Professional Tennis (official thread)

So glad to see a young gun take out Djokovic in a well-played final.

Props to the umpire for calling the time violation warning on Djoker when he was serving at 4-5 in the second set tiebreaker. Even though he won that point, he lost the breaker after a couple of unforced errors, and couldn’t take extra time before serving in the final 3 sets.

He has the records to be called the greatest player ever, but I hate watching him play - I think a conservative estimate of how many times he bounced the ball before his serves in this match is a couple of thousand.

Quite a contrast watching other top-5 players bounce the ball only a couple of times before starting their points.

Well the big news in professional tennis is that the Western and Southern Tournament in Mason Ohio is going to stay for another 25 years. It was felt that the tournament was going to move to Charlotte but in the end the Cincinnati community put enough money to keep it there.

Very nice of the tournament to get Djoker and Coco to record the announcement:

If you haven't been to the tournament (or any tennis tournament), I can't recommend it enough. Tennis may be boring on TV to some, but in person it's quite exciting. The best part is not the main stadium where if you get cheap tickets, your seat is way up in the nosebleeds. But all the smaller courts are first come, first serve. You can sit in the front row for some top players. The Cincinnati tournament is the warmup for US Open so almost all the top players are there.

You can basically watch all day and go to different courts. The food is pretty good (all the usually Cincinnati fare including Skyline, LaGrossa, and Graeters) and of course the alcohol. You can get drunk from beer, wine, cocktails. Unlike baseball, football, basketball, they don't stop serving.

Definitely an underrated gem in the Cincinnati area.

Closest I've ever been to attending is driving by on 71 as the tourney was in full swing. Place was packed

I love to go mid-week as all the courts are being used for singles and doubles. At the end of the tournament it's the big matches but obviously fewer courts are being used. If you go too early, then the top players aren't playing yet.

If you have kids, can easily get autographs of the players when they get off the practice court.

I'm actually not that excited about the move to a 2 week tournament. Since I don't live in Cincinnati will be harder to figure out when to go without taking up too many vacation days.

Sinner/Djoker is going to be 3-4 hours of tremendous tennis. Aussie Open semifinals on now.
Watched this match this morning. Loved seeing Sinner dominate Djokovic.

Yeah, Djoker won the third set in a tiebreak, but he was broken at least twice in 3 different sets, and Sinner never faced a break point on his serve! That’s right, the best returner in the history of the game had ZERO chances at a break.

A career-defining win for American Madison Keys in the Aussie Open final today.

In a very high quality match, she beat Sabalenka 7-5 in the third set, winning with a break in the final game despite Sabalenka getting in all 6 first serves. She won the match by hitting winners, nothing was given to her.

Keys beat #10 Collins, #6 Rybakina, #2 Swiatek (10-8 in the final set breaker) and #1 in the final. She definitely earned it.

Keys turns 30 next month, and has spent over half her life as a pro, never before living up to her potential. She got married to her coach in November, she finally lowered the toss on her serve, and she played the tournament of her life.

So glad Iga got beat. She acted like a total clown during her defeat to Keys.

And of course icing on the cake was Djoker getting booed off the court. Yeah, yeah he was hurt. But of course the backstory is how he whined and cried about not being allowed to enter the country when he didn't want to get vaccinated against covid-19.
