Post the box score from your first MLB game

August 5, 1990 San Diego Padres at Cincinnati Reds Play by Play and Box Score - Baseball-Reference.com

Reds vs. Padres - Aug. 5, 1990.

I was nine years old at the time and knew the Reds were good but didn't have an inkling of what was going to happen at the end of that season.

The things I remember vividly from that game:

  • Riverfront Stadium was huge - or at least it seemed that way to me. I walk into MLB parks now, and they're all so small. I've gotten bigger, yes. The playing fields have indeed become smaller as well. I also remember though - the actual edifice itself was BIG. New ballparks now - they try to put you right on top of the action, and I wonder sometimes if young kids going to their first game feel the same sense of awe at the vastness of it all. I know a lot of people don't miss that stadium, but I do.
  • Hal Morris hit a HR off the fair/foul pole. I thought that was the coolest thing in the world at the time, and I must admit that every time I see that happen to this day, I think back to that first game.
  • I sat in the green seats in CF. My mom took me to the game and I asked her to get tickets there so I could sit close to where Eric Davis played.
Some things I didn't remember or realize until now:

  • I remember watching for Tony Gwynn, but I didn't realize until now just how many notable players were on the field that day for San Diego. That team also had Jack Clark, Fred Lynn, Roberto Alomar & Joe Carter.
  • That team is perhaps remembered most for the Nasty Boys, but I didn't get to see a single one of them that day. Jose Rijo pitched a complete game.
  • San Diego had some guy named Rich Rodriguez pitching in relief

I don't remember the exact date, maybe someone can help me out, but the first game I saw was at Riverfront in '86. I was only three. The only memory I recall from that day is Johnny Bench getting inducted into the Reds Hall of Fame. Still have a picture of my dad and me by the railing in the Green Seats over looking the field. He worked for the Dayton Daily News and we got tickets for next to nothing. There was something magical about walking through the concourse as a kid and then reaching your section and walking through and seeing the field appear below you. I agree, ballparks seemed so much bigger when we were kids.

I know I was at games before this one, but this is the first I can really remember.

August 3, 1989 Houston Astros at Cincinnati Reds Box Score and Play by Play - Baseball-Reference.com

  • It was hotter than hell
  • Reds scored 14 runs.....in the first inning....and still only had one out.
  • Both Mariano Duncan and Luis Quinones had chances to get on base a third time in the first inning and failed
From the box score....

  • Astro's starter, Jim Clancy faced 7 batters and they all reached base safely
  • Bob Forsch pitched 7 innings in relief, giving up 18 hits and 10 runs
  • Reds went 14-26 with RISP

July 22, 1983 Minnesota Twins at Cleveland Indians Box Score and Play by Play - Baseball-Reference.com

July 22nd, 1983

I was 8 years old and my Dad surprised me. Said we were going out to do something and had no clue what. Had no clue til we got to old Muni. Little did I know but he brought my glove and handed it to me in the parking lot.

A family friend also came with his kids and we sat behind home plate. I don't remember much about the game itself but just the date (I have the program somewhere still), that we won, and how BIG ol Muni was as that was my first time ever at any game. I also remember being disappointed that we were behind the plate (ie behind the metal screen) and thus could not have a chance to use my mitt I held throughout the whole game anyway at the off chance a ball would make it through the screen.

First one I can remember, I'll have to check with my dad to verify this as my first MLB game. I would have just turned 6 at the time. I grew up at Bush Stadium here in Indianapolis (Indians, AAA), though, as my dad worked for the team for quite a few years.

May 28, 1995 Chicago White Sox at Detroit Tigers Box Score and Play by Play - Baseball-Reference.com

-I remember road tripping up to Detroit and how shitty the area seemed .
-The game itself was memorable because there were 12 combined home runs! Balls were just flying out of that place like it was a Little League field.
-Those short fences were awesome. The whole stadium was classic and I'm glad I got to see it before Comerica moved in. My dad also took me to Riverfront (a couple times) and Milwaukee's County Stadium (Brewers vs. Indians) before they were torn down.*
-I remember Cecil Fielder (2 HRs) and Frank Thomas (1 HR) playing.

-Looking back, I didn't remember/recognize: Kirk Gibson, John Kruk (), Tim Raines, Rob Dibble, Ozzie Guillen, Ray Durham, Robin Ventura, Travis Fryman (future Indian), and David Wells all played in the game. Some pretty big names, but like I said, I was 6. :(

*This made me assume that my dad had taken me to Municipal Stadium as well, and looking back I'm pretty positive I did. I remember going to a game and seeing football lines on the field and questioning my dad about everything (the lines, where the dugouts went during football, etc.). However, I'd have no clue of the date at the moment.

I didn't live in a baseball town until I moved to Ohio in 1995 (even then it was 3 hours away). But we went to spring training games in Peoria and Mesa, AZ when I lived there to see the Colorado Rockies. But here is my first Regular Season MLB game:

August 17, 1997 Toronto Blue Jays at Cleveland Indians Box Score and Play by Play - Baseball-Reference.com

I got to see Jaret Wright face off against Roger Clemens. It was a treat!

The legends (or at least big-time stars) of the game:
Roger Clemens
Manny Ramirez
Joe Carter
Carlos Delgado
Matt Williams
David Justice
Shawn Green (younger, pre-Dodgers contract)
Jim Thome
Omar Vizquel
Brian Giles
Marquis Grissom (in-between the Lofton years)
Sandy Alomar Jr.

Crazy! There was so much star power on the field then, many were in, or about to begin their prime careers!! A few were at the tail end too. But that was highly enjoyable. I got to see the game with my Dad, sister and grandpa. I was so stoked! Jacob's Field was all I could hope for and every one was excited as we were in the pennant race.

I have no idea when my first MLB game was since that would've been sometime in the late 70s. I was too young then to have memories of those games today. Although I can recall a time going to a game where I got to bring along a neighborhood friend of mine, and I wore my super-sweet mesh Pac-Man hat, so that would probably have been either '81 or '82.

I did find this among my dad's collection of game programs after he passed away. I remember going to this game with him. I took a photo of the concession prices out of the back.

For all you Reds fans, you'll note that back then, hot dogs were always a $1! A 12 oz beer was $1.75, and you could buy a cigar for a quarter.

this is what limits me.

Houston is better than 6 hours from here. Plus the Astros suck.
Next closest would be Atlanta at a lil over 8 hours, and Arlington is around 9 hours.

I'm not a fan of any of those teams, so I haven't gone to any of those cities specifically to see a game. I was in Dallas for a week at a mechanic school, so I figured I'd take in a game while I was there.

I've been to several big league cities though.
Passed through Atlanta multiple times (never during the season)
Houston a few times. Dallas. Denver before they had a team. Tampa before they had a team.

We have a minor league (AAA) team in New Orleans, so I try to make a few games a year there. Taking my sons to the game Tuesday afternoon.

I actually really enjoy minor league baseball. They are super cheap tickets and food prices, and its a great experience. The ball-players are scrappy and fighting for a major league call-up and the stadiums are nice and close to the field. I do love my San Diego Padres of course, but they are far away now. I think as of now, the Salt Lake Bees are the closest team for me, I think they are a AA team. But I'm not sure, I should go to a game soon, but they are still 2 hours away.

Salt Lake is a AAA (Pacific Coast League) affiliate of the Angels. You'd also have the Orem Owlz right down the road, who are the Advanced Rookie (Pioneer League) affiliate of the Angels. Orem has won the Pioneer League championship four of the past six seasons.

... the only reason I even know about the Owlz is because my stepson's fall-ball select team last year was the Owlz (the County league gets everything through Majestic). I thought the hats were bad ass and wound up ordering one for myself to wear to his games.
