PS3 $400+, last for decade

Exhawg: from what I've read the ps3 will have many hardware advantages. I wish I could remember the details. . .

However, I don't know if they will amount to the same level of advantage that the xbox apparently has over the ps2 (I've only played the xbox once, and only play the ps2 probably 20 days a year for an hour or so each day). Man. 20 hours a year? I need to get on that. . . (damn wife, damn work, etc.)

With my new hdtv, I plan on becoming a junkie like in my youth. My mid life 30 year old crisis will involve hdtv and video games, damn it.

The debate between the hardware seems to be somewhat unclear at this point. The main difference (if I remember correctly) regarding performance is that the XBox is going to have 3 hyperthreaded cpus while the PS3 will have 1 cell chip, that is supposed to be like having numerous cpus as well. The big question regarding the PS3s design is whether programmers will be able to develop games that fully utilize it's capabilities. Numerous insights that I have read seem to say that the performance will be similar on both systems, and that the XBox system might actually be the better gaming system based on it's design.

The PS3 though, is supposed to play HD-DVDs right out of the box, whereas MS doesn't have any plans to make their system able to play HD-DVDs, even though all of their games must be coded with HD graphics.

My take on this whole thing is that both systems will essentially be equal, in terms of their game performance. XBox360 will be first and cheaper, whereas the PS3 will also play HD-DVD (Blue Ray format I believe, which might end up not being the dominant HD-DVD format in the long run. Beta?) I'm sure that both systems will be great and will obviously have fans that will swear their system is the best. In truth though, I don't foresee the performance delta existing which currently separates the PS2 and Xbox.

Aside from brand loyalty, the way I see it anyhow, it really comes down to: availability, price, and HD-DVDs. If someone really loves Sony or must have HD-DVDs with their next system, then they should wait for the PS3. If they don't have those requirements, then they shouldn't wait, and should just go out and get a 360.

That's my $.02 anyways.

Don't be so sure that the XBox 360 won't play HD-DvD movies.

They have flirted with the idea for awhile, they say they might make an add-on peice to do so later...horrible idea.

But they are staying kind of hush, i would say there is about a 20% chance that it is hd-dvd compatible.

The thing I've noticed is that most xbox owners have played a ps2 long enough to know the nuances of both... whereas many ps2 owners barely play on an xbox and forever write it off as being awkward and inferior.

Outside of sports games, the triggers vs. black/white really isn't a big deal.

And when you are going on 7+ hours in one day of Ninja Gaiden or Halo 2, you greatly appreciate that you are playing with a very ergonomic controller.
