hot head, and likely the type of person he's talking about.
Sorry to disapoint you but I rarely speed much these days, and when I do it's usually just to stay with the flow of traffic. If someone is moving faster than me I move to let them pass.

If I were a "hot head" I'd be far more likely to slow down in front of them to "prove a point".

Being in the right doesn't give one the right to behave like a jerk.

I personally don't view driving as a game and the last thing I want to do is increase level of stress for myself or my fellow motorists...and yes I find it absolutley flabbergasting that not only are there people who actively try to piss off other drivers, but that they have the nerve to gloat about it.

Not once did I defend anyone who drives signifigantly faster than those around them. They tend to make it more dangerous for the rest of us. However anyone who purposely blocks other motorists is just as guilty of creating unsafe circumstances.

When you're at the bank and the guy behind you is pissed off at the world and bitching about being in a hurry do you start poking him with your thumb to see if you can push him over the edge?

I do not arbitrarily pick out drivers and dick with them.

I respond to TAILGATERS. I'm not talking about tye typical spacing on todays freeways as nobody maintains proper assured clear distance anymore. I am talking about folks who are so close they could not possibly avoid an accident if I needed to make a sudden stop. Fact is 95% of the time when I slow down the guy behind me does back off to a reasonable distance and we go about our business. I would argue that actually makes the world a safer place.

I find it intimidating to have someone half a car lenght off my butt. It is a distraction and it is dangerous. Tailgating is aggressive, rude, and ILLEGAL! You don't want me impeding your progress OBEY TRAFFIC LAWS and stay off my ass. Tailgating is no less 'intentional' than anything I am doing.

I did a quick web search and found several articles discussing tailgating as a leading cause of accidents. Even found a nice report that described the psychology of tailgating as an attempt to intimidate the driver in front. But that is all cool, right? It is the slow guy who 'causes aggressive driving' that is the problem.

Yep that's exactly what I said.

I said it's all your fault.

I never stated that the speeders were dangerous at all.

No one is claiming that tailgating is less intentional they are merely pointing that yoru actions are just as intentional and exacerbate the problem.

5537-2-03 Speed Regulations.

(B)
No person shall operate a motor vehicle on the turnpike at such a slow speed as to impede or block the normal and reasonable movement of traffic, except when such reduced speed is necessary for safe operation or when ordered to do so by a police officer.

5537-2-09 Driving Lane - Passing.
The operator of a motor vehicle shall drive in the outer and center traffic lanes in the designated direction for traffic, except when lawfully crossing from one lane to another. The operator of a motor vehicle shall use the inner traffic lanes for passing only. Where three traffic lanes are provided for the same direction of travel, heavy commercial vehicles and vehicles operated at a rate of speed below the maximum in effect shall drive in the outer lane and shall use the center lane for passing only.

(emphasis mine)

Yes speeding and tailgating (lack of minimum assured stopping distance) are illegal. So are intentionally blocking traffic and using the left lane for anything besides passing.

Again the fact that someone else behaves in an anti-social manner or breaks the law doesn't give you the right to do so yourself.

It's not about being in the right it's about ensuring your own safety.

Being an ass on the road just increases the likelihood of you or someone you care about being injured. Eventually you're going to "play the game" with the wrong person and the two of you will manage to cause an accident, or you'll really piss off some misanthrope who's going to follow you to your next stop and put a bullet in your head.

The fact that they were behaving like an idiot first will be little comfort when you're in a hospital somewhere.
