Potential 2008 craptacular Bowl matchups

I am looking at the ESPN bowl projections, and some of these games are, well...craptacular. Among the potential highlights:

Louisiana Tech versus Colorado State
West Virginia versus UTEP
Memphis versus Louisiana-Lafayette
Nevada versus UNLV (again)
Hawaii versus Buffalo
San Jose State versus Boston College
Rutgers versus Rice

and my personal scalper's night off pick:

Florida International versus Northern Illinois

WTF do we have so many bowl games? I think they should change it so teams need 7 wins and cut the number of games, or something. I mean really, do you think they'd get more than 50 people at an FIU/NIU game?

I know I'm a homer but Rutgers has won 4 in a row including games against Pitt, UConn, and USF. Average score of 37-20 in those games. They're playing as good as anyone in the Big East, whatever that means.

I wasn't implying that all the teams sucked, just that the games sucked...do we need the pagentry of bowl season for Rutgers to play Rice? Wouldn't you rather see them play someone from the Big XII or the ACC?

I will agree that you are a little bit of a "homer":) and that Rutgers has played pretty well this season but do you think anyone else outside of the state of New Jersey would have an interest in watching them play Rice. I am sorry but the bowl situation is just gone way out of hand and some of those matchups aren't worth my time.

Seven wins would make it too difficult for Charlie Tuna to work his "Strategic Advantage Machine."

But I'd rather watch Florida International play Northern Illinois than NBA or NASCAR. Always look for the silver lining.

Apparently the sponsors think otherwise. :wink2:

Actually, the real reason we have so many bowl games scattered all over the country and spanning over a month is because these are student-athletes and a playoff would be too much of a burden on them. That's why they play bowl games at all levels of college foo...oh, wait.

The local rag brought out the real reason the BYUs, Boise States and Hawaiis of this world get dissed at bowl selection time: fan base. U Cincinnati is hoping to win the Big East Bowl spot, but they can't count on 17K fans to travel and see them play... hell, they probably can't use their 5K seats in the 'shoe and they seldom pack Yeager when they play for the victory bell against Miami, 45 minutes away. Without 17K fans, even the Orange Bowl is a potential money loss for them.

BYU, Boise and Hawaii get dissed because their conference commissioners aren't part of the BCS. The only reason they even get a shot at a BCS bowl is because they filed suit and the BCS boys thought they were going to lose under anti-trust statutes, so they gave them an in.

you mean the Miners vs The Mountaineers isnt an attractive matchup?

It's just gotta be hard on a fanbase, let alone the players I imagine, to have some high expectations, scrap all year for a BCS berth, then have the culmination of 4 months of blood, sweat, and tears result in a game with 6-6 UTEP.
